Geelong Women's Tour - 2.2Australia, February 21-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 22: Barwon Heads road race, 80kmMayolo-Pic repeats in '06 on stage 3Commonwealth Games hope Gilmore injured in crashBy John Michael Flynn at Barwon Heads US criterium champion Tina Mayolo-Pic has won an action-packed third stage of the Geelong Tour, with Australian Commonwealth Games cyclist Rochelle Gilmore undergoing scans on an injured knee following a nasty crash in the final kilometre of the stage. Pic, one of America's most accomplished riders, beat Nürnberger's Oenone Wood and T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg in a sprint finish, Wood's second placing, along with several sprint bonuses for the day giving her the overall race lead, with tomorrow's hilly 112 Kilometre stage at Lara still to come. Team USA rider Mayolo-Pic thought she had blown the chance to score a repeat win on the stage she won at last year's Geelong Tour. The 39 year from Georgia crashed a few kilometres from home on the final lap, but somehow managed to return to the front of the bunch and contest the sprint. "I thought it was over, I don't know what happened, I just nosedived" Mayolo-Pic told Cyclingnews at stage end. "My team, they did everything; one pulled me back to the pack and another one pulled me through and then the other one's did the lead-out. It was just awesome," she continued. Fortunately the strong American managed to avoid the final crash at the two hundred to go mark and held off two of the biggest name sprinters in the business in Oenone Wood and Ina Teutenberg, to make it back to back wins in the same stage of the Geelong Tour. "This is a really tough sprint for me, it's long and it's pretty dicey out there, and it's hard to judge how far you've got from the finish." For Teutenberg it was another near miss, after yesterday getting edged out by Rochelle Gilmore. "I kind of stayed out of it [the crash] - there were a lot of people in the way," Teutenberg said of the chaotic sprint finish. The team did a pretty good job and pretty much led it out from the front." The finish was indeed marred by a final-kilometre crash, with Gilmore one of 14 riders to hit the deck, immediately seeking assistance from her Safi-Pasta Zara Manhattan team manager Phil Anderson after crossing the finish line - a cloud now hangs over her defence of last year's Geelong World Cup victory and the up-coming Commonwealth Games. "I'm most worried about the bump on my knee that's come up straight away," Gilmore said while icing her injured leg. "The last couple of k's were chaotic for everybody - everyone was taking risks that we shouldn't have; I'd admit that I was taking risks but it takes two to tango." It was a case of the Australian's worst fears being realised; without a lead-out train, Gilmore knew she would be facing an uphill battle against the T-Mobile and Nürnberger sprinters. "We weren't giving up wheels," Gilmore recounted of the crash with 200 metres to go. "I wanted Ina's wheel and she had T-Mobile girls trying to push me off it, trying to keep her wheel clear, it was just really rough out there. I can't tell you it happened so fast." The crash occurred when two riders at the front of the bunch locked handlebars and another cyclist behind them hit the brakes. Several riders received cuts and bruises, but Gilmore and Russian Svetlana Bubnenkova, who was also nursing cuts and bruises along with Natalie Bates, looked to be the worst effected. "Hopefully I haven't chipped a bone but that's what it feels like," a concerned Gilmore admitted after surveying her swollen knee. "I couldn't put pressure on it straight away, it hurt so much - getting to the finish line was really difficult. Hopefully it's just swelling from bruising but it's come up pretty quick so it might be worse." How it unfoldedIn Australia, the sleepy coastal village of Barwon Heads is famous for its role as the 'real-life' set for the television drama Sea Change. The town became a metaphor for self renewal, sparking a social revolution of executives leaving big city careers for the 'easy life'. Today the rat race returned to the pretty coastal town in the shape of a peloton of 130 elite female cyclists competing in a 76 kilometre road race and from the outset there was drama aplenty. Minutes into the stage a snake crossing the road sparked the first incident of the day. The peloton slowed to avoid the slithering creature, resulting in two police motorcycles which were following the race crashing. Two cyclists were also caught up in the incident, but fortunately no one was injured. The first breakaway of the day came from the New Zealand national team, with Michelle Hyland making a move off the front in the opening lap. The windy conditions along the exposed sections of Victoria's surf coast weren't suited to solo attacks and the peloton was clearly the place to be as the race convoy rolled through the sand dune country. With Austria's Christiane Soeder holding onto a slender lead after the opening two stages, the big name teams weren't about to let anyone get away on the flat course. Nürnberger's Oenone Wood managed to pick up important time bonuses with a first, second and third, in the intermediate sprints and by the end of the third stage the two time World Cup Champion had the overall leader's jersey and sprinters jersey back on her shoulders. Wood waits for the hills Tomorrow's final stage takes the peloton on a 112km journey through the Victorian countryside, with the course notable for a tough one kilometre pinch climb on which cyclists have been known in previous years to dismount and walk their bikes to the top. Race leader and sprint leader Oenone Wood is looking forward to the challenge, but the two time World Cup Champion won't be expecting an easy day at the office. "We've got a few seconds up on the other riders so it's going to be a tough day tomorrow," Wood said. "It's pretty nasty that hill, I remember last year I had my team-mate Trixi Worrack and my team mate at the time Judith Arndt working for me and it was hard just to hold their wheel the last sixty kilometres in the crosswinds, so I think it'll be a tough day tomorrow." Arndt, who is now riding with T-Mobile, also managed to avoid today's crash-fest, but knows tomorrow certainly won't be easy, given the form of the Australians and the New Zealanders as they head into the Commonwealth Games. "The Australians are so fit, it's hard to beat them," Arndt told Cyclingnews. "She [Wood] did a good time trial yesterday and Kate Bates as well - she's really strong. I want to help my team-mates, I'm not one who's really fit right now, I want to be supportive." Gilmore, meantime, will wait until the morning before deciding whether to ride the final stage of the Geelong Tour, or alternatively rest up and defend her Geelong World Cup title. Scans late this afternoon cleared Gilmore of any fractures. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by John Veage/Geelong Tour
