62nd Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 1-23, 2007Main Page Overall standings Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Rest day 2 - September 17: Rest DayCalm before the storm
Between the two rest days, the battle for the overall in the Vuelta a España was mostly quiet, with the sprinters and opportunists battling it out for stage glory but no major shake-ups in the general classification. Cyclingnews' Bjorn Haake looks back on the last week and the race ahead when the GC-contenders will face the final battle in the mountains and the pancake-flat time trial before reaching Madrid. The five stages in between the two rest days contained only one chance for the contenders to put pressure on Rabobank's Denis Menchov in the overall classification, and Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) made the most of it, gaining 41 seconds with a daredevil descent from the Alto de Monachil to win stage 15 and move up from sixth to fifth overall. Aside from that one stage, the intervening stages were a mid-Vuelta siesta for the GC riders, and a prime opportunity for the sprinters and escape artists to have their day. Alessandro Petacchi marked his return to form with back-to-back wins on stages 11 and 12. The only question nagging Petacchi's stellar comeback was what would have happened if Oscar Freire would not have dropped out after nine stages? Certainly, Petacchi's Milram train got its act together, and delivered their star to perfection both days with an arm chair ride behind trusted train conductors of Alberto Ongarato, Marco Velo and Erik Zabel. The Italian sprinter only had to deliver the goods, which he did in style. Stages 13 and 14 went to the breakaways, but were certainly no gifts. Friday's stage from Hellin to Torre-Pacheco was contested under torrential rain and hail which disrupted the peloton's efforts to chase Andreas Klier (T-Mobile), Tom Stamsnijder (Gerolsteiner) and Jérémy Roy (Française des Jeux). Klier attacked his companions to solo to victory, but the real action happened in the peloton, where Caisse d'Epargne tried to split the group and put Menchov into difficulty, but the observant Russian and the rest of his GC rivals safely made the split. Saturday's stage was American Jason McCartney's finest hour as a professional. The Discovery Channel rider and ten others took some lessons from the day before, and with the GC battle temporarily on hold the eleven-strong group stayed clear of the peloton. Banking on his time trial skills, McCartney took off with less than ten kilometres to go, holding on to win by almost half a minute over Thomas Lövkvist (Française Des Jeux) and 50 seconds over the other chasers, led home by Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner). More importantly, the move earned the currently unemployed rider plenty of attention from teams. Sunday's stage finally brought the overall contenders a chance to make a difference. However, it was not only the ascent to the Alto de Monachil that proved to be a battleground, but also the treacherous descent to the stage finish in Granada. In the end it was Spaniard Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) who prevailed in the southern part of his country. He attacked close to the top of the Monachil, then caught Manuel Beltrán (Liquigas) on the descent and won the two-up sprint against his compatriot. Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital) was going well again but he decided that following his crash on stage one, he better get some rest and flew home to Italy from Granada on the morning of the second rest day. His compatriot Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step - Innergetic) still leads the points classification, but his narrow seven-point lead over Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital) is anything but a secure lead. The same can be said for the mountains classification, where Discovery's Jurgen Van Goolen has a three-point margin over race leader Menchov. The latter is likely to pick up more points in the remaining stages in the mountains. Menchov leads in the combination classification, where he is seven points ahead of former jersey oro Vladimir Efimkin. Efimkin is part of an impressive team that is more than a quarter of an hour ahead of Euskaltel-Euskadi in the teams classification. Stage 15 was only a teaser, though, and after two transitional stages there will be some tough roads ahead for the riders before the time trial on Saturday will seal up the overall victory. With the races in the other competitions also still going on full swing, there should be some interesting tactics developing in the next few stages. Stage 11 - September 12: Castellón - Algemesí, 191.3kmAlessandro Petacchi marked a return to the big time with career win number 18 in the Vuelta a España. The Italian, who was hassled over the summer in a doping-related investigation, rode the wheel of Milram team-mate Erik Zabel through the final bends in the finishing town of Algemesí. World Champion Paolo Bettini's charge fell short, as the Italian from Quick.Step was only able to finish second. Zabel kept speeds high to finish third, over André Greipel (T-Mobile) and Carlos Da Cruz (Française Des Jeux). "I needed the win," said the exhausted 33 year-old. "After the Giro, everyone knows the problems I had. I hope these problems are over soon. It's been a long time, since I didn't race the Tour [de France]. At the beginning of this Vuelta, I found myself in bad form. I felt very exhausted in this Vuelta since the very first day. After yesterday's rest day, today I felt a bit better." Stage 12 - September 13: Algemesí - Hellín, 176kmThe rest day has proved to work wonders for Alessandro Petacchi as he has taken the two subsequent stages. The tall Italian from La Spezia, Italy, navigated his way down the finishing straight in Hellín, holding off compatriot Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital) and Byelorussian Alexandre Usov (Ag2r Prévoyance). The Milram sprinter continues to celebrate after a mentally stressful summer, and enjoyed his 19th career stage victory in the Vuelta a España. The bustle of the opening week from the Iberian Peninsula was that Spaniard Oscar Freire was back on the top of his game. The three-time World Champion collected three stage wins before saying 'adios' before stage 10. As Freire left the Vuelta to prepare for the upcoming race for the rainbow jersey in Stuttgart, Petacchi took centre stage. Stage 13 - September 14: Hellin - Torre-Pacheco, 176.4kmExperience beat out youth, as 31 year-old Andreas Klier of T-Mobile responded to the late attack of 22 year-old Tom Stamsnijder (Gerolsteiner) and overpowered him on the finish straight. The two had left their breakaway partner Jérémy Roy (Française Des Jeux) in the dust as the attacks started coming in the final phase of the race. There were no changes in the overall leaders. "That was a very important win for me after a very long time," said Klier, whose last win was Gent-Wevelgem in 2003, "but it doesn't change the fact that this has been a hard year for me. A crash destroyed my chances in the Spring Classics, which are always my biggest goals. But now I have new motivation for 2008." At the end of March Klier collided with a tractor while training, and came away with a broken cheekbone and a severe concussion. Stage 14 - September 15: Puerto Lumbreras - Villacarrillo (Parque Natural Sierra de Cazorla), 207kmDiscovery Channel's Jason McCartney put on an impressive show by launching a solo attack to win the Vuelta a España stage 14. The 34 year-old American was initially part of the 11-man escape group, but blasted free under 10 kilometres remaining as the group's harmony disintegrated. The solo chase by Thomas Lövkvist (Française Des Jeux) proved unsuccessful, as he finished second ahead of the escape remnants, led by Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner). McCartney has gone winless since 2004, but his talents as a strong supporting player are not doubted in the gruppo. However, the rider, who finished third overall in the demanding Tour of California, needed a big win to put him in the spotlight as contract negations are being made for 2008. The Discovery Channel team is ending at the end of this year, and the 2004 Olympic participant is currently looking for a new team. Stage 15 - September 16: Villacarrillo - Granada, 201.4kmSamuel Sánchez of Euskaltel-Euskadi took Vuelta a España stage 15 by the reigns for his second career win in his home tour, in the process, putting important time on his general classification rivals. An attack on the slopes of the Alto de Monachil enabled the 29 year-old to bridge to Manuel Beltrán (Liquigas) on the downhill run into Granada. Beltrán could not match his compatriot's speedy legs in the two-up sprint. Carlos Barredo (Quick.Step - Innergetic) finished third, ahead of Sanchez's team-mate Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi) at 24 seconds. The maillot oro group of Denis Menchov (Rabobank), Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto) and Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne) finished 41 seconds back, while Sánchez moved up one position to fifth ahead of Spaniard Ezequiel Mosquera (Karpin Galicia), who at one point was reported as an abandonment in the day's stage by race officials.
