Gardeyn surprises sprinters with early jump to win in Buggehout
Belgians occupy top three in GC

Unibet.com racer Gorik Gardeyn surprised sprinters today with an unanticipated, but successful early jump towards the finish near the finale of stage 2 in Buggehout. Meanwhile, Greg Van Avermaet (Predictor - Lotto) took over the lead from yesterday's winner and leader going into today's stage, Wouter Weylandt (Quickstep - Innergetic).
By mid-way through the race, five men established a long-term break including Belgians Iljo Keisse (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen), Nico Sijmens (Landbouwkrediet - Tönissteiner), Steven De Neef (Davitamon - Win for Life - Jong Vlaanderen) and Jarno Van Mingeroet (Jartazi Promo Fashion) along with Dutchman Matthé Pronk (Unibet.com). They earned five minutes on the group which included Weylandt in the leader's jersey.
A large group of 16 riders pursuing the leaders joined them with 55km to go. The new group of 21 riders included riders like Van Avermaet, Maarten Tjallingii (Skil - Shimano), and Nick Nuyens (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone), Jelle Vanendert (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen), Nikolas Maes (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen), and Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team), and Bram Tankink (Ned) Quickstep - Innergetic.
Quick Step realized the danger of the break with Van Avermaet then in the virtual lead and they worked to drive the chase toward the end. With 20km to go, the leaders had a 20 second gap. With 15km to go, the lead group was in sight. Maes tried a solo attack to get ahead of the lead group, but his attempt was unsuccessful. A regrouping occurred at 9km to go, and a mass sprint seemed almost inevitable, but Van Avermaet gave it another shot with two riders attempting to follow him, but they were unable to stay away.

Rabobank took over leading the pack toward the finish. A few riders attacked in the final five kilometers trying to avoid a mass sprint. No one could get away. Then Discovery Channel started their set up for their man Davis.
But it is Gardeyn who decided the end of the race. The Unibet rider jumped off the front in the last turn, surprising the sprinters and going strong until the line to take the win.
Allan Davis (Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team) and Tyler Farrar (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone) rounded out the top three. Van Avermaet took over the lead ahead of Weylandt (Quickstep - Innergetic) and Gardeyn. He goes into stage 3 with a five second leader's advantage on both of his fellow Belgians.
