A troublesome back injury didn't stop Victorian Commonwealth Games rider Sean Finning from claiming opening stage honours in the 2006 Tattersall's Cup Tour of Gippsland earlier today. Finning (21) won the 25 km criterium held in the small township of Mallacoota in far South Eastern Victoria, holding off several late race challenges.
Finning hurt his back in America recently and wasn't sure how it would react to the week's racing that the five day, nine stage Tour of Gippsland will present. "My back has been a real worry the last coupe of weeks, but it felt good out there, so I might be right over the next few days," Finning said.
Finning broke away from six fellow peloton escapees with three laps of the 30-lap criterium remaining. He opened up a lead of seven seconds but was forced to work hard to hold his chasers, which included Dean Windsor (NSW), Wesley Sulzberger (Tasmania), Chris Jongewaard (SA), Peter Milostic (NSW), Darren Lapthorne (Vic) and Will Dickeson (SA) and that's how they crossed the finish line.
Although he had a winning margin of two seconds, Finning only took the tour's yellow leader jersey courtesy of countback from Windsor, after the latter had impressed in the intermediate sprints.
