Geelong Women's Tour - 2.2Australia, February 21-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Next Stage Stage 1 - January 21: Portarlington time trial, 8kmAustrian Soeder wins opening time trial stage of Geelong TourBy John Michael Flynn at Port Arlington, Australia Thirty one year old Austrian doctor Christiane Soeder (Univega Pro Cycling) scored one of the most significant results of her cycling career this morning, winning the opening time trial stage of the Geelong Women's Tour in Australia. The season opening event, a crucial lead-up to this weekend's UCI Geelong Women's World Cup has brought together the biggest names in women's cycling, with the largest field yet assembled for the event, of 130 riders from 19 teams. Australia's Natalie Bates recorded the fastest time of the earlier riders on the course. The New South Wales Institute of Sport cyclist clocked 11.21.44 for the 8 kilometre journey, a result which was good enough in the end, to claim fifth place. It was Soeder who produced the surprise result for the race against the clock, with Russian Svetlana Bubnenkova (Russian National Team) second and New Zealand's Melissa Holt (Bike NZ) third. The Austrian rocketed home in a time of 11.07.51, 5 seconds faster than her nearest rival Bubnenkova. "It was very nice for me to win here because there are very strong riders here" Soeder told Cyclingnews. "I don't feel very well this morning, but it was better and better during the morning." A former duathlon competitor who turned to cycling in 2003, Soeder has been in Australia for six weeks with her Univega Pro Cycling Team, preparing for the Geelong Tour and the opening round of the UCI World Cup Series. The time trial result, providing a perfect launching pad for a season which will end with the world Championships in her home country. "My performances get better and better," an enthusiastic Soeder confirmed post-stage. "So I am looking forward to the World Cup and the World Championships in Salzburg in my country." Third placed Melissa Holt was also satisfied with her first hit-out for the International racing season and the result could not have come at a more important time. "It's always great to have a good time trial and blow the legs a little bit so you can move forward into the rest of the Tour," Holt admitted after her all-out time trial effort. "You always notice the wind and there was a definite headwind going out and a tailwind coming home but the conditions were pretty perfect really for time trialing." Holt is part of a two team 12 rider New Zealand contingent which has been sent to the Geelong Women's Tour and World Cup as the kiwis build up for the Commonwealth Games. Having already earnt a place in her country's Games team in the time trial, Holt is also hopeful of securing a start in the road race team which is yet to be named. "We're five weeks out from the real big competition for the Commonwealth countries, the form is coming hopefully," Holt enthused.
