Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 17-24, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - February 21: Seaside - San Luis Obispo, 135 mi / 217 kmRollin survives epic ride for epic win
Astana team manages miserable day with no helpMark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in San Luis Obispo The two years of nearly perfect weather for the Tour of California built up quite a balance in the karma bank, and the cycling gods cashed out everything for today's fourth stage, unleashing relentless rain, whipping wind and nearly freezing temperatures for seven long hours on wet and technical roads. Despite the horrid conditions, Dominque Rollin (Toyota-United) was able to come out smiling with a solo win out of a 200km breakaway, holding off American George Hincapie (High Road) and Spaniard Iker Camaño (Saunier Duval-Scott) by little more than thirty seconds. "To be able to ride away with 20km to go is the best win ever!" said Rollin. "Today the goal was to get me in the break and we knew that with crappy weather we could do something but I never expected to get away with 20km to go. I could see the other guys were getting tired and tired and I felt good. I took the opportunity and just went for it. I just held on and managed to stay away from guys like Hincapie -- it is just amazing!" Being a Quebecor, Rollin is used to racing in less-than-ideal conditions, including his last win on the second stage of the 2005 Tour de Beauce in Quebec. "The last time I won a stage, I rode in such crappy condition and I won there too," he said. "Back in that race there were 70km an hour winds and the other guys were getting blown off the road! Generally the worse the conditions, the better my results." "The conditions were terrible, it was a head-wind all day -- it was cold, wet and really strong winds," said Hincapie, who along with Camaño tried in vein to pull Rollin back. "My hands and feet were ok but my core was so cold, super cold. I know its not that cold outside but I think the wind just went right through me!" Just for the sake of comparison, the same stage in the previous two years took just five hours to complete. Hincapie commented that a domestic rider like Rollin has extra motivation to win in a race like this and that he is impressed to see some of the domestic teams racing. "This is the biggest race in the U.S. and these guys here have every thing in the world to prove," he said. "I remember when I was young and went into races like this, I did everything I could because it’s the one shot you’ve got to make it to the next level. I think these guys are doing an great job." Back in the peloton, the Astana team earned their cut of any potential winnings by race leader Levi Leipheimer, leading him and the peloton through a massive headwind all the way down to San Luis Obispo. "My guys put in a hard day's work," Leipheimer said. "After the day today they can definitely be called the hard men of the race!" "We had this coming to us in the Tour of California -- we had two years of beautiful weather and then three years of bad weather all in one day. That was probably one of the top three worst days I have every had on the bike!" As for the tactics on the day, Leipheimer told Cyclingnews that the idea was not to catch the break to keep it safer on the technical run-in to the finish. "We didn't really want to catch them," he said. "CSC tried it in the end but it didn't work." CSC's new American acquisition Jason McCartney said they wanted to set things up for sprinter Juan Jose Haedo, but that cooler heads must have prevailed. "The plan was to set it up for JJ but I guess we didn't want to take chances in the rain," he told Cyclingnews. The Astana team kept the break to little more than three minutes, ensuring Leipheimer's 4:47 GC advantage over the break's best-paced rider Camaño was never a threat. Leipheimer's American teammate Chris Horner summed it up nicely, telling Cyclingnews, "F**king miserable parade! Our job was that." As for the race leader, the overall picture stayed the same -- with a lot of potential GC threats still hot on his heels heading into tomorrow's time trial in Solvang. "I've got the world's best time trialist right behind me, the winner of Paris-Roubaix, so I've got my work cut out for me." While riding in such miserable conditions is not the best preparation for clocking a fast time in tomorrow's time trial, Leipheimer can take solace in the fact that everyone else had to ride in the same mess. "In these kind of conditions you have to think that everyone feels the same. What can you ask for after seven hours in freezing cold rain? But I did my best to take care of myself and I'll do my best tomorrow." When asked what he thinks of racing in Belgian-style spring classics over here in his home state of California, usually known for its mild winters, Leipheimer laughed and said, "I don't even do those races, but I had to do one today!" How it unfoldedLike last year's start to this stage in Seaside, the skies were cloudy and a light rain fell. But unlike last year, the rain not only continued for almost the entire day, but increased at times to near deluge. Rain capes, hats, gloves and just about anything else in the rider's bags were on their bodies. The weather forecast was so bad, along with a bout of stomach bugs going through the peloton, that multiple riders did not even take the start. Three Gerolsteiner riders, including the points jersey leader Heinrich Haussler, abandoned the tour at the start. The team lost two more riders out of course due to sickness, leaving the team with only three riders. Other casualties on the day included sprinter Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United), Tom Danielson (Slipstream-Chipotle) and former KOM leader Jackson Stewart (BMC). Out on course, the riders rolled along for 15 kilometres with only small attacks attempted - and quickly dismissed by the Astana-led peloton. Saunier Duval-Scott's overall hopes were put on the back burner yesterday as their GC rider Iker Camaño failed to make the selection. In an attempt to salvage something from the race, Camaño helped initiate the main break of the day with Rollin, which also included another rider out of the GC picture, Highroad's George Hincapie. Things were not going Hincapie's way early in the tour with a nasty crash. "I hit my head and almost got a concussion and headache and I don't have skin on the left side of my body," he said. Additionally, his team is suffering the same sickness as the rest of the peloton, but all that is still not discouraging him. Being down on the GC enables him to get away in breaks like today. "Three guys are sick with a stomach virus, but the guys are still motivated and I haven't had this much fun on a bike in a while," he said. "To have the chance to race and be aggressive and go in breaks, today away for almost 200km. This is fun and we are going to keep trying." Also present in the break were: Bauke Mollema (Rabobank), Bryce Mead (Jelly Belly), Danilo Wyss and Jackson Stewart (BMC Racing Team), Edward King (Bissell), Jonathan Hivert (Credit Agricole), Julien Belgy (Bouygues Telecom) and Roman Kilun (Health Net-Maxxis). Jackson Stewart continued a strong tour for the BMC team, leading over the first KOM. But the matches he has burned so far this week eventually caught up to him, and Stewart was unable to finish the stage. However, by taking the maximum KOM points he protected the lead of his team-mate wearing the KOM jersey on the road, Scott Nydam. For the next five-plus hours, the break maintained a steady pace as Astana assumed its rightful position on the front of the peloton. Jumping ahead 150 km, the break still had around two minutes, but a few riders were shed from both the break and the peloton. King, Kilun, Rollin, Wyss, Mollema, Hincapie and Camaño were the riders left in the break. Coming up the incline out of Morrow Bay the group was still working but signs of variance in strength were beginning to show. For a kilometre the riders starting looking around at each other and beginning to notice who was not pulling through. The disorganization only lasted a minute but it foreshadowed what was to come. When the break re-ogranized and began trading pulls, Rollin was at the back. When he came through, nobody followed him and he just kept going. Once he realized what was happening, Rollin, a former Canadian time trial and road race champion, put his hands in the drops and did not look back. He quickly built a 10 second lead before anyone behind reacted. The roll-away shattered the break with only Hincapie and Camaño following. On the open roads the strong Rollin showed his strength by putting 20 more seconds into Hincapie and Camaño, and increasing his lead over the peloton to 3'30. Turning off Highway One into Cuesta College Rollin kept himself upright through the tight turns and onto the back roads into San Luis Obispo. The chase was on as the kilometres clicked off and the roads began to twistsand turns into the downtown finish. Kilometres and seconds were calculated and it wasn't until three kilometre to go until the crowd realized that Rollin was going to hold off Camaño and Hincapie, who were now 20 seconds behind. Rollin savored the moment after the final off-camber turn to the uphill finish, sacrificing a few seconds to the chasers and peloton. Leipheimer's group arrived 2'28 behind the winner, with all of the leader's jerseys safe. Tomorrow's race-determining time trial in Solvang begins at noon PST.
