T-Mobile titan takes breakaway sprint

In today's opening stage, T- Mobile sprinter Ina-Yoko Teutenberg has won the Trust House criterium with a huge sprint over American Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine) and German National Team rider Charlotte Becker.
With a strong northerly wind causing problems for the weaker riders, T-Mobile took control of the racing, keeping a tight reign on potentially dangerous breakaway attempts and finally letting a move go in the closing stages.
Despite the magenta power, Australian Institute of Sport rider Nikki Egyed was active throughout, picking up points in each of the four sprints and will now wear the sprinter's jersey tomorrow.
A five rider crash halfway through the race resulted in German National Team member Nina Khon and Amy-Kelly Horsfall from the Exodus team taken to hospital for checkups. Both riders have been allowed to start tomorrow's 100km stage from Martinborough to Masterton.
How it unfolded
T-Mobile's Oenone Wood was an early protagonist, always near the front of the 60-strong peloton with teammate Teutenberg waiting in the wings. The German never attempted to go for any of the four sprints in the stage but was always an imposing figure at the head of affairs.

With 20 minutes remaining, ten riders escaped from the main bunch and the American team Cheerwine had the numbers in their favour - with three riders to T-Mobile's two. As six of the strongest teams were represented up front, the main bunch seemed to take its collective foot off the gas pedal and wait for the final sprint.
The ten strong break contained the following riders: Teutenberg and Judith Arndt (T-Mobile), Susanne Ljungskog and Loes Gunnewijk (Team Flexipoint), Joanne Kiesanowski (Trust House New Zealand), Nikki Egyed (Australian Institute of Sport), Charlotte Becker (German National Team) plus the Cheerwine trio of Laura Van Gilder, Catherine Cheatley and Leigh Hobson.
In just one lap the break had 20 seconds and it was clear the winner would come from one of these ten riders.
Back in the peloton, a reaction came from Olivia Gollan (Australian Institute of Sport) with a bold move to close the gap to the leaders. It was too little too late however as the front ten readied themselves for the final sprint.

Judith Arndt kept the pace high on the final lap with Teutenberg hovering ominously around fifth wheel. Into the final 150 meters, Joanne Kiesanowski lead out but Teutenberg proved too strong, coming from outside and taking her first yellow jersey in New Zealand.
Tomorrow's 100km stage will test the riders with two hill climbs and cross winds in the Wairarapa. All riders however are concentrating on stage four, the 125km stage with a 12km mountain top finish to Admiral Hill where the tour's winner will surely be decided.
A strong line-up of top international riders are competing at this year's Trust House Tour of New Zealand. With riders from Australia, USA, Denmark,
The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland and Sweden plus the best of New Zealand, the tour is looking good for the next four days.
