High Road does the triple-double today

High Road's Greg Henderson has been slowly tweaking his form here in Georgia, finishing fifth the first day and nearly taking the win yesterday. But he must have been inspired by his team-mate's win at La Flèche Wallonne earlier today, because he gave High Road the triple-double - two stage wins, one-two stage finish with team-mate André Greipel and two jerseys in the race as Henderson's time bonus earned him the sprint and overall leads.

"Greipel woke me up today and said, 'Today you strong!'" said Henderson. "The three of us [with George Hincapie] were together in the last corner and it was a drag between Greipel and me to the line."

High Road was the most organized coming into the final turns of a technical and fast final circuit. "I knew that we were going to go fast behind so I stayed cool and hit out with a one kilometre to go and took him to 500 metres," said Hincapie. From there is was flat until 300 metres to go when the road pitched downwards, putting the final sprint in the saddle and at warp speed.

"The sprint was deceiving because it actually ended at the top of the hill," said Henderson. "Even though we were going down hill, I couldn't press any harder on the pedals and it's hard for people to pace you on a downhill. I think that our speeds in the finish were about 70 km/h by the time we got to the line. So the race was really to the top of the hill."

A former world champion on the track, Henderson said he used those skills on the fast finish. "I think my track [racing] helped me today because we were so full of lactic acid with 200 metres to go that I think my sprint was down in the seat," he said. "Coming from the track all my sprints are done in the seat."

The win earned him both the sprint and overall jerseys as former race leader Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) was not in good form on the day. "I told the guys go for Dominique [Rollin] and [Ivan]Stevic because I am not ready for this," Dominguez told Cyclingnews. "I was not expecting [the circuit,] when I checked the profile in book it looks kinda flat, but it isn't at all. Coming onto the circuit it was up and down - good if you have the legs. If I was riding good I would be there, but Henderson was good."

While some enjoyed the difficulty of the final circuits, separating the strong from the weak, others were critical of the tight and narrow turns. "I didn't think it was that bad," said Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis), who put in a solo attack with two laps to go that earned him the most aggressive rider award. "It was hard but it's nice not to have a really quick circuit to the finish. It shows who the really good sprinters are - the ones that can hang in there and do the really good racing. I like that kind of finish."

"It was very dangerous - there is no point in having a course like that," said Dominguez. "There were too many tight turns, and I don't know why they did that."

Slipstream-Chipotle's sprinter Tyler Farrar is also having a fast week, finishing third today, keeping him in the hunt for the sprint jersey in second place and leading the best young rider category. "That circuit was crazy - really hard," he said. "I was caught back but then I made a move at 500 metres just to get up to the front. High Road rode it perfect, they had it dialed in."

"I didn't know the circuit, we just saw on the map all the corners and we knew we had to be up front," said Greipel. "It looked really hard to get to the front but we decided to be at the front coming into the circuits so we didn't have to try to do that while we were already on them. I led out the last part of the sprint and I did see Henderson coming up beside me."

While Henderson had no illusions about keeping the leader's jersey into the mountains on Friday and Saturday, he was happy to be able to finally close the deal for the team here. "It worked out really well for us today to win the stage and also have the yellow jersey," he said. "High Road did such a great job, they really looked after me at the finish and I was just really happy that I could finish it off for the team."

The win gives High Road the final spot in tomorrow's team time trial, with Astana just ahead of them. Riders have mixed thoughts about this particular team time trial, with the split generally down ProTour/domestic lines. "We'll see what this team trial is like," said Levi Leipheimer (Astana). "It's out of tradition in that it's not on team time trial equipment and it's really short. I don't know what to expect."

How it unfolded

Riders started the day in Washington, Georgia for the first time in the six years of the race. From the gun the racing was fast, with the terrain much like first two stages - flat and straight. Tempo speeds were routinely at 50 km/h, keeping any chance of a breakaway from forming. It seemed as if the teams wanted to keep the race together until at least the first intermediate sprint, 77km into the stage.

But about 80km into the race, on one of the only significant descents of the race so far - a downhill down to a crossing of the Broad River - disaster struck. The tightly packed group crossed the river and seam in the bridge deck caught Corey Colliers' (Health Net-Maxxis) wheel, sending him, Timmy Duggan (Slipstream-Chipotle-H3O) and Ben Day (Toyota-Untied) over their handlebars. Both Day and Collier were able to rejoin the race, despite Collier's destroyed bicycle. However Duggan was in far worse shape, with team director Chann McRae saying that Duggan was convulsing by the time the car reached the incident.

Duggan was immediately transported to Athens Regional Hospital by one of the two race ambulances, which sped past the peloton 10km later. He was most recently listed under stable condition with a broken collarbone and scapula.

"My max speed was 82 km/h somewhere in the race because there were a lot of fast sections on the race today," said Henderson about the descents.

The incident happened just as four riders had 10 seconds on the peloton, climbing up from the river. As soon as the seriousness of the crash was realized, the bosses of the peloton, such as Leipheimer and Hincapie, rode to the front to slow the pace down. This allowed the break to gain four minutes in a matter of kilometres.

Scott Zwizanski (Bissell), Frank Pipp (Health Net p/b Maxxis), Moises Aldape Chavez (Team Type 1) and Rhys Pollock (Trek-Marco Polo) rode up to nearly a five-minute lead. However as the race neared Gainesville the road began to pitch up and down. Back in the field the Toyota-United team rode tempo keeping the lead in check.

"It was a good composition in the beginning, but then guys started to get tired," said Moises Aldape (Team Type 1). "The Bissell guy missed a pull and started to get dropped. I was taking second in the sprints hoping I would make it to the finish and make it in a good position, but when it was under two minutes I started to miss pulls knowing that the peloton was going hard."

At this point High Road and Team CSC jumped on the front and put the pedal to the floor, cutting the lead to under two minutes in no time.

Near the city limits the break dwindled to two, with Pipp leading Pollock. Then it was just Pipp as the peloton swarmed up a hill to end the break.

Up ahead, two laps of a four kilometre circuit awaited the race. However, this was no ordinary course - with steep hills, off-camber turns and a downhill finish sprint. With less than two to go Sutherland jumped out of the fast-moving field and held a 12 second lead. But no other rider went with him right away, and he was left to dangle.

After a valiant effort, Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) joined and passed Sutherland. "It was a very hard finish and I wanted to make sure I made it as hard as possible to help my team-mates in the end," said Sevilla. "I wanted to go with Rory when he went but he is too explosive and too fast for me and I would have wasted a lot of energy - so I decided not to actually cover that one. I felt like if I couldn't win from one of my own attacks then at least I my effort would help to set up the finish for my team."

"Having him out there made it better for me," said Rodriguez, who finished fifth. "I wasn't feeling 100 percent so having them out there was working better for me and if anything they could get into the right move and win the race. It's the kind of course where if I was having a good day, it would have been good for me."

After catching Sevilla, High Road put the big guns on the front, with Hincapie the biggest - leading it out from one kilometre, up a tough hill to the final turn at 500 metres. From there ProTour leader Greipel took over and actually gapped Henderson. But the New Zealander made it back by the time the pair reached 300 metres and the road went down, down...down.
