T-Mobile’s former world champion Judith Arndt won the 2006 Montreal World Cup today in a two up sprint with current World Cup leader Nicole Cooke of Univega; TEAm Lipton’s Kristin Armstrong climbed close behind for third place.

The Montreal World Cup is the seventh of a twelve-cup series. Coming into the event Cooke held two hundred and nineteen points, just seventy-four points ahead of Arndt. Arndt’s win today brought her gap down to forty-nine points behind Cooke in the World Cup standings.

Arndt told Cyclingnews that T-Mobile’s strategy was difficult with the loss of two riders to illness, reducing the team to four starters. “We were really lucky today because we can’t cover all of the breaks with such a small team,” said Arndt.

“It was such good teamwork and the staff was so good. The three girls were to go with early moves focusing on teams like Univega and Nurnberger because of Nicole Cooke. Nicole wants to win the overall World Cup series and she was fresh today because she did not race the Tour de L’Aude.

“My strategy was to go with Univega riders Cooke or Doppmann but I thought it will be a bunch sprint at the end like all the other years,” Arndt said.

This round of the world cup started without two of its traditional main attractions as Lyne Bessette recently announced her retirement and and last year's winner Genevieve Jeanson retired last year after being suspended for doping. However, the start line hosted 120 women at the top of Mount Royal at midday, a record number of starters for this world cup.

The fans of the event came in with full force this year and many of them watched the world-class athletes at the new addition of the course – the hairpin turn along Avenue Du Parc at the base of the climb. The additional segment of the event made the circuit ten kilometers long, and riders rode eleven laps instead of the previous twelve.

With three laps remaining in the race the field was reduced to approximately twenty riders. There was a solo break by Nobili's Elodie Touffet that remained off the front until the finishing climb.

“There were maybe twenty girls at the bottom of the climb but I never looked back after that,” said Arndt. “We caught the poor Nobili girl [Elodie Touffet] who was off the front for the last two laps. I felt bad for her because she had a one minute and thirty second gap at one point and was working so hard. We caught her with one kilometer to go.”

During the final climb the remaining group shattered under the pressure of Arndt and Cooke’s battle. “So much happened in the last five hundred meters and I just tried to be on the good wheel. Then with two hundred meters to go I could feel that I had a good chance to win,” said Arndt.

“I was not sure with Nicole Cooke because sometimes she can look so bad during a race and then she will win. She was my favourite today and I thought she was going to win.”

Sweden will host the eighth round of the World Cup, the Open Le Suede Vargarda on July 28th, 2006.
