Rewi takes controversial win

Timaru's Reon Park (Colour Plus) has retained a 22 second lead over defending champion Hayden Roulston (Trek Zookeepers) after stage three of the Tour of Southland today. Park and Roulston were content to sit in the main peloton during the 165 kilometre stage - the tour's longest from Invercargill through Eastern Southland to the finish in Gore.
How it unfolded
A breakaway of seven riders was allowed to roam free with the biggest threat coming from Bissell Pro Cycling lead rider Jeremy Vennell who started the day more than nine minutes down on Park. The stage finish went to Christchurch's Glen Rewi (Creation Signs), who narrowly headed under 23 rider Alex Meenhorst (Ascot Park Hotel), with Vennell having to settle for third.
Rewi's jubilation at winning was shortlived. He had agreed with Vennell not to sprint for the finish, but admitted later that he had been overwhelmed by the sight of the line and had decided to go for victory instead.

Vennell gave the Cantabrian a stern lecture in race etiquette after the race
finish. "We had an agreement," Vennell said. "He was suffering on the hill climbs
and we let him sit in there as long as he didn't contest the finish. He's the
one who brought the guys across to me when I attacked in the last two kilometres
and he won the stage so I wasn't very happy with him at all. I appreciate a
man who keeps his word,
but he didn't so I wasn't very happy with him at all."
Vennell's effort lifted him from 24th to 12th, still 5min 24sec behind Park. Subway's Jeremy Yates, another pre-race favourite, is nearly 20mins down in 59th place and there was more bad news for Subway when Hayden Godfrey had to pull out of the race today.
The biggest threat to Park's position undoubtedly lies with Roulston. While Park has three team-mates in the top six placings, Roulston and his Trek Zookeepers team-mate Gordon McCauley are in second and fourth place respectively.

The weather was an improvement on the hail and rain of the opening two stages, but another six riders withdrew during today's stage. Ten percent of the starters have now withdrawn in the opening two days (13 riders), including Gen-i/Savings and Loan's Australian rider Stephen Robb who was injured during a crash which involved at least a dozen riders early in the stage.
Tomorrow's racing features two shorter stages, from Invercargill down the exposed southern coastline through Riverton to Tuatapere in the morning (101km), then from Tuatapere across the plains of Western Southland to Winton (88km).
