Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 18-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - February 23: Solvang - Solvang (ITT), 23.5kmLeipheimer puts stamp on California: "It's my turn!"
ProTour puts smack down in time trialBy Mark Zalewski in Solvang, with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins "It was one of my best time trials ever," said Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) about extending his lead in the time trial stage of his home race to an all-but-insurmountable lead of twenty-one seconds on Jens Voigt (Team CSC). Voigt, who rallied to beat Leipheimer at his home Deutschland Tour last year, finished second to Leipheimer in today's 23.5km time trial in the California wine country. "After the finish I jokingly told him that now we are in California so it is my turn," said Leipheimer. "Him winning the Deutschland Tour was fantastic, the fans were out in support for him. I told him we should take our show on the road because we have had some great battles over the last couple of years." "For me the biggest pressure was facing my teammates if I wasn't able to defend this lead," admitted Leipheimer. "They have really suffered in the past five days and I couldn’t think of not keeping the yellow jersey. That made me be able to push harder than normal." Starting in the final position, Leipheimer had all of the time splits in front of him, including his teammates Ivan Basso, George Hincapie and a surprisingly fast finishing Jason McCartney, who was third on the day. "You know it is interesting because I haven’t been riding my bike much," said McCartney about his time since camp, spent at his home in Iowa. "I have just been skiing a lot. We had a real bad cold snap where it was zero degrees and so I haven’t been able to ride my bike since camp. But I ski between 2 and 4 hours. I wasn’t sure how my form was going to be here but I think skiing helped me stay fit." The splits helped Leipheimer stay motivated for the first part of the course, which was relatively flat but extremely cold and windy, with the wind right in the riders' faces from the start. "The first half of the course was either a cross-head or direct headwind. It was hard mentally because the speed wasn't very high. But that is really where the time difference was made. I just tried to stay one with my bike." "I was given a lot of time checks that were set by Ivan Basso and George Hincapie," he continued. "In the beginning I was close but then I started to pull away from those time checks. When I got to the climb I could hear the announcer say I had the best time." However, after that point team director Johan Bruyneel used his experience to keep the motivation going. "With five kilometers to go he said I was five seconds ahead," explained Leipheimer. "I thought he might have been lying to me to get me to go faster. With two kilometres to go he said I was only two seconds ahead! "Those checks definitely pushed me." Levi also had help from a new time trial position, something he 'discovered' a few months ago at the wind tunnel in San Diego. "We were in the wind tunnel and I almost had left, when somebody suggested I try something different," he said. "My hands are defintely up -- I don't think it's as radical as last year's winner -- but that is because of the UCI rules. But for me it works out perfect and it is comfortable. I can't say why but it is fast, and that is what the wind tunnel is for. Right from that moment my motivation has been different. " The truth was that Leipheimer was four seconds faster than Voigt at the halfway split in Los Olivos, right before the twisting, turning climb. "I gave it everything up the climb, stayed in my big chain ring and sprinted over the top," said Leipheimer. "I was a little bit cross-eyed coming down the hill but I pulled it off and I think the big climb and the climb with two kilometres to go I really gave it everything at those points. That is probably where I made my time." Discovery Channel and Team CSC occupied the top nine positions, with Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) leading the domestic riders in tenth. "I was going to go out and see how I was going to do, and I told Glen to honk the horn if I was doing a great time. At that point I was going to go full gas. When I hit the time split, I came in two seconds faster than my teammate Tom Zirbel. He set a really fast time before me and so I was using his time splits to gauge how fast I was going. I started out easy and worked my way into it so when I heard the horn I just laid it down and went full gas." In the best young rider classification, Robert Gesink (T-Mobile) jumped ahead of Matthew Lloyd (Predictor-Lotto), with Thomas Peterson (Slipstream p/b Chipotle) holding onto his third place. No changes came in the KOM or sprint classifications, but those races have yet to be decided. Team CSC extended its lead in the team competition while Discovery Channel jumped many places into second place. Tomorrow is the final point-to-point road stage. While there is a significant amount of climbing, three category four climbs and one category three, Discovery Channel should have no problems controlling things. But the racing is certainly not over. The KOM race should be a battle as it was on stage four, as Christophe Laurent (Credit Agricole) holds a ten point lead on both Jurgen Van De Walle (Quick Step) and Thomas Peterson (Slipstream p/b Chipotle). A maximum of eighteen points is on offer on stage six. In the points race, Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) holds a slim two point lead over Graeme Brown (Rabobank), with the entire top eight separated by two points each down the line -- Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole), Paolo Bettini (Quick Step), Jens Voigt (Team CSC) and Gerald Ciolek (T-Mobile). Two intermediate sprints total ten maximum points and the finish holds fifteen, so there could be some action ahead of the two intermediate sprints on stage six.
