Tattersall's Cup Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, August 2-6, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 2: Mallacoota, 93.8kmsDickenson sneaks into the leadBy Rod Morris in Mallacoota Eyeing off the sprinter's green jersey had pre-occupied the thoughts of Bathurst rider Dean Windsor so much that he had forgotten he was a chance to be elevated to the status of leader of the Tattersall's Cup Tour of Gippsland after the opening day. Windsor (19) picked up enough intermediate sprint bonuses to edge past the opening stage leader Sean Finning in an exciting second stage at Mallacoota in Victoria's South East. But in a day of surprises, Windsor was then upstaged by young Adelaide based rider Will Dickenson, who had finished third in the stage, but won enough time bonuses to upset Windsor's plans. Dickenson rode in last year's Tattersall's Cup series with some moderate results, although he did a claim a minor podium placing in the corresponding Tour of Gippsland. Dickenson finished third in the afternoon stage and with a 21 second gap before Finning and Windsor crossed the line, the youngster was suddenly the tour leader. In the confusion of the event however, Windsor was originally thought to the leader before judges confirmed their decisions. Finning had won the morning's criterium over 25 km, but lost his grip on the lead to the determined Windsor in the tough 94 km road stage. "I was only concentrating on trying get enough primes to win the green sprinter's jersey," Windsor said. "To end up in yellow is a real bonus and not something I was expecting." Former world junior points score champion, Miles Olman from Rockhampton in Queensland, won the road stage ahead of fellow Queenslander, Tony Mann, while talented young South Australian Will Dickeson surprised a few, when he took third place in the stage and moved into fourth spot overall. Windsor's lead over Finning is just four seconds with another tough day in the saddle ahead of the riders on Thursday with a criterium on Orbost and then a114 km race from Orbost to Lakes Entrance. The Tour of Gippsland will include a total of nine stages, finishing in Warragul on Sunday. Olman, winner of two world junior championships when racing in America two years ago, has only just returned again from the United States and looks to be in good form for this your. Olman was part of a healthy number of breakaways, who caught the peloton napping half way through the afternoon stage, which was held on eight loops of an 11.8 km circuit. The group included Finning, who was trying to protect his hold on the leader's jersey and Windsor, who was chasing green specifically – but at the same time wrenching the coveted material away from the Victorian. The technically tough and challenging course saw Olman, Mann and Dickeson sneak clear when the riders passed the last of the intermediate sprints and headed towards the final hill climb. Mann had looked after himself in the bunch, but was always there at the hill climb line, picking up enough points to take the lead in the King of the Mountain Championship. Over the last 8 km, the leaders were stretched out as Olman, Mann and Dickeson increased the tempo on their rivals. At the end, the trio had an 18 second lead over the chasing group, led home by Cody Stevenson (Vic), Fabio Calabria (ACT) and the new tour leader, Windsor, who picked a valuable one-second bonus for his stage placing. Pre-tour favourite, Robbie McLachlan, the reigning Tattersall's Cup champion, had a less than perfect start to the tour, losing almost three minutes to the leaders. But with seven stages still to be raced, the tour is of course still wide open.
