Bad weather favours Drapac

While the weather turned nasty, the cycling turned tough on the second day of the Tattersall's Cup Tour of Gippsland. Victorian Drapac Porsche teammates Darren Lapthorne and Dean Windsor enjoyed a day in the saddle, both ending with high honours.
Lapthorne won the toughest stage yet of the tour, a 113.7 km road race from Orbost to Lakes Entrance, while Windsor atoned for going close to winning the leader's jersey the previous day, by this time making sure he did.
Windsor had been playing cat and mouse with fellow General Classification hopefuls Miles Olman and Chris Jongewaard throughout the stage, while also keeping a close eye on overnight leader Will Dickeson. Dickeson however blew up big time in Stage 4, losing 15 minutes and any hope he had at all of holding onto the yellow jumper into Warragul on Sunday. An obviously disappointed Dickeson limped across the finish line at Lakes Entrance, knowing his stay in the lead was all-too brief. Windsor however was ecstatic.
"I was very disappointed not to have been able to wear the leader's top today, so this stage will give me a real boost for the rest of the tour," Windsor said.
Windsor still has plenty of work to do to maintain his ranking, as Jongewaard, the South Australian based mountain biker, Victorian Darren Lapthorne, Queensland pair Miles Olman and Tony Mann and two other surprise packets, Cody Stevenson and Mitchell Docker are also hovering towards the top of the leader board.

The afternoon's road stage included seven hill climbs and everyone of them took their toll on the legs of riders. From first to last of the 90-plus starters, clock watchers were working overtime recording the various splits.
Lapthorne, Brendan Brooks (NSW), David Pell (Vic), Daniel Furmston (Tas) and Simon Pearson (SA) had formed a durable breakaway group about 25 km into the race and only split in the last 30 km. At one stage they had established a lead of almost four minutes, before GC challengers in the peloton increased the tempo. However even with 20 km left to travel, the escapees – although by now down to only three – still led by 1'43.
In the end, Lapthorne had enough in reserve to get up the last hill and win by 9-seconds from local Lakes Entrance rider Daniel McConnell and a further 2-seconds to the pre-tour favourite Robert McLachlan of Canberra.
