Cavendish wins stage one of the Tour of Ireland

Bouncing back from the disappointment he experienced in the Beijing Olympics, Mark Cavendish underlined his status as cycling's fastest sprinter when he won a 60 man bunch gallop on the opening day of the Tour of Ireland.
The Team Columbia rider hit the front inside the final 500 metres and easily held off Julian Dean (Garmin Chipotle), Alexander Kristoff (Joker Bianchi), Boy Van Poppel (Rabobank Continental) and the rest of the peloton. This earned him the first yellow jersey of the race and his fourteenth victory of the season.
Cavendish, who won four stages in this year's Tour de France, was very happy with the result. He was helped greatly by his Columbia team, firstly in controlling the gains of the breakaway and then also in helping him back to the bunch after he got dropped on the lumpy run-in to the finish.
"I was very pleased with the team performance today," he said after the finish. "My form is not so good after just travelling back from Beijing, so it just shows how you need such a strong team behind you. You saw how well they worked today, like always. I think we have shown all year how strong we are as a team, and to come to Ireland and do that is perfect. To come away with the yellow jersey after the first stage is even better.
"You can never get tired of winning. And the feeling is obviously a bit sweeter when you are tired, too."

The 192 kilometre stage was marked by a four-man breakaway move which began around Laragh, 37 kilometres after the official start near Dundrum. Travis Meyer (SouthAustralia.com), David George (MTN South Africa) and Irish rider Martyn Irvine (Pezula) built a fifteen second advantage and were joined soon after by Matt Wilson (Team Type 1).
The quartet worked well together and by the time Irvine won the hot spot sprint in Rathdrum (km 48.7), they were seven minutes 20 seconds clear. This went up to the maximum lead of seven minutes 43 seconds 70 kilometres into the stage.
Irvine was clearly suffering on the hills and finally lost contact on the run up to the day's category one climb of Mount Leinster, where Wilson beat George for the prime and started the run of points-gathering which would see him end the day in the King of the Mountains jersey.
The latter looked strong but was himself dropped at the uphill An Post hot spot sprint in Borris (134.8km after the start), leaving just Wilson and Meyer up front. The duo rode strongly together but were eventually hauled back inside the final ten kilometres, ensuring a big bunch sprint and Cavendish's 14th victory of the season.

Wilson was disappointed to be caught, but realised it was going to be difficult with such a small group. "I was really hoping that a few more guys would come along with us and we would have a better chance of staying away and setting up a bit of a GC [general classification]," he stated. "But there was only four of us out there and unfortunately we lost two of them about halfway through, so there was just me and the other Aussie guy left out front. He was really strong and we gave it a good shot.
"I didn't get many reports saying exactly who was chasing, but I knew that Garmin and Columbia would be back there going hard."
Wilson took maximum points on three of the day's five climbs, including the category one Mount Leinster, and had the consolation of ending the day in the King of the Mountains jersey. "When you are out there you are really only thinking about the stage win and staying away, but it is good to come away with something. I have got a pretty strong team here so I am sure they will help me try to defend it."

Kristoff was third on the stage but in finishing first in the Roundwood An Post hotspot sprint, he had enough of a buffer to end the day one point clear of Cavendish in the points classification. "It is what I was hoping for afterwards," he said. "Now I have got the jersey and I will try to protect it, but I think it will be hard. He is really fast."
As regards Irish interests, Belgian Benny de Schrooder of the Irish-registered An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly team was sixth, while Ciarán Power was best of the home riders in 19th place.
Compatriots Dan Martin (Garmin Chipotle H30), Stephen Gallagher and Mark Cassidy (both An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) and Roger Aiken (Irish national team) also finished in the main bunch after what was an unexpectedly tough opening stage.
Thanks to the time bonuses, Cavendish ended the day four seconds ahead of Kristoff and a further one up on Dean. He said that he will attempt to defend the lead for as long as is possible. "I will try my best. Like I said, my form is not too good now. Maybe when the terrain gets tougher it might get harder for me to defend it, but I will give it my best shot and my team will give it their best shot.
"Even if I don't come away with the yellow jersey, I am pretty confident that one of my team-mates can do it anyway. We will see how it goes."
The 2.1-ranked international race continues tomorrow with an undulating 158 kilometre stage from Thurles to Loughrea.

- A casual pace saw the peloton still together as the race passed over the third category Lower Sugar Loaf climb after 16 kilometres.
- A break has gone clear as the race passes through the second sprint bonus of the day in Rathdrum with Martyn Irvine (Team Pezula Racing) taking the points from David George (MTN Energade) and Travis Meyer (SouthAustralia.com/AIS).
- The peloton passed through over six minutes behind and seemed content to let the leading trio stay away.
- Having lost contact with the leading group Martyn Irvine (Pezula Racing Team) had a lonely ascent of the first category Mount Leinster.
- Team Columbia set a steady pace as the peloton approach the summit some three minutes later.
- Local Hero: Ciaran Power’s number one fan. The Pezula rider received every encouragement from the Waterford crowd.
