U.S. National Criterium Championships - NEDowners Grove, Illinois, USA, August 16-17, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Race Details Previous Race Next Race Race 4 - August 17: USCF Men's National Criterium Championship,Hanson upgrades wins with crit titleBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Downers Grove, Illinois Ken Hanson (California Giant Berry Farms) won the Saturday pro-am warm-up event last year racing as a professional, which usually means no result for the Sunday race. Hanson returned to Downers Grove this year as an amateur and traded last year's result for a win on Sunday, giving him the stars and stripes for the next year. "Last year I won the pro-am in a breakaway and in the rain, and I prefer that... cold, technical courses," he said. "The heat is not my best weather for racing. But my team-mates Patrick Briggs and Steve Reaney were just phenomenal on the last two laps." Hanson said the team strategy was to first try to get into the breaks, but failing that be patient and wait for the right time to make their move, and they played both of these to perfection. The first part was Andy Jacques-Maynes in a long break with Adam Bergman (Texas Roadhouse, both former professionals. "Andy Jacques-Maynes did a great job staying out there and putting everyone on the defensive while we just kicked back and followed wheels." But the break ended up fizzling when Bergman realized he would not be able to beat the stronger Jacques-Maynes. "It was a nice move but we came here to try to win and I knew right away that Andy was way stronger than me. He was mad that I wasn't pulling through after a while and he should be. But we were racing for first and I couldn't figure out a way to beat him. I had to play the team card." With the field all together again it would be down to a field sprint and this is when the patience strategy paid dividends. "We didn't want to take the front too early," said Hanson. "We have a lot of speed but not a lot of depth." Seemingly on cue from previous years the Bianchi/Grand Performance team took to the front in the closing laps too early, looking impressive but posing no real threat. This was followed by a more significant but expected move my the well-manned Texas Roadhouse team for the final laps. "We wanted to make sure not to get caught out on the front early, take our time and get to the other side of the figure-eight before we went. Steven Reaney took me from there to the last corner and made it easy for me to pick my own line." It made it easy for him to find the finish line too.
