Deutschland Tour - ProTGermany, August 1-9, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - August 6: Bad Tölz - Seefeld (Austria), 189 kmDefending champ back in businessTough-as-nails Voigt takes race leadBy Anthony Tan Triumphing on the first mountain stage, defending champion Levi Leipheimer has put himself in contention to earn back-to-back victories in the Deutschland Tour. With three kilometres to go, the 32 year-old American attacked his two breakaway companions and quickly distanced himself, flying towards the finish in Seefeld and winning by a margin of two seconds over Andrey Kashechkin (Astana) and Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre-Fondital). "I believe so, I think it was the right thing to do," replied Leipheimer to ARD television on his attack just before the rain-soaked descent to the finish. "You could see how cold and wet it is here, and we were supposed to go to two-thousand metres... it was very dangerous, and it was definitely the right thing to do - it made a great race." "A new team next year - will you come back to the Deutschland Tour?" the American was asked. "I will always want to come back to the Deutschland Tour," he smiled. "I think it's a great race." Finishing on the same time was Jens Voigt (Team CSC) and Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir), the former hanging tough on the climb to Mösern, grappling back onto the chase group with three kilometres to go, and finding himself in the leader's yellow jersey by the day's end. "Jens had a hard time keeping up when Leipheimer attacked, but he sat with [Vladimir] Gusev for a while, who ended up burning out all of a sudden, and then Jens bridged up to a couple of others, who were pursuing Leipheimer," said CSC directeur-sportif Kim Andersen on team-csc.com. "We have two guys up top ahead of the queen stage on Monday, but it's a very tough stage up to St. Anton, so a lot can happen yet." Another who rode exceptionally well was Discovery Channel's Vladimir Gusev. The 24 year-old Russian and early race leader finished the stage alone in sixth place, 17 seconds behind Leipheimer, but more importantly, held onto his second place overall, and trails Voigt by just three seconds. Lampre-Fondital's Bruseghin is now third on GC at 13 seconds, while Leipheimer lies ominously in fourth, 18 seconds away from the lead. The late change to today's parcours as a result of inclement weather appeared to have little effect on the race outcome, and tomorrow, the peloton face another difficult mountain stage from Seefeld to Sankt Anton, with the finish 1,762 metres above sea level in St. Christoph am Alberg. How it unfoldedThe first mountain stage of the Deutschland Tour didn't go quite as planned. Weather reports coming from the Kühtal Pass informed race organisers of snow and rain, with temperatures a chilly one degree Celsius at the top. The peloton soon mounted a protest, refusing to climb the hors categorie ascent, and the parcours was changed at the last minute, where a diversion was found. The change saw the original 192.1 kilometre parcours cut by roughly 30 kilometres, and the peloton leaving Bad Tölz almost one hour later, at 11:40. Cofidis' Leonardo Bertagnolli was the only non-starter, having abandoned the race yesterday, making a field of 169 riders. Once again, the peloton got off to a brisk pace, averaging close to 50km/h in the first hour's racing. Shortly before the day's first intermediate sprint in Achenkirch (km 39,2), won by Gerolsteiner's Andrea Moletta, a group of 20 riders broke away, but the field was soon back together again. A break of 17 was next to go, causing the peloton to split into two, and while they were caught, the group behind the main field struggled to regain contact, still 40 seconds behind at Wattens (km 80). Shortly before half-past one, a promising sextet left the peloton's grasp at km 82.7, comprising Laszlo Bodrogi (Credit Agricole), Christian Knees (Team Milram), Jan Boven (Rabobank), Sébastien Rosseler and Kevin De Weert (Quick Step-Innergetic), and Paolo Fornaciari (Lampre-Fondital). Best-placed of the break on GC was Rosseler, 1'04 behind overnight leader Erik Zabel of Team Milram, and the Belgian Quick-Stepper soon found himself in the maillot jaune virtuel coming into the feed zone at km 88,9. By km 104, the front six had a lead approaching two and a half minutes, with group behind the peloton still chasing, 45 seconds in arrears. What the escapees' intention was remains a mystery (maybe they just wanted to keep warm), but they needed to make plenty more space between them and the peloton given what lay ahead. After skirting around the Kühtal Pass, the riders found themselves back on the original parcours, the break holding a 1'30 advantage behind the Gerolsteiner-led peloton with 122 kilometres covered. Just before the 20 kilometre to go mark, Rosseler attacked his companions, and began the final climb to Mösern alone. The Belgian lasted another 10 kilometres before he was caught by a rapidly-thinning peloton on the climb's lower slopes. As the select group of riders formed, the names of Evgeni Petrov, Marzio Bruseghin (both Lampre-Fondital), Inigo Cuesta, Andy Schleck, Jens Voigt (all CSC), Vladimir Gusev and Stijn Devolder (both Discovery Channel), Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Andrey Kashechkin (Astana), and defending champ Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) were all present; notable absentees were Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) and Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile). Two kilometres from the summit (5,1 km to go), Petrov, Schleck, Voigt, Gusev, Devolder, Piepoli, Kashechkin, Cuesta and Leipheimer were left, but the group was thinned to just three when Kashechkin attacked half a kilometre from the top, taking Leipheimer and Piepoli with him. Just after the KOM prime, on a piece of false flat, Leipheimer launched a savage attack that quickly distanced himself from his companions. Despite those behind him chasing as one, with Voigt and Bruseghin back in the chase, Leipheimer maintained his advantage to the line, successfully negotiating the tricky final right-hand corner and crossing the line with arms aloft. Kashechkin took second, Bruseghin third, with Voigt's fourth place good enough to take the race lead from up-and-coming Discovery Channel rider Vladimir Gusev.
