Nurnberger's Australian national champion, Kate Bates won a sprint between her three break away companions in this evening's rain stricken criterium. Kim Anderson of T-Mobile and Chrissy Ruiter of Victory Brewing placed second and third respectively.

"In these conditions it is almost better to be in a breakaway," said Kate Bates. "Actually once it started raining hard our gap on the field grew and then became very consistent."

The women began stage three seeing fifty laps to go on the lap counter. The race was held just before sun down and the fans in Montreal crowded the streets to watch the event.

Early in the race there was a break that included T-Mobile threat Ina Teutenberg, Nurnberger's Trixi Worrack and TEAm Lipton's Kori Seehawfer. The break was brought back by a series of attacks from teams who wanted to bridge to it. There were a series of further attacks launched by T-Mobile keeping the peloton in single file for the first half of the race.

At the halfway point of the race, four riders took advantage of a lull in the action to make their way off of the front. The break was initiated by Victory Brewing rider Chrissy Ruiter and covered by T-Mobile's Kim Anderson, Nurnberger's Kate Bates and Nobili's Elodie Touffet. "I started the break because I thought I had nothing to lose," said Ruiter.

This break proved to be the winning move and the four riders worked well together to maintain their lead on the field all the way to the line. "Our first and for most priority for the team is to go for the leaders jersey," said Bates. "Our secondary goal is to go for a stage win. It is always great for the team morale to win a stage."

Helen Kelly of Elk Haus attempted to bridge to the break with seventeen laps remaining. She remained in between the break and the peloton for several laps before being brought back to the group.

The four riders began looking to each other to take the lead with two laps to go. "I attacked with one and half laps to go because I new Kate Bates would win if it came down to a sprint," said Ruiter. "We all regrouped just before the finish a Touffet attacked. Once we caught her it went straight into the sprint and we were all side by side going for the line."

Kate Bates proved her sprint by winning the drag race to the line. "I am pretty confident in my sprint but I am a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to big bunch finish," said Bates. "I know there are not too many people who can come around me. I am also happy because it is the first time that I have won a UCI race with my Australian national champion jersey."

The general classification remained intact after stage three tonight. Webcor-Platinum's Christine Thornburn remains in the leader's jersey, eight seconds ahead of Nurnberger's Trixi Worrack. Tomorrow will decide the winner of the 2006 Grand Tour du Montreal in the final stage, Mont St. Hilaire's 115-kilometer road race.

Team New Zealand's Karl Moore dominates the race for team glory

The organization of the 2006 Grand Tour du Montreal held a fiercely-contested criterium for the staff of all the professional women's teams before the evening's stage. The directeur sportifs, mechanics and soigneurs lined up in their team attire ranging from full kits and time trail helmets to t-shirts and running shoes. All staff members were to complete a 4-lap battle to the end on the stage-three criterium circuit.

It was the camaraderie between the national team of Canada and New Zealand that helped Karl Moore win the race. "We decided that to beat the other big teams we had to work together," said Moore. "Jacques Landry is a local boy and he worked together with Vincent Jourdain to help me win tonight."

The final lap came down to a small group sprint won by Moore. Justin Morse placed second but was almost nipped on the line by the one fierce female Carmen D'Aluisio of Webcor-Platinum placing third.

"I was gong to wait for the testosterone to settle down in the first two laps," said D'Aluisio. "Then make my winning move." D'Aluisio is the defending champion from 2005.

The field completely shattered from the gun. Staff members were trying to close the gaps before the final lap and resorted to questionable tactics like sling shooting off of their tired competitors.

Directeur sportif of T-Mobile, Bek Andrzej told Cyclingnews pre race that "everything tactically will be illegal in the race this afternoon accept maybe one rule that we must stop for a beer after the completion of every lap."

Team staff registered for the event included Nurnberger, T-Mobile, Victory Brewing, Webcor-Platinum, Nobili, Canadian National Team, New Zealand National Team, TEAm Lipton, and Argon 18-Champion System amongst others.

The various team's staff members spent the majority of the morning plotting the demise of their opponent teams. "I am in good shape for this race with my last hard training ride being in January," said Nurnberger directeur sportif Dennis Sanding while testing his machine before the evening's race.

TEAm Lipton directeur sportif Thomas Liese said jokingly that, "Anje will win today because he is Polish and he knows how to cheat." This may have been an accurate comment as Andrzej was spotted slinging off of Mike Tamayo, directeur of Victory Brewing, to pass him at the line. This action disrupted the race goals of the duo Tamayo and his British partner in crime David Mellar.

In the end all participating staff members were happy with their performances in the criterium. It provided their athletes and the fans in Montreal a comedic opening to the start of the 2006 Tour du Grand Montreal stage three criterium in Little Italy.
