99th Paris-Tours - ProTFrance, October 9, 2005Main Page Results Results Espoirs Live report ProTour standings Zabel's farewell present to T-MobileBy Jean-François Quénet in Tours Even without the new World Champion Tom Boonen, also without Alessandro Petacchi among the fast finishers who called it a season before the very end, Paris-Tours is again the Classic for the sprinters. Erik Zabel claimed his third win at the end of the famous 2.6 km long avenue de Grammont, 11 years after the first one. Two years ago, he was also the first man to win a bunch sprint since Nicola Minali's double in 1995 and 96. Zabel, 35, is a never tired champion. He had good reasons to complain about his non-selection for the Tour de France, but he didn't. He just kept on working till he achieved something before moving to his new Italo-German team Milram. The 99th edition of Paris-Tours was his last race for T-Mobile. What a farewell! How it unfoldedHeld under sunny conditions, the race took off very quickly. The first serious breakaway started after the sprint of Bonneval (km 66). It was initiated by Dutchman Joost Posthuma (Rabobank) who was joined by France's Stéphane Bergès (Agritubel) and Spaniard José Ivan Gutierrez (Illes Baleares). Their maximum lead went up to 8'20 after 105 kilometres of racing, while Crédit Agricole and Davitamon-Lotto were the main chasers. With 50 kilometres to go, the main information concerned Danilo Di Luca's retirement. "I didn't go well today, the Italian told Cyclingnews. "Since the championship of Zurich, I had a pain in my left knee. At home, it wasn't too bad, but here in the race, producing efforts, I got pain in both knees. I have to recover before deciding weather I'll ride the Tour of Lombardy or not. At least, since I've won the Pro Tour in Zurich, the pressure is off and everything's more relaxed." Stijn Devolder was fully on when he attacked in the côte de Crochu at km 226. Aart Vierhouten (Davitamon-Lotto), Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) and Alejandro Valverde (Illes Baleares) went with him but only the two Belgians stayed away with 25km to go. Gilbert and Devolder produced an excellent show and took a maximum advantage of 58 seconds, but 25 seconds looked enough when they reached the avenue de Grammont. "We went flat out," the Walloon rider from Française des Jeux commented. "I believed I could be the winner until 200 metres to go. But Devolder refused to take a turn and that put an end to our initiative. It's a huge disappointment for me." The winner of the Three Days of De Panne actually respected the instructions of his directeur sportif Dirk Demol. "He told me not to ride at all after the flamme rouge," an also disappointed Devolder explained. "He said it was my only chance to beat him in a sprint. I'm very frustrated, even if I had theoretically less chances than Philippe to win a two men sprint. I could still hope to win a World Cup race, it could have helped me to get some responsibilities for the one day races in my team where it's difficult to show something apart from the Tour de France. I didn't want to look behind. If only I could have taken one turn, we could have made it. I regret it a little bit." When it came down to a bunch sprint, Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Caffita) was the first in action. "I was perfectly positioned behind him," eventual third place getter Allan Davis told Cyclingnews. "I didn't want to pass him too early, but before we went around the two breakaway riders, there was still a lot of room. But a wave stopped my momentum. Then it was too late. To finish third in Paris-Tours isn't a bad result but it's still not a win. I got one last year at this time in Italy (Tour of Piemonte) but I only have the Tour of Lombardy left now." As soon as he crossed the line, Davis looked for the judges and met race boss Christian Prudhomme to make sure that the video would be analysed correctly in case of incorrect behaviour by one of the other sprinters. Right on the line, Bennati was overshadowed by Zabel. "I was quiet before the sprint, the German indicated in a late press conference. With four or five kilometres to go, I was left without any team-mate but I didn't panic. I experienced this situation before in the years when Jakob Piil or Jacky Durand won the race. I thought: if we don't catch the two guys away, I'll sprint for third place and that's it, but I wasn't sure to be on the podium." Zabel was full of praise for Walter Godefroot, who was managing T-Mobile for the last time before getting pensioned. "He has always been there for me," he said. "He put a lot of confidence in me and kept his feet on the ground even there were private problems. As he's quitting now, this win has a particular sense for both of us. It's very good to finish a 13 year experience with such a success. It's been 13 years of dreams coming true. Now I'll continue my career with a German sponsor, Milram, who has put his faith in cycling despite all the difficulties, in the year 2006 when the soccer world cup will be held in Germany. It's a new challenge. Everyone talks about the new duo Zabel-Petacchi. It'll be important to work well together. I hear about a potential conflict but that will not happen, I can tell you. In a ProTour team, there's space for two. I don't have many years left but I still want to win more races." Not sure if Petacchi will give him space for Milan-San Remo, at least he'll be able to come back to Tours and try and win as many times on the avenue de Grammont as on the via Roma so far. Trivia note: Frank Vandebroucke was strangely initially classified 11th, although he pulled out of the race after breaking two bikes! It turned out to be his Mrbookmaker.com teammate Stefan Van Dijk.
