Entering today's time trial, the discussion about who would emerge on top of the overall was mixed. World champion Fabian Cancellara (CSC) had put time into race leader Levi Leipheimer (Astana) in the opening prologue, and Slipstream-Chipotle had three good time trialists within striking distance. But at the end of the day it was Leipheimer putting all doubts to rest, smoking the rest of the field by nearly half a minute and extending is overall lead.

"All I can say is that I was very inspired here this year just like I was inspired here last year," said Leipheimer. "To be the defending champion and to have the yellow jersey means a lot to me. We really have a reason to fight here with my team Astana." Leipheimer said that this time trial ranks near the top, with only last year's final time trial in the Tour de France beating it. "I think this was my best time trial next to the Tour de France. I was thinking about that the whole time. He's one of the best bike racers in the world and the defending champion and the fans wan tot see him race and we are going to go there and give it to them."

In regards to the actual ride, Leipheimer said he was in tunnel vision with comments from director sportif Viatcheslav Ekimov faintly in the background. "I got a lot of great information, but the sign of a good time-trialer is that you don't remember a lot when you're done. It's a blur and I told myself to go to that place where I can hurt the most."

"Eki was great, he knows exactly what is going through my mind and what it takes to motivate me. He said 'you are so close - Millar's flying with the best split time! He told me I was 3rd best split time. With every passing kilometre I was yelling at myself but not to crash on the last corner because I was a little cross eyed!"

A very strong second place ride by British champion David Millar (Slipstream) catapulted him into second place on the overall, 49 seconds behind Leipheimer. Millar was followed by a surprising time trial from teammate Christian Vande Velde, who moved into third overall, 1:08 behind.

"Jonathan [Vaughters] brought us here last year to check out the course so it was not much of a surprise to me in terms of what to expect," said Millar. "I made a bit of a mistake in the prologue by going out too easy and I told myself I wouldn't do the same thing here. I think I might have scared Jonathan a little bit - I went out pretty hard and hung on!"

"I was surprised, for myself, I expected Fabian to win today," said Vande Velde who is a former teammate of Cancellara. "I put a little bit more pressure on myself, I did well two years ago and last years ago and I want to de even better this time. Those are all goals I had in my head, not exactly voiced before the race."

"The course was very dynamic with a lot of left and rights and ups and downs and some tail winds where you could sort of ease off and recover," said Millar. "Because of the dynamic course there were moments where you could go hard or easy, its all relative but I thought it was a beautiful course."

Former race leader and prologue winner Fabian Cancellara kept his ride today in perspective, with the other riders focusing on winning here while he looks ahead to the spring classics. "I am the world champion but without good condition to beat the other ones it is hard," he said. "Levi and Millar, the whole team Slipstream, are all in good condition because this is one of the main goals for them.

"For a small guy to go fast like this, he shows every year now that he is fast in this race," Cancellara continued. "For him and [others] the Tour of California is the biggest race. For me the Tour de Suisse is maybe the same. He is good here and he has a rest after, but for me it is not the end - I still have to work hard to be serious for the next race. I have Flanders and Roubaix on my head."

"My condition is not super - I did a really good performance on the San Jose stage and yesterday with seven hours on the bike it was not easy for everybody. I was also taking on a new role on the team because I was in a good position, me and Larsson, and normally I am not expected to do this - normally it is [Larsson,] but that is cycling. But to be in this condition here is good. I'll take a good rest like the other day and be ready for tomorrow."

Leipheimer said that while Cancellara did not have his best day, he was impressed with his performance on the third stage into San Jose. "We are not machines and Fabian made an amazing performance the other day proving he could climb. He has a lot of heart and a lot of fans but we are not machines. Obviously today is not a normal day for Fabian, he's better than that and I think I got lucky."

Cancellara said that while Levi showed he is the strongest in the race today, he thinks that Slipstream is still a threat. "With two days more, it is not finished. I am sure Slipstream will do something - they want to win. I think they have more riders to have a leader. They showed on the San Jose stage that they are really strong, and were really strong today and they are good. They have to play their cards. When they don't then they are not better than Levi, but when you play really good cards and make good tactics, maybe in the end they will find a way."

"Who knows what tomorrow its going to bring," said Vande Velde. "It's not just going to be us, it's going to be a combination of everybody and its most likely going to be guns blazing like it has been every year. It's a very hard start on small roads with some really nasty climbs. I'm sure Astana will be tired, I don't know how they couldn't be tired, everyone is. They did get a rest day today so batteries are recharged a bit."

One of the pleasant surprises today was Bissell's Tom Zirbel, who finished as the top domestic rider in eighth, 1:24 behind Leipheimer. Zirbel bested his time trial teammate Ben Jacques-Maynes by one second, giving that team two top-ten results on the day. "It was pretty windy today," said Zirbel. "I'm happy with my time trial today and that I had the lead for a little while. Its my first time trial this year other than the prologue and I felt pretty good. I think it is a good indication that I will have more good time trials this year."

Tomorrow's penultimate stage will be a tough test for Leipheimer and Astana, with four KOM climbs and three intermediate sprints before three tough finishing circuits in Santa Clarita. There are time bonuses on all the sprints and the finish, which could help close the distance to Leipheimer before the final stage, which has a tough climb up Millcreek Summit.

Cyclingnews will continue its live coverage of every stage, beginning tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. PST.
