Sivtsov rides into yellow, Slipstream misses opportunityBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor atop Brasstown Bald, with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins
"There was no way to use tactics today because this mountain is very steep," Sivtsov told Cyclingnews. "It was all about who is fit, strong and able to win. I followed Levi's accelerations, and then I found one opportunity to attack in a place I could accelerate. Levi was the favourite here and I waited behind him and Trent who were doing a lot of work. "My team told me last night that his was the perfect stage for me and that a stage win would be so good for me and for us," he said. "George [Hincapie] told me what to expect from the climb, where it was steep and where it was more gradual. So he instructed me to wait and give one very strong attack in the right moment and it was perfect. My team was a beautiful team that did some beautiful work today!" The time gaps were so small at the finish - ten and sixteen seconds for Lowe and Leipheimer - that it took some time for the officials to announce that Lowe had lost the lead. "If that's the case than he deserves it because he is a really strong guy," Lowe said. "High Road has used a lot of energy all week and for him to have the legs to do what he did today. He deserves it; he's a strong bloke." "It sucks, but what are you going to do?" Slipstream's director sportif Jonathan Vaughters told Cyclingnews after his team lost the leader's jersey. "I told him he had to watch Sivtsov as well. But close counts in horseshoes..." "I guess we were a little more focused on Slipstream and Trent," Leipheimer said. "I had [Sivtsov] in my mind but you never know with a young guy." High Road's team owner Bob Stapleton had told Cyclingnews at the team time trial that Sivtsov was a GC rider for the team, so it was no surprise to him that he came through. "We brought him here with the hopes that he could put on a good show here and be competitive for the overall, and he came through big time," he said. "We are super proud of him. He is a fine young man from Belarus and we discovered him late last season when he rode for Barloworld, when he was a U23 world time trial champion." As last year's stage winner here, Leipheimer knew where and when to attack to shed the most riders. But everyone else knew he was the one to watch, and so Leipheimer had to set the pace most of the final 3km. "I had given it a big effort before and when he went it was clear, he was the strongest of the three of us. I kinda waited to see what Trent was going to do I'm surprised he didn't mark him a little more because it was his race to lose. But he rode really well, too." "I think our team rode the perfect race," Bruyneel said about the set-up for Leipheimer. "We always had someone in the break. Slipstream was forced to work, and that worked well for us. At the end it was man-against-man, and we have no excuses. Trent defended and he was super strong. You never know on these things and Sivtsov is a great rider. He was the world champion in U23 and had a few difficult years after, but he is a good climber. He deserved to win, he was the strongest." "We tried everything we could, and I don't think Levi really had the legs today," Bruyneel said. "He did all the pulling though but he didn't have the acceleration. We knew he had to drop Trent and he couldn't." Astana did indeed play a textbook race today, putting a man in every break, including the main break of the day with Andrey Mizurov who followed orders and served as the caboose of the seven-rider break. Following the catch in the final kilometers before the start of the final climb, riders such as Chris Horner, Antonio Colom and Chechu Rubiera put in strong efforts for their team. "I pulled into the right hand corner and did the last 1.5km at 100 percent," Horner said. "We had a bunch of guys all ready with Chechu and Andre already up the road. Antonia was with Levi doing the hit after me to soften everyone up. But sometimes it just goes that way. That's why you play the game!" In the general classification, Lowe now sits four second behind Sivtsov, while Leipheimer is fourteen seconds. Tomorrow's final circuit race around downtown Atlanta has three intermediate sprints with time bonuses (3, 2 and 1 seconds) and on the finish line, 10, 6 and 4 seconds are up for grabs, for a total potential of thirteen seconds. Leipheimer and Lowe are technically still in the hunt. However, High Road's captain George Hincapie will have sprinters such as Greg Henderson, currently wearing the sprint jersey, and André Greipel will be there to cover any last-ditch efforts by Slipstream. And at just 64kg, Lowe is not known as a power sprinter. "Trent Lowe is not much of a sprinter, but never say never," Hincapie said to Cyclingnews after the stage. In the other classifications, Jason McCartney (CSC) rode an impressive race, winning both KOMs and taking home the final KOM jersey. An impressive domestic showing came from Health Net-Maxxis' Rory Sutherland, who finished fourth on the day. Also impressive was Team Type 1, who put four riders in the top 20, led by Mexican Moises Aldape. This put them into third place on the team GC, the top-placed domestic team, behind Astana and CSC. Cyclingnews will have live coverage of the final stage starting at 1:00 p.m. EDT. How it unfoldedThe Tour de Georgia kept its streak of good weather this week with sunny skies and warm (but not too hot) temperatures. This was important today as the infamous ascent of Brasstown Bald Mountain lay off in the distance. At the start all of the potential general classification contenders were called up to the line, with Slipstream-Chipotle-H30 ready to defend the race lead of Trent Lowe. But first there would be two KOM warm-ups with Hogpen Gap and Unicoi Gap, a category one and two climb respectively. Unlike all of the previous stages, the peloton let a break get up the road relatively early. This was likely because Astana was in every break of the day, ensuring it would only be Slipstream with the responsibility to do the chasing. The main break of the day started as seven riders, with Jason McCartney (Team CSC), Ivan Stevic (Toyota - United), Andrey Mizurov (Astana), Craig Lewis (Team High Road), Stephan Schreck (Gerolsteiner), Neil Shirley (Jittery Joe's) and Svein Tuft (Symmetrics). WIth a much different Tour de Georgia parcours this year, including a team time trial in place of an individual one. This meant that McCartney was virtual leader on the road, though with a lot of kilometres, and climbing remaining. Approaching the first KOM Slipstream had done a good job of keeping the break well within reach at just more than four minutes, and dropping. As the best climber in the break it was McCartney leading up the climb, and Mizurov tacked on the back with the best spectating seat of the race. Up to the climb the group worked well together, with all riders rotating rather well. But on the climb the differences showed. Over the top it was McCartney taking maximum points, on his way to claim the race's KOM jersey for the day and the race. Only three other riders managed to keep contact with the Coralville, Iowa resident, Tuft, Shirley and Mizurov. Back in the peloton, the Slipstream train had shed all but 51 riders - but all the main contenders were still there. On the way to the second KOM, six riders had escaped the Slipstream grasp: José Luis Rubiera Vigil (Astana), Bradley McGee (Team CSC), Craig Lewis (Team High Road), Thomas Lövkvist (Team High Road), Stephan Schreck (Gerolsteiner), and Santiago Botero Echeverry (Rock Racing). With the lines of McGee and Rubiera up the road, it was all hands on deck for Slipstream. "When Chechu went across to the break I was closed off so we didn't have anyone to cover, so we had to chase pretty hard," said Tom Danielson. "Those guys were really moving! Astana got us pretty good - we had to bury ourselves with me, Pate, Zabriskie... that was a lot of pulling!" The four leaders had two minutes on the chasers and four minutes of the remaining field, but that continued to come down as the kilometres to Brasstown Bald shrunk. Over the second KOM McCartney led again and secured his KOM jersey lead for the race. However it took seemingly forever for the chasers to close the gap to the leaders, with the gap holding around 30 seconds for quite a while. Finally Mizurov sat-up and waited for his team-mate and then drove the chasers up to the break. At this point it was less than 20km from the finish and the field was less than two minutes behind, so Neil Shirley decided it was now or never. His solo attack quickly put 22 seconds on the tiring break riders, with McCartney burned from pulling up the climbs all day. While Shirley rode well last year in Greenville to earn him a podium spot at the USPRO road championship, this move was more to secure the most aggressive rider award of the day - and it (surely) worked. Up the long, unrated drag to the road leading to Brasstown Bald, the field made it's catch. Chechu and McGee sprung free and passed Shirley to try another escape, but it was short lived. The yellow jersey group, with Leipheimer, Chris Horner, Antonio Colom and a few others made the turn onto the climb. Rubiera joined the group and put in a little dig, followed by Horner. This softened up the other riders and shed a few others. But Lowe stuck to Leipheimer's wheel like there was a bottle of Cooper's Sparkling Ale dangling from the saddle. But behind Lowe sat Kanstantin Sivtsov, waiting in the wings for his moment, unbeknownst to seemingly everyone else in the race. The three ended up alone half-way up the climb, but with Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) and Rory Sutherland (HealthNet-Maxxis) making some waves close behind. Sevilla was less of a surprise than Sutherland who earned the top finish for domestic teams with an impressive fourth. [Let's hope the amazing ride did not take too much out of his diary-writing abilities! - Ed] Up the road it was Leipheimer trying to put in a dig on the steep section just inside the final kilometre. He drove it hard up the pitch but Lowe and Sivtsov were there with him. When Leipheimer sat down Sivtsov made his move, and the usual spot on the final kilometre - the super-steep 180 degree switchback at 500 metres. From there it was all Sivtsov with Lowe and Leipheimer unsure what to do. Finally Lowe reacted, passing Leipheimer but it was too little, too late. Sivtsov crossed the line 10 seconds ahead of Lowe and sixteen seconds ahead of Leipheimer.
