Vattenfall Cyclassics - ProTGermany, July 30, 2006Main Page Results Live report ProTour standings The Cat pounces in HamburgFreire victorious at Vattenfall CyclassicsBy Tim Maloney, European Editor In what seemed like a deja-vu replay of Milano-Sanremo 2004, Oscar "The Cat" Freire pounced on Erik Zabel and '05 Cyclassics winner Pippo Pozzato like an orange and blue striped Rabobank tiger in the last 15 meters, and with a picture perfect bike throw, won the Vattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg for his 7th win of the season. After his two TDF stage wins, when he also became a new daddy, a delighted Freire rode the outside line and came around on the right to dust the Milram milkman by just 5cm for his 35th career win. "I wasn't sure I won", grinned Freire after the race. "We had to wait for the photofinish. Zabel was strong after the Tour and I knew he would be hard to beat here. It's always good to win, especially a classic." Freire came off Zabel's wheel with 100m. to go and his incredible closing speed and unmatched timing gave the three time World Champion another classics win. "I made my move at the right moment and could win with my bike throw," said Freire. Oldie but goodie Erik Zabel seemed satisfied with his close runner-up spot as he told German TV's Marcel Wüst post-race, "Oscar's done this to me already a few times... This morning, at the sign-in, we joked around saying that as McEwen and Boonen weren't here, if it came down to a sprint I would have good chances. But everybody forgot, as usual, Oscar Freire and he proved in the end that you have to take him into account!" Zabel was asked whether he knew if Oscar had won: "Yeah - we congratulated each other after the line and we all speculated that it was Oscar first, then me, then Pozzato. I'm not disappointed at all, even if some people might not believe me. I can live with losing this way against Oscar. He's known to have that enormous speed towards the line." On the podium for the second consecutive year, 2006 Milano-Sanremo winner Filippo Pozzato rode a strong sprint in Hamburg and just two experienced sprinters, 30 year-old Freire and 36 year-old Ete Zabel could get by the talented 24 year-old Italian. How it unfoldedVattenfall Cyclassics is the first ProTour race since the Tour De France and Berlin based Vattenfall, a major European energy company, is the new title sponsor. First run in 1996 as a national race, today the Vattenfall Cyclassics is raced over 243km in and around the free and hanseatic city of Hamburg, Germany's second largest city and Europe's second largest port. The Vattenfall Cyclassics parcours started with two big loops to the south and the west of the city over 150 km, then two laps of a 42 km circuit in town that climbs the steep 600m wall of the Waseberg (15%) three times. After the final ascent, there are still 16km remaining, back through the famous Reeperbahn before the finish in front of the Rathaus (City Hall) on Mönckerbergstrasse in the very heart of Hamburg. Vattenfall Cyclassics was run on a cool and slightly overcast day with little wind and temps in the upper twenties, and 188 riders from 23 teams started the ProTour race at 11:30. ProTour leader Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) was not on hand as he's still recovering from his broken collarbone from a crash in the Tour De France. After 40km, Corey Sweet (Wiesenhof), Hungarian champion Laszlo Bodrogi (Credit Agricole) and Dario Andriotto (Liquigas-Bianchi) went on the attack. The front trio gained a maximum advantage of 13'20, but when German squads T-Mobile, the Milram milkmen and Gerolsteiner waterboys started to lead the chase, the gap fell to under nine minutes after 125 km. There were just two riders away at that point, as an inexperienced camera moto driver crashed into Andriotto after 100km and the Italian was out of the break and had to abandon. Bodrogi and Sweet kept riding hard and once back in Hamburg, the audacious Aussie led the first time up the brutal Waseberg with 94km to go, but the peloton was chasing hard behind and 20 kilometres later, the gap was down to 4'00. The peloton was breathing down the breakaway riders necks and with 60 km to go, the jig was up for the front duo after over 140km off the front. The counterattacks started behind as the peloton realized that front of the race was now wide open. Wild card invitee Barloworld was quite active, as were Wiesenhof, Astana and Skil. Yakovlev (Astana), Facci (Barloworld) and recent Tour of Qinghai Lake winner Tjallingii (Skil) got away, while T-Mobile's Matze Kessler was leading the chase and the front trio came back with 42km and the final two ascents of the Waseberg still left to race. Attack after attack followed on the Elbechausee towards the Waseberg. Lampre-Fondital was on the front riding hard tempo, but when they peeled off the front, it was big Rabobank rider Gerben Löwik trying to protect his leader Freire. CSC was lurking up front for O'Grady, but Française de Jeux's Walloon wonderboy Philippe Gilbert then went solo with 30km to go. The Belgian had a gap of 0'10 on the chasing peloton as he made the left turn along the Elbe that led to the foot of the Waseberg. Gilbert was going well as he ascended Waseberg and Wegmann was chasing behind. With 25km to go, there were now two riders off the front, Gilbert and Wegmann, with the peloton 0'30 behind, and the chase was having trouble getting organized. With 20km to go, the break had 0'42. By the time the final ascent of Waseberg started, Milram had brought the break back and it was the long, lean figure of Lampre-Fondital's Ale Ballan, with Rebellin's gregario Moletta, Pozzato, Paolini, Mori, Figueras, Celestino and Rebellin up there, but Ballan and Pozzato didn't stay up front as they missed the second move of Rebellin. The break was an all-Italian affair, with Rebellin and Moletta (Gerolsteiner), Mori (Saunier Duval), Figueras (Lampre-Fondital), Paolini (Liquigas-Bianchi) and Celestino (Milram). But CSC, Rabobank and Quick.Step were working hard to bring the move back with 10km to race. With 7.5km to go, it was all back together as Quick.Step had done the deed for 2005 winner Pippo Pozzato. Milram's Marco Velo was riding well as stopper for Zabel, covering every move just as Quick.Step's Tankink was doing for Pozzato. With 5km to go the manoeuvres started among the 40 riders as Quick.Step and Lampre-Fondital were getting their trains organized for Pozzato and Napolitano. Astana's Kashechkin gave it a shot, but as the riders passed under the 1km banner it was Ballan on the front but then Quick.Step's 2006 Tour De France stage winner Tosatto made a strong leadout for Pozzato. The Milano-Sanremo rider sprinted hard with 250m to go, but he made his move too early as first Zabel and then Freire came past. But considering Pozzato isn't a pure sprinter like the other two, it was a nice ride to the podium for the young Italian, who may be going to Liquigas in 2007. Zabel, who won Hamburg five years ago passed Pozzato with 100m to go and was looking good for his second win, but Freire came off his wheel and just got the German at the line his second career classic win.
