Tour of Belgium - 2.1Belgium, May 30-June 3, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - May 30: Oostende - Oostende , 182 kmWeylandt winds up Quickstep workQuickstep excels in work against the windBy Brecht Decaluwé in Oostende The vast plains near the Belgian coast are often windy and these conditions are the playground for the local Quickstep formation. The Belgian team took the initiative in the peloton and the echelon work once again proved to be their cup of tea. Few big names were surprised except for Nick Nuyens who lost about a minute after a final surge from Quickstep near Oostende. After 182 km there were only thirty three riders left in front even though nobody had succesfully attacked the peloton all day long. Quickstep tried to bring sprinter Gert Steegmans into position, but it was his team-mate Wouter Weylandt who turned up first on the finish line. "Today's stage was ideal for me," said winner Weylandt. "That I could finish it is not only nice for me but for the whole team. I think nobody in the group knew who our leader was, actually it wasn't our goal that I would sprint as we were working for Steegmans. But one kilometre before the finish I noticed that Steegmans wasn't on my wheel anymore. That's why I seized my opportunity. I started the sprint with all I had and could keep it up till the finish," Weylandt explained. It was the young glamour boy's third victory of the season after a stage win in the Driedaagse West-Vlaanderen and the Ronde van het Groene Hart, unsurprisingly all sprints even though Weylandt is only third in the Quickstep sprinter-hierarchy. "And still I'm winning here, isn't that nice" the winner smiled while he clearly enjoyed the attention. Weylandt isn't considering defending his jersey. "Why would I do that, I can't time trial and I can't climb. The rest of the week we'll try to bring Steegmans in position while we have Rosseler for the GC," Weylandt said. Unibet's sprinter Jeremy Hunt came second, and the margin was enough to say it was a close finish, nevertheless team manager Koen Terryn was clearly dissapointed with the result. "There were a dozen bottles of champagne ready to celebrate a win in my hometown, this is just too bad," the Unibet manager said to Cyclingnews. There are more chances to come, after a small version of Gent-Wevelgem today, there's a mini Tour of Flanders tomorrow, but that shouldn't be too hard for the guys that were in front today. How it unfoldedAt the start in the coastal city of Oostende, 135 riders strolled away with the sun shining brightly on their backs. The weather forecast offered the riders a sunny though windy start, but some showers were expected during the latter part of the race. Some sunbathing riders were abruptly dropped back into the reality of cycling as the first hour was pretty rough as high speeds - averaging 47.8 km/h - and strong winds were the main executioners early on. The strong winds are typical for this area and the peloton immediately broke into several echelons due to these winds. Last year's winner Maarten Tjallingii was attentive enough to be in the first echelon, just like many others local boys who excel in this tactical and tough work against the wind. The inexperienced riders and the cyclo-cross riders - who are preparing for their winter season - weren't strong enough and suffered at the back. Among the surprised riders were also Jörg Jaksche and Vasil Kiryienka who tried hard to come back. Stijn Devolder, a local of the region, clearly wasn't living up to the standard of his peers, and missed the front group. His team-mates were more attentive, with the Japanese rider Fumiyuki Beppu making the split along with Gianni Meersman and Vladimir Gusev. Meanwhile there was a crash by Mindaugas Striska, who was brought over to the nearby hospital in Torhout with a broken collarbone and shoulder blade. Masahiro Shinagawa crashed as well and bruised his hip. Quickstep's Sébastien Rosseler showed his GC ambitions as he won the first sprint after 100 km ahead of his teammate Gert Steegmans and Greg Van Avermaet, earning a three second bonus. The first peloton of about fifty riders led the rest of the field by more than five minutes after 130 km through the flat countryside of West-Flanders. With 40 km to go Quickstep decided to give a lesson to the peloton on how to set up an echelon. The team unfolded their strength near Middelkerke and immediately blew twenty riders out the back, a surprising face among them was Cofidis' team leader Nick Nuyens. The second sprint after 148 km was another bonus for Rosseler, the Wallonian won ahead of Van Avermaet and Sentjens, gaining six seconds on the day. The first peloton had a minute on the Nuyens peloton with 25 kilometres to go, as the Devolder peloton was riding more than eight minutes behind the leaders. Meanwhile, former sprint ace Tom Steels punctured but he came back in impressive style. Four kilometres later the already exciting race kept moving as there was an attack from Tom Boonen, who is competing in his first race since Paris-Roubaix. When the former world champion was reeled in, an attack from Markus Eichler and Glenn D'Hollander managed to stay away for a while, but Quickstep kept the brave duo at 10 seconds until they turned the screws for the field sprint. With twelve kilometres to go the front duo was brought back by Quickstep with help from Skil-Shimano. The peloton of Nuyens didn't stop working as they were again within a minute of the leaders. Ten kilometres from the finish, the third sprint was won by Geert Omloop ahead of Bram Tankink and Stijn Vandenbergh, and then the gas was on full as Quickstep and Skil led the group of thirty three riders into Oostende, with Boonen pulling turns for his team-mates. The speed was very high as the peloton was stretched out in a long line, everybody had to fight for their spot. Gianni Meersman tried to get away in the final kilometres but the sprint was inevitable. Gert Steegmans pulled the sprint for Wouter Weylandt who clinched the win ahead of Jeremy Hunt and Greg Van Avermaet.
