Ryan wins as Roulston takes the lead

Marc Ryan (Colour Plus) claimed victory in a small bunch finish on this morning's 104.2 kilometre stage from Invercargill - Tuatapere. Defending Tour of Southland champion Hayden Roulston (Trek Zookeepers Café) also finished in the leading bunch, giving the New Zealander the leader's jersey.
Ryan's (Colour Plus) morning stage victory was a mixed blessing for the Colour Plus team, which saw its previously strong position on the PowerNet-sponsored Tour take a major battering.
Ascot Park Hotel's Clinton Avery, the tour's leading Under 23 rider, finished second in the 101km stage, with Australia's Charles Howlett (Sycamore Print) third and Roulston fourth. The stage featured the bulk of the peloton concentrating on survival after two tough opening days on tour.
There were at least two crashes on the morning's stage, one involving Placemakers rider Jonathon Coates from Rotorua who hit a truck parked on the side of the road and suffered a suspected fractured arm, while another crash near the stage finish saw at least three riders go down.
After fragmenting and coming back together a number of times, the first major move came at the 63 km mark when four riders including Omar Kem (Bissell Pro Cycling), Subway's Joshua England, Sycamore Print's Howlett and Hilo Decorating rider Brian Jenson forged out to a lead which head grown to well over a minute by the time the stage reached Colac Bay.
Another attack off the front of the main bunch was led by Roulston and McCauley and Colour Plus failed to react, basically gifting the leader's jersey to Roulston, who had started the stage only 22 seconds behind Park.
