22nd Tour de Beauce - 2.2Canada, June 12-17, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - June 13: Vallée-Jonction, 170 kmChadwick makes signature move workBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Vallée-Jonction, Québec Walters easily retains GC leadGlen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance) has a kind of signature move - get in a break, ride hard and then attack the break solo and ride even harder. This usually results in getting caught just before, or even at, the finish line. However today in Vallée-Jonction, Chadwick came to the line with a 20 second lead - something he held solo for the final 27 kilometres for a well-earned stage win. "Kobzarenko was going for the KOMs and he said if you feel good have a go when I get the points," said Chadwick. "As soon as he crossed the line I got a gap and I was lucky I could hold on to it. It was a bit of downhill and the guys could have worked more, but for the last 20km it was like hovering right around 20 seconds. I'm glad that last kilometre was relatively easy!" The two Navigators riders did the lion's share of the work in the break today, along with Francois Parisien (Slipstream-Chipotle) and Charles Dionne (Équipe du Quebec). Symmetrics had two riders in the break, Eric Wohlberg and Cameron Evans, though the two played tactics all day and hardly pulled until Chadwick made his move. "Symmetrics were scared of the two Navigators and they didn't want to ride with them to save energy," said Parisien. "That didn't make any sense because that was not going to make a difference at all on the GC. I think they used that as an excuse to save their legs and go for the win. It was the two Navigators, me and Charles Dionne doing the work." But justice was served with Chadwick retaining his advantage to the line, as well as Hector Hugo Rangel (Tecos Trek) and Parisien taking the sprint for second and third. "I don't understand Symmetrics' tactics today," said Chadwick's break teammate Kobzarenko. "They go for the break and then don't do any work. So I took the KOM and then worked for Chadey - I am happy for this guy. The KOM jersey was less important than this victory." Eric Wohlberg defended his team's tactics from the break. "We know the two Navigators guys were so strong - they ripped our legs of yesterday and they ripped our legs of in Philly. We know that as much as we want to ride the move for GC we can't take those two guys up the road that far. I don't like to race that way but that is all there is to it. We are sitting good in GC with Svein and Jacob, and we don't want to jeopardize that. We figure that one day this week we are going to have to do some hard riding ourselves." Navigators director sportif Ed Beamon was not very quiet about his displeasure with the way the Symmetrics riders rode in the break, with some tongue-in-cheek comments for Wholberg and promising more of the same tomorrow with the tough climb to Mont-Megantic. Kodak Gallery had a quiet day today, keeping the break at no more than five minutes all day over tough rolling hills and three KOM climbs. "It was easy for me with my team," said Walters about his day in yellow. "The team covered a few moves and did a lot of work, but I think they'll be fine for tomorrow. I was really impressed with Cody O'Brien today - he's a track rider and he was pulling up and over these steep climbs. Then he went back and got us bottles before the next climb." How it unfoldedThe new parcours for this second stage was an odd one - with a KOM climb starting one kilometer from the start, and with many more difficult climbs on the course unrated. The early climb meant the peloton started like it was a 20 minute criterium with the Tecos-Trek team riding strong for the points. Kodak Gallery was able to keep everything together over the climb and then set-up a tempo while numerous break combinations went and came back. "Straight from the gun on the first hill they went hard until after the first KOM," said Parisien. "Then it was stop-and-go, stop-and-go. All the breaks were not good enough for at least one team." Finally, 40km into the stage, a group of ten got away with the right combination of riders for most of the peloton. But Slipstream was missing and as the peloton flattened out curb-to-curb, the crafty Quebecor Parisien snuck through the closing door to make it into the clear. "The peloton was starting to sit up and was getting wider and wider across the road. I attacked and passed on the side at the last possible minute and just suffered for five minutes." The rest of the day Kodak Gallery rode its tempo, keeping the break from every threatening the GC leaders. As mentioned before, the break worked thanks to the driving force of the two Navigators riders as well as Dionne, Parisien and Rangel. The other two KOM climbs came back to back, 10km apart, and with less than 40km left in the race. Adding to the oddity of the course design, the last KOM did not come at the top of a climb, but about a kilometre before it. However, Chadwick used this to his advantage and launched his attack on hard turn 200 meters after the line, on a small uphill section. He then rode the false flat up to the top of a 14 percent descent, growing his advantage as the break riders looked at each other. "I was the first to respond and then everyone jumped on my wheel," said Parisien. "So there was no point for me to keep going, come back on him and have them attack me and not be able to go with them. I tried to play that card - sometimes it works sometimes not." At this point the Symmetrics riders moved to the front and took turns driving. But Kobzarenko did everything he could to slow the progress, swinging five meters to each side in a sweeping motion behind Evans along the flat final five kilometres. A few efforts by Parisien and Dionne, as well as the Symmetrics riders working cut his 44 second maximum advantage to 20 on the flat final section, but it was enough to make it work for Chadwick. "I came here with maybe GC on my mind, but we had two guys in the break yesterday that are good for GC," said Chadwick. "We came with a strong team so to get a stage is good - for me and the team.
