Le Tour du Grand Montréal - 2.1Canada, May 29-June 1, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 4 - June 1: Mont-Saint-Hilaire circuit, 115kmThorburn wins the 2006 Tour du Grand Montreal by one secondBy Kirsten Robbins in Montreal, Canada It was a very suspenseful final stage of the Tour du Grand Montreal as a break away of seven riders was brought back on the final lap of the race by the Webcor-Platinum and Nurnberger teams. This gave way to a show down between Trixi Worrack and Christine Thorburn for the finishing time bonus. However, T-Mobile's former world champion Judith Arndt ran away with the stage win and the bonuses to match. Trixi Worrack placed second and Sigrid Corneo of Nobili took third place. Arndt won two of the intermediate time bonuses and the finish making her the winner of the point's jersey. The bonuses at the finish along with those Arndt captured throughout the race moved her into third place in the general classification. Nurnberger's Trixi Worrack also accumulated points for placing second in the stage as well as picking up a time bonus during the race. Her bonuses added up to eight seconds but she needed one more second to win the overall. Directeur sportif of Nurnberger Dennis Sanding told Cyclingnews pre race that, "the race is so close in seconds that anything could happen today. There is the opportunity for many outcomes in the race. We needed to focus on the time bonus sprints and the finish because we needed all of the seconds we can to win the overall." Thorburn and Worrack were separated by eight seconds coming into today's stage and there were three intermediate sprints for time bonuses along with the finishing time bonuses awarded. "With the general classification being so close coming into the final stage Team Nurnberger ended up being our allies in a sense," said Thorburn. " They needed Trixi to get the bonuses in order to win the race so they needed to bring back the break as much as we did." Early in the race a break of eight riders broke away over the two-kilometer climb. Elk Haus climber Annette Beutler initiated the break while sewing up her lead for the QOM points. The most threatening riders in the break were TEAm Lipton's Kristin Armstrong, T-Mobile's Kim Baldwin, and Webcor-Platinum's Erinne Willock. The break hovered at forty seconds until the final lap making Armstrong the virtual leader on the road. Team's Webcor-Platinum chased the break with the help of Nurnberger and Team Canada. Once the field was brought back together rider's Katie Mactier of Argon-18 attempted a break. When she was brought back the best Quebec rider Anne Samplonius of Biovail counter attacked. Coming into the finish the field was intact and T-Mobile set up their win. "Going into today we really stuck with our plan," said Thorburn. " We wanted to follow the other general classification riders. We also wanted a break to go up the road to swallow the time bonuses so that we didn't have to worry about Nurnberger taking them. I ended up getting one second in a bonus sprint but I was really just focused on following the other riders." Thorburn's one-second bonus ended up being the decider for the general classification win. "It was a very exciting race this week and it is nice to be the first non-European to win the race," said Thorburn. " I have to emphasize that it was fully a team win. There is no way that I could have won this type of a stage race just by winning the time trial in the beginning. I am even embarrassed to accept the award and the jersey with out my teammates with me Thorburn captured the leaders jersey in stage one of the race. She told Cyclingnews that, "the only time I was worried about losing the jersey was in the Little Italy criterium because we do not have the strongest criterium team here and no sprinters. I think we got a little bit lucky that the weather was bad because that limited the amount of aggression there usually is in a criterium. The break getting off the front there was good for us because those riders absorbed the time bonuses."
