Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 15-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - July 21: Xining - Menyuan, 151kmTjallingii sprints to add to GC leadBy Mark Gunter in Gui De Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) extended his lead by a further ten seconds Friday. Tjallingii won stage 7 in a bunch sprint on a day that wasn't ideal for riding. With plenty of rain overnight and light rain as the race started, the riders set out to cover 150.5 km and reach an elevation of 3792m on the way to Menyuan. The race gradually rose in altitude for the first 80km and followed tree lined roads as a group of thirteen riders made a break from the pack. The roads were wet and as yesterday the riders all came home with dirt on their faces. As the leaders reached the foot of the climb the rain was still falling lightly and the temperature was fresh. Darren Lill (South Africa) initiated the break and was followed by Pierre Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom) and Jose Valero (Relax-Gam). Darren Lill (South Africa) then went on his own as they entered the fog about five km from the summit, and was looking good, but possibly waited for recruitments for the forty km descent and the finish line. Ghader Mizbani (Giant Asia) and Jose Valero (Relax-Gam) did catch him by the top. The descent was slippery and the fog had gotten thicker. Bursting through the fog first though was Daniel Lloyd (Giant Asia). He held onto a lead while the chasers re-grouped and with fifteen km to go it look inevitable that he would be caught. And caught he was, setting up one of the tour's more exciting sprints. Yellow jersey wearer Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) took a confident win. Maarten now holds a fifty-two second advantage over Hossein Askari (Giant Asia) with one more hilly stage and a criterium to go.
