John Kenny gives the Masters a lesson in sprinting

Schoolteacher and soon to be father John Kenny (Easts) got his 2006 Heffron campaign off to a great start when he outsprinted Steve Orfanis (Clarence St) to win the 2006 Joseph Sunde Masters event. The Masters event heralded the start of a great day's racing on the Australia Day holiday when over 40 masters riders, young and older, lined up for the 30km criterium.

2005 champion Scott Callum, who came off a strong B grade win in Tuesday night's Trek Series race, was on the start line along with fellow Easts B grade motors John Peppard, Warwick Edwards, Nick Whyman and Karl Bellamy, along with A grade big motor and new to the Masters division, Stewart Campbell. Randwick Botany were well represented as always on their home circuit, along with a big contingent of riders from the Shire, along with all the usual suspects from the St George, Waratahs, Penrith and Sydney clubs.

Unexpectedly hot and still conditions dictated that not even the relentless attacks from Stewart Campbell could break the bunch up and the race unfolded to the much anticipated bunch gallop. The most organised move came from the Easts riders as John Peppard and Warwick Edwards controlled the last lap. Then it was Stewart Campbells turn to create the lead out for sprint ace Kenny. It worked to perfection with Kenny coming off the wheel in a perfectly judged move and was only ever challenged by Steve Orfanis.

Kevin Black (Randwick Botany) finished strongly for third and Stewart Campbell held on for fourth while Scott Callum finished in the prizemoney to take fifth.
