Deutschland Tour - ProTGermany, August 1-9, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 3: Minden - Goslar, 181.5 km"The first to the corner wins"By Hedwig Kröner Jens Voigt, always ready to be off the front, saw his never ending offensives rewarded again today, winning the second stage of the Deutschland Tour in Goslar. The CSC rider was part of a final breakaway trio also including Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) and Andrei Kashechkin (Astana), who placed second and third in that order. "It's great to win here in Germany," Voigt said after the race. "After the Tour, our first real race was the pair time trial in Bühl, and Bobby and I didn't succeed in defending our title - in fact, we ended up sixth, almost three minutes down... I must admit that that got me down quite a bit. Then, the prologue here was messed up because of the rain... so this does feel very liberating! I'm still here, my form is great and I'm happy to have won this stage. It's always great to win on one's home turf!" Voigt, Rebellin and Kashechkin attacked the field shortly before the summit of the last Cat. 2 climb, the Bockswiese. On the long descent towards Goslar, the main bunch, driven by Lampre riders, chased hard behind them, but even though the trio only had 10 seconds left over them with 5 kilometres to go, the leaders defended their advantage. Inside the town of Goslar, Voigt played his cards exactly right - and was prepared for it. "Most of the time, when you start to play poker in front, that's when the bunch reels you in and you don't win anything," added Voigt. "I was in the first break, too, and got caught before, then I was with the trio - and I told myself 'there's no way I'm going to have worked 30 kilometres to get taken in again.' And as I'm an experienced rider (smiles) I had looked at the finish profile beforehand and I knew that if you wanted to win here, you had to be first in the last corner before the line, because the last straight was very, very short. So my goal was exactly that: to get to that last corner in front, and from then on, it was all downhill and I could take the time to savour my win," he grinned. Second-placed Rebellin, who was on Voigt's wheel when they headed onto the final straight, actually slid away slightly with his rear wheel in that left-hand corner, but managed not to crash. But the Italian, of course, missed at least one pedalstroke because of it, and lost contact with Voigt. Fellow German Erik Zabel (Milram) eventually won the sprint of the main field, and sits now only one point behind the best sprinter, Vladimir Gusev, who also holds the yellow jersey in the race. Rebellin slipped into the jersey of best climber along the way. Rebellin's teammate Stefan Schumacher, present in the chase group, had tried to make a difference on the first climb of the day, 35 kilometres before the finish, in the fight over the mountains jersey. "We were eight guys to be caught again in the middle of the last climb," he explained. "With about one kilometre to go before the summit, those three got away. We had Davide Rebellin with them, so the finale was almost perfect for us. Second is not very far away from first - it's still a pity, though. I knew that Jens Voigt was pretty fast..." In the exciting finale, Schumacher hoped that it would come down to a sprint of the main group. "It was really tight, and it could have come together again, so I remained concentrated. If it had been a sprint, I would have been the one to go for it for Gerolsteiner. But the two were really fast so we couldn't see who won," he said, adding that his team's chances on the overall classification were far from gone. "Levi lost 40 seconds in the prologue, and in view of the mountain stages to come, that's not a lot," Schumacher continued. "On these stages, a lot can happen, and it will come down to gaps of minutes, not seconds. As to myself, I'll look how long I can play a role on GC, and I hope for a stage win." How it unfoldedThe 181 km stage from Minden to Goslar got underway under sunny skies, with one rider not departing: Oliver Zaugg (Saunier Duval). Three intermediate sprints on the flattish first two thirds of the parcours awaited the riders, as well as a fulminating finish with two Cat. 2 climbs to master before the descent down to the finish line in Goslar. After a few kilometres of strolling, the first attack of the day saw Jan Kuyckx (Davitamon-Lotto) try to get away, but he was quickly caught. From then on, the bunch got moving: 46 km/h were clocked in the first half hour, until Ronny Scholz (Gerolsteiner) made a successful solo move at km 23. The lone rider's advantage grew rapidly and reached its peak, 6'45, after 45 kilometres. Behind, team Discovery started to put on the pace, but bearing in mind the race profile, they knew that the Gerolsteiner rider would not be a threat to yellow jersey wearer Vladimir Gusev. What followed over the next kilometres looked more like a training ride: at about 40 km/h, the peloton didn't want to catch Scholz too soon, who in turn didn't hurry, either. In the third sprint of the stage, Laszlo Bodrogi (Crédit Agricole) could have captured the race lead going for the bonus seconds, as he had done in the two previous sprints, but Saunier Duval's Marco Pinotti finally took them. And Scholz' solo ride didn't last, either: around km 130, once the terrain got hilly, the Gerolsteiner man was back inside the bunch, which had picked up the pace in view of the first climb. Marco Fertonani (Caisse d'Epargne) was the first to attack the Discovery- and Liquigas-led peloton on the slopes up the Bad Grund - and got a gap. While nine riders broke off the front of the chasing bunch to catch him, Fertonani won the GPM. On the descent, 25 kilometres off the finish, a group of eight riders led the favourites by 20 seconds: Voigt (CSC), Kashechkin (Astana), Fertonani (Caisse d'Epargne), Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), Luengo (Euskaltel), Schröder (Milram), Failli (Liquigas) and Albizu (Euskaltel). But only one kilometre up the next, 5 km-long final climb, the Bockswiese, the leaders were caught once again by a main field. Fertonani attacked in search of Schumacher's mountain points jersey, and the German countered. Then it was Vinokourov's turn to go for it, and Rebellin reeled him in again. But Astana's assault wasn't over, and as Kashechkin jumped, Rebellin stayed on his wheel, just to pass him for the KOM points on the mountain summit, joined by Voigt. That's when the winning trio was established, and another small ascent after the Bockswiese did not hold them back: Leading a bunch of about 30 riders, in which race leader Gusev was on his own without teammates, Rebellin, Voigt and Kashechkin had 45 seconds when they hit the descent. Of course, everybody thought that the group would be able to swallow them again before the finish, but it turned out differently: The gap did diminish rapidly, and there were only 10 seconds left under the 5 kilometre-mark. But the trio worked well together until the end, and even though the bunch went full gas on the last clicks, they had apparently gambled just a tad too long... Once the red flag on the final kilometre was passed, Kashechkin started losing contact because he looked back too much. Then Rebellin followed Voigt around the last corner, slid away slightly and could only look at the German raising his arms in a V from behind.
