Tattersall's Cup Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, August 2-6, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - August 4: Bairnsdale, 33kmsDouble victories put Stevenson in contentionBy Rod Morris in Bairnsdale In-form NSW rider Cody Stevenson maintained his good form in the Tattersall's Cup Tour of Gippsland by winning the fifth and sixth stages to haul himself into overall contention and become a real chance to stand tall as tour winner come Sunday. Stevenson (24) from the Penrith Ramblers Cycling Club in Sydney, started day three of the tour with a 65.5 km "sprint" from Lakes Entrance to Metung and then capping off his dream day in the saddle with victory in the Bairnsdale Criterium. A former mountain biker of some acclaim, Stevenson has moved into second place overall, just 1.08 minutes behind tour leader, Dean Windsor (Vic) with three stages remaining, including a tough closing chapter of 134 km in Warragul on Sunday. Stevenson leapfrogged Chris Jongewaard (SA) and Queenslanders Tony Mann and Miles Olman in yesterday's twin stages, and has given himself a real chance of winning this event. "I was a bit scratchy early in the week, but as the tour has got longer, my legs have felt better and I know I'm a chance now to reel Dean (Windsor) in," Stevenson said. Windsor used a lot of energy in the Bairnsdale stage, chasing down intermediate sprint points, but his day of two minor placings has him looking every inch this year's Tour of Gippsland winner... providing, of course, he can hold out Stevenson. "I was watching Jongewaard, Mann and Olman pretty closely and not really concentrating on Stevenson all that much, but he's a definite threat now," Windsor admitted. "I was really chasing as many of the sprint points as I could get and hoping that general classification would look after itself." Windsor, Stevenson and four others, Wesley Sulzberger (Tasmania), Tim Buchanan (Canberra), Patrick Shaw (Victoria) and Cameron Peterson (NSW) formed a solid breakaway group just before the halfway mark of the Bairnsdale Criterium, and were never headed by the chasing pack, eventually holding a 47 second advantage at the finish over the peloton. Windsor and Sulzberger were involved in a terrific battle for the Mid Valley Shopping Centre Morwell Sprint Championship, with the young Tasmanian emerging with the day three advantage, but by just two points. The pair duelled swords, chasing down the sprint points, which also carried valuable time bonuses for general classification honours. "Sulzberger has now been on the podium for three minor stage placings, as well leading the sprint title and sharing honours in the criterium championship with Windsor. "It's nice to be in contention for those two championships, but I want to win a stage; I've been close this week and I was close last year, but I haven't won one yet," Sulzberger said. In an action-packed morning stage, finishing in the pretty seaside township of Metung, Stevenson led the bunch ahead of reigning Tattersall's Cup champion, Robert McLachlan from Canberra, and the current tour leader, Dean Windsor from Victoria. Windsor started the day holding a 10-second lead over South Australian mountain bike champion, Chris Jongewaard, who took fourth place in the stage, right on the back wheel of Windsor. Queenslander Miles Olman claimed his third top 10 placing of the tour, clinching fifth spot. The Tour of Gippsland continues throughout the weekend with a dual criterium and road stage in and around Traralgon on Saturday, and a closing 134 km road stage at Warragul on Sunday.
