High Road closes out Georgia with stage win

Sivtsov claims final yellow, Henderson adds second stage

The final stage of the Tour de Georgia was once again a circuit race around downtown Atlanta, again starting and finishing at Centennial Olympic Park. Unlike last year, rain clouds added an additional factor to the stage, with many punctured wheels and nervous riding. However, half-way through the course dried and the action ensued, with High Road's sprinter Greg Henderson capping off a tremendous tour for the team with his second stage win, adding to the overall win by team-mate Kanstantsin Sivtsov.

"It was chaos as you can imagine," Henderson said about the final sprint, a two kilometer drag from the final turn with a nasty little uphill for the final 250 meters. "My team did an exceptional job – we lead the peloton for almost one hundred kilometers and then they did a great job getting up there in the end."

The win secured his overall win in the points competition, something he has not won here since 2005.

Henderson came around last year's stage winner Juan Jose Haedo (CSC) who had a lead-out from team-mate Bradley McGee. This came after a suicide attack from another CSC rider, Bobby Julich, and Astana's Antonio Colom, which softened up the other teams.

"Bobby attacked with four kilometers to go and Bradley gave me a good lead-out," said Haedo. "But it was an uphill finish so I didn't know how long to wait. It was different today, last year I was coming from behind and you can use more advantage. This year I was second at 300 meters and started sprinting. It was a good sprint and nothing to complain about – Hendy was good today and he won."

Back in the peloton the rest of High Road was making sure the yellow jersey was safely guarded into the finish. After the race, Sivtsov told Cyclingnews that because of yesterday's hard stage he could only focus on keeping his jersey safe. "Yesterday was a difficult day and after a hard day like that today was really about concentrating on keeping the jersey intact. I had George helping me do this and so it is not my victory, it is a victory for High Road."

"In the beginning of the week I did not think I would win this race overall," he said. "What I did know was that I was needed in the first few stages to help Greipel and Henderson in their sprints. After those stages were finished, the team felt that the hills were a good place for me and the teamwork has been great all week."

Earlier in the race a fourteen rider breakaway escaped, much to High Road's liking, as it only gained up to a minute and took all of the time bonuses away from second place on the overall Trent Lowe (Slipstream-Chipotle-H30) and third place Levi Leipheimer (Astana). Both of the riders were in striking distance of overall leader Sivtsov, but after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory yesterday, Lowe and Slipstream seemed content with second and the best young rider jersey.

"After a stage win, the rest is gravy," Slipstream's director sportif Jonathan Vaughters said about the team time trial win before today's stage.

In the break were a few familiar faces, including Symmetrics' Cameron Evans, wearing the Canadian road champion jersey. Evans had ridden in the long break on stage five into Dahlonega. "We went up the road pretty early. At first everyone was working but then a couple of guys decided to sit on a bit. So no one was really committed to rolling it. Before the end there it looked like it could go either way, and then guys started attacking it so I sat on. It was fair enough, it was Aaron Olson and he was sitting on because Richard England could win the sprint."

Though Evans' efforts did not net him the most aggressive for the week, the team did come up with an impressive third place on the day from sprinter Andrew Pinfold. "Considering the racing that we have done... or haven't done, I'm surprised with my fitness right now," Pinfold said. "To be honest Symmetrics really needs these results and Cameron Evans was incredible out front today. We are getting desperate because our team will end at the end soon due to lack of funding if we can't find another sponsor."

The most aggressive for the week went to Health Net-Maxxis' Rory Sutherland. The Cyclingnews diarist turned a lot of heads yesterday on Brasstown Bald, finishing fourth. "I wouldn't go as far as to say that I was the most aggressive," he said. "But my team did work very hard this week and so to have the jersey is a little bit of an extra bonus. Our team is capable to be here and then it's a matter of stretching your brains and see what you can do with it. On Brasstown Bald I just rode my own tempo the whole way up and I don't think I ever really went above threshold."

Taking home the KOM jersey for the week, for the third time in tour history, was Jason McCartney (CSC). A self-proclaimed non-climber, McCartney does well on the climbs every year at this race. His solo win in 2004 on the climbing Dalton to Dahlonega stage is what launched him into the ProTour. "It's nice with no expectations and then to come out with the jersey and a stage win for JJ is good!"

When pressed for his secret to securing the KOM jersey here in 2004, 2006 and now 2008, McCartney laughed and said it is because of his native Iowa in the American Midwest. "It's the up-and-down nature of Iowa where we really don't have climbs – but it is like that and windy all the time, so it's my terrain. Everyone is like, 'Oh these hills hurt!' and I'm just getting going! Yesterday when it was really aggressive in the beginning I was up there feeling good."

McCartney said he is excited about the upcoming month of May when he will race the Giro d'Italia. "I don't feel as good as I had felt other years here, so maybe I'll be really good for the Giro!"

But one of the biggest players of the day was the course, which was slightly altered from last year's course due to construction. After leaving the nice downtown with an enthusiastic crowd the race traveled through what the city referred to as revitalized areas, but also some areas that clearly had yet to be revitalized. This is much different from the circuit race courses used in previous races, such as the 1996 Olympics, and the spectator count was sparse.

"It was a bit nerve-wracking at the start with the dampness and a lot of manhole covers – a lot of deep manhole covers!" said Richard England (Bissell). "It was a little bit sketchy so I tried to stay at the back to save myself and stay out of trouble – but it ended up being pretty tough there so I moved forward at the end. Aaron was up the road which was good for us, and the rest of the guys looked after me. But with two punctures in the first 30km took a bit of sting out of my legs and the legs of the team. We were really undermanned at the finish."

The course took its toll on a lot of riders, including the break – which dropped from 14 to 9 just by mechanicals alone. Mavic Neutral Support's Mark Niemiec told Cyclingnews that his crew performed 18 assists and gave out 37 wheels. But what really made trouble for the race caravan was the technical nature of the course. "It took a while for the team cars to make it around all of the technical turns up to their rider," he said.

Stage two winner Haedo, who is riding with a healing broken hand, said the roughness of the course hindered him today. "It was really bumpy today on the back side of the course. It was dangerous for me because when I hit a bump I cannot grab the handlebars."

Even though Tour of California winner Levi Leipheimer had to settle for third place, his team did claim the team classification win.
