11th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 3-12, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Monday, February 6: Tapah - Kuala Selangor , 144.5kmJosé Serpa a new name to watchThe stage all set for a battle royaleBy Anthony Tan in Kuala Selangor For most of the climbers in this year's Le Tour de Langkawi, it was a well-earned rest, but not José Serpa. Joining the move of the day that went after just five kilometres, the Colombian neo-pro for Selle Italia Diquigiovanni showed no fear against his more experienced rivals before audaciously attacking them with seven kilometres to go, holding off Evan Oliphant (Recycling co.uk) and Christophe Riblon (AG2R Prevoyance) for his first professional victory at 26 years old. "This morning, I spoke with [direttori sportivi] Gianni Savio and Marco Bellini and they thought we could possibly do something today. So I took it from there and it resulted in victory," said the confident Serpa to Cyclingnews. Asked why he chose to attack almost 10 kilometres from the finish, the fighting-fit Colombian replied: "Well, I was feeling okay but towards the end, running a little bit on reserves. But then coming into the finale, I felt strong again and that's why I decided to attack. I'm very, very happy that Gianni has given me the chance to race at the highest level, and I will do my utmost to achieve a high level in cycling." None of the eight members of the break posed a threat to the GC contenders, so despite the three-minute gap at the finish in Kuala Selangor, the overall leaderboard didn't change. South African David George is still mellow in yellow; second-placed Gabriele Massaglia (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni) enjoyed a day in the relative quiet of the peloton's couch after suffering from cramps yesterday; and Colombian Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance) sits pretty in third, and is arguably George's biggest threat on tomorrow's stage to Genting. "It was easy for me - it wasn't easy for my team-mates," George said about his uneventful day in the saddle. "They did the dog's work today and they did an amazing job. Ten years ago, we came to this race and we were way out of our depth; today we really showed that South African cycling has come a long way. Hopefully, we've had a day to recover so tomorrow we can figure up front." The 29 year-old from Cape Town added it was up to the others to take the race to the Proteas on the 17 kilometre climb of Genting, and if it's an attacking race, then all the better for them. "Effectively we're in the best position. If it's an attacking race, then better for us - but we don't have to smash the race to pieces [ourselves]. If somebody wants to come and get it, then, well, let him... ," he coaxed. "With Darren [Lill], Ryan [Cox] and myself, we've got the three of the best climbers in the race." Pocket-sized climbing sensation, team-mate and George's strongest ally in the mountains, Darren Lill, certainly has a great future ahead of him at 23 years of age. However, team loyalty will prevail above all else tomorrow - even if it means relinquishing his spotted tunic. "Obviously, the objective is to defend the yellow jersey, so myself and Ryan will be helping Dave a lot on the climb, and if I'm still there at the top, then obviously I'd like to defend the jersey," Lill said. "But like I said, the main thing is to defend the yellow jersey and that's what we came here for." Said George on who his biggest adversaries will be: "We don't need to watch everyone: we've got Massaglia at 40 seconds and the next guy [Grajales] at two and a half minutes. Looking at how it went yesterday, we've got possibly some of the best riders in the race, so again, I don't think we need to be too concerned about it being an attacking race. We've got the job to follow [wheels] and obviously to defend [the lead] we'll have to." How it unfoldedAfter a long downhill transfer from the town of Berincang in the Cameron Highlands, descending the gorgeous green path that took the Tour de Langkawi up to the mountains two years ago, it was time for another day in the saddle, this time beginning in Tapah. A rather uneventful 142.2 kilometres on paper, the southern journey to Kuala Selangor, a stone's throw from the Malaysian capital, was ripe for a breakaway; the circumstances heightened with plenty of pairs of sore legs after yesterday's evil climbing session. Like Sunday, proceedings began at a quick clip, albeit starting ten minutes later than planned. [Not that the later start wasn't welcomed, with the Cyclingnews media car running a little behind schedule this morning, requiring some Sega Rally-like driving by our Irish correspondent Shane Stokes. :)] The teams of Japan and AG2R Prevoyance were prominent at the head of the peloton, and it took just five kilometres for the EB™ (early break) to occur, as José Serpa (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Stef Clement (Bouygues Telecom), Mirko Allegrini (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), Xavier Tondi Volpini (Relax-Gam), Evan Oliphant (Recyling.Co.Uk), Johan Verstrepen (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Christophe Riblon (AG2R Prevoyance), and Kazuhiro Mori (Japan) escaped the peloton's grasp. Passing the day's first sprint in Chendurung Balai (km 18.5), the octet weren't seen duking out for bonus points or seconds: each were more interested in consolidating what they had. Equally represented with a single aim, the strong alliance resulted in a handy lead, steadily moving upwards from 2'15 at km 23 to almost five minutes after 50 kilometres. Reaching double that distance, nothing much had changed apart from another uncontested sprint prime and the advantage of the lead group now at 6 minutes and 2 seconds. With 40 kilometres remaining, if any of the teams back in the peloton wanted a bunch sprint, they would need to start chasing now. Navigators Insurance was one of fourteen teams unrepresented in the break, but seemingly the only one sensing any urgency. A while later, a few more collaborated, and began motioning their troops towards the head of the bunch. By the third and final sprint in Sekincan (km 112.8), the sprinters' teams cut a minute and half out of their advantage. However, after more than 100 kilometres' hard work, the break were nowhere near ready to give in, and at 30 to go, 4 minutes and 44 seconds still separated eight riders from the rest. Under the 15 kilometre to go banner, the front group were pretty much home and hosed, holding onto an almost three-minute lead. And soon afterwards, it became time to engage in a cute little game of cat and mouse... ... but week-old neo-pro José Serpa (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni) became the cat who leapt right out of the bag, surprising seven others with a bold though perfectly-timed move. Four went after him, but the crafty Serpa had long gone, putting his head down and bum up to take victory by 15 seconds over British rider Evan Oliphant (Recycling.co.uk), with Frenchman Christophe Riblon (AG2R Prevoyance) finishing a further two seconds behind. Sprint classification leader Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) brought the bunch home for ninth place, exactly three minutes behind the stage winner.
