11th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 3-12, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - Tuesday, February 7: Menara TM - Genting Highlands , 99.7kmSerpa again!George tightens race gripBy Anthony Tan in Genting Highlands Dead flat or horrendously hilly, José Serpa can do it all. Today's much anticipated stage to the Genting Highlands produced only a minor reshuffle, but once again, the 26 year-old neo-pro from Selle Italia Diquigiovanni was the major surprise, becoming the first rider to take back-to-back stage wins at the 2006 TM Le Tour de Langkawi. "When I attacked, it was for one thing and one thing only, and that was the victory," stated Serpa, growing in confidence by the day. Attacking a select group of eight riders seven kilometres from the finish, the Colombian left the likes of Credit Agricole climbers Francesco Bellotti, Saul Raisin and Christophe Le Mevel, his team-mates Walter Pedraza and Gabriele Massaglia, and Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance) in his wake, seemingly unperturbed about the events unfolding behind him. By the 1,699 metre-high finish, he had a minute and a half's advantage over the next best riders, Spaniard Jose Miguel Elias Galindo (Relax-Gam) and Massimo Iannetti (LPR), with the maillot jaune of David George another 10 seconds behind. Pacing himself throughout the 17 kilometre ascent, George told Cyclingnews post-race the team's strategy today was one of riding within themselves. "Obviously, we didn't want to try and go out there and win everything, win the stage and blow up in the final kilometres, so we had to ride a little bit defensively," he said. "Now, we've got two minutes on the next riders on the [overall] classification, so it couldn't be better." Conceded Navigators' Grajales, who finished sixth on the stage, a second apart from Bellotti and Pedraza and now lies fifth overall: "I didn't everything I could, but he [George] was just so strong. "The yellow jersey very well prepared - we couldn't drop him, and he was strong enough to keep the jersey. Pedraza, Bellotti and me just stayed together till the end of the stage. I got dropped once, I came back and I attacked again," he smiled ruefully. George admitted that having done the climb of Genting a number of times before allowed him to have the strength when it counted, responding with ease to repeated accelerations from Pedraza, Bellotti and Grajales, the latter his only danger after Massaglia dropped off the lead group around the same time his team-mate Serpa attacked. "We've done it with Selle Italia a few times before on this climb... it was Ryan [Cox] and Rujano last year, and I came second up here to one of the Selle Italia boys a few years ago, so we've had a fair few battles, we know the climb and how hard it is," he said. "It's a brutal climb and if you overextend yourself, you end up losing minutes, so the trick is to try and stay with the contenders but not to try and go after everything." The 29 year-old South African now finds himself 1'57 ahead of Missaglia and almost two and a half minutes clear of Bellotti, Pedraza and Grajales. If anyone is to take the race from George's strong hands, a combined team offensive must be launched before the penultimate day's time trial in Melaka, measuring just sixteen kilometres long. Unlike most neo-pros, Serpa appears to show no fear against his more experienced rivals, and it will be interesting to see if his no-holds-barred riding style continues to produce further success for him. "Although this is my very first professional race, I've got a very, very good team behind me with Gianni Savio and Marco Bellini. I've been learning a lot from them... I hope to learn more and in the future, to always be improving in my career," he said. "Before this, I had very good preparation at the Vuelta Tachira," added Serpa. "I felt very good yesterday, and obviously I felt very good today, so I could really ask for much more. It's a shame I missed the big break on the first day, but with two stage wins and trying for more, things are going well for the teams classification." Speaking of the teams classification, thanks also to Pedraza finishing fifth and Missaglia thirteenth, Selle Italia Diquigiovanni has extended their lead over Credit Agricole by a minute and a half. The day's big mover was South Africa, who slashed their ten-minute deficit at the start to just under four. How it unfoldedAt the stage start in Menara TM, temperatures were sky-high and so were the nerves. Unsurprisingly, the race began in similar fashion to that seen on the opening four days - attacks were on from the get-go, and plenty were coming from the green and white jerseys of Credit Agricole, signaling their intentions for the rest of the day. In the opening 10 kilometres, however, most were half-hearted attempts rather than full-on concerted efforts, with the South African team of maillot jaune David George keeping things in check. An early abandon was Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk), who crashed heavily three days ago in Sitiawan and whose grimace showed he was in no condition to race. The high speed continued to the first sprint at Puchong (km 13), won by Italian Samuele Marzoli (LPR) over sprints leader Steffen Raddochla (Wiesenhof) and his team-mate Robert Retschke. Afterwards, a brief lull gave way to a four-man counter comprised of Andy Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom), Xavier Tondi Volpini (Relax-Gam) and Carl Naibo (AG2R Prevoyance), with Great Britain's Russell Downing bridging across to make five leaders after 20 kilometres covered, their lead hovering at half a minute. Moments later, Landbouwkrediet-Colnago's Gregory Habeaux and Jean Claude Lebeau made the junction for some welcome horsepower, creating the day's EB (TM) - although a rather suicidal one at that, given what lay ahead. Best-placed in the move was the Belgian Habeaux in 23rd place overall, 12'04 behind the yellow jersey at the stage of the day. After 23 kilometres, the septet enjoyed a handy lead of two and a half minutes; by Hulu Klang (km 45.2), scene of the second sprint, it had risen another three-quarters of a minute to 3'14. With 50 kilometres covered and 50 remaining, they maintained their three-minute advantage, but it was apparently all the peloton was willing to concede, as the gap remained at 2 minutes 56 at km 66. Approaching the base of the climb with 25 kilometres to go, it was pretty much all over for the break, whose lead was now 2'19 and falling. Though quite bizarrely, with three riders shed and the four remaining - Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom), Tondi Volpini (Relax-Gam), Habeaux (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Naibo (AG2R Prevoyance) - the quartet extended their advantage, albeit briefly. On the lower slopes of Genting, the groupe maillot jaune had already diminished to no more than twenty riders, comprised of: Ryan Cox, David George, Darren Lill (South Africa), José Serpa, Gabriele Missaglia, Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Yohann Le Boulanger (Bouygues Telecom), Francesco Bellotti, Christophe Le Mevel, Saul Raisin (Credit Agricole), Julio Alberto Perez (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance), Jose Miguel Elias Galindo (Relax-Gam), Robin Sharman (Recyling.Co.Uk), Russell Downing, Edward Clancy (Great Britain), Andreas Dietziker, Massimo Iannetti (LPR) and David McCann (Giant-Asia). The high tempo created a race of attrition until seven kilometres to go when the last of the early break was caught, and one by one, riders fell by the wayside until just eight remained - a notable absentee being Missaglia, second overall at the start of the day. It was at this point that Serpa chose his moment to attack - uncannily, almost at the same point as yesterday - a lack of response immediately distancing himself from George, Pedraza, Bellotti, Raisin, Grajales, Elias Galindo and Iannetti. Yesterday's winner simply went into mountain time trial mode until the finish, taking victory by a minute and a half. Behind him, Pedraza, Bellotti, Grajales took turns to attack the race leader George but the South African was on a good day, meeting the trio's accelerations with apparent ease. With two kilometres remaining and Credit Agricole's American Raisin dropped, the five spread themselves out across the road, nervously eyeing their opposition. Then Spaniard Elias Galindo (Relax-Gam) attacked, gaining fifteen metres over Iannetti (LPR), who countered his move, with the pair gaining enough time to round out the stage podium. The next four placegetters - Bellotti, Pedraza, Grajales and George - were separated by three seconds, and as a consequence, the latter increased his overall lead over Massaglia by almost two minutes.
