You can count on Bridgestone - and Koji Fukushima

Japanese rider becomes second Asian stage winner in race history

Just like the popular 70s advertising slogan, "Bridgestone - you can count on it", Bridgestone Anchor rider Koji Fukushima proved as strong and reliable as a Paris-Dakar triple-belted steel radial on the road to Tanah Merah.

Straight after the start in Gerik, the 31 year-old Japanese rider broke clear less than half a kilometre into today's 172.5 kilometre stage, braving stifling conditions, a bung knee and 132 other riders hungry for their own shot at glory, to cap off the finest win of his career in the best possible style. And as a consequence, he became only the second Asian rider to win a stage in the Tour de Langkawi's 10-year history.

"I am very glad for this victory and the emotions inside myself... I cannot explain," said a choked up Fukushima, who was virtually lost for words.

When Cyclingnews asked him whether his move was part of a personal or team strategy, Fukushima explained that his directeur sportif had given the team carte blanche (free reign) for the race, so the always attacking rider simply did what he knew best.

"Normally, it is my brother [Shinichi Fukushima] and Takehiro [Mizutani], the national champion of Japan, who are the aces [of the team] and we work for them. Almost all the time, I can't attack because I have to work for them, but for this race, my directeur Akira [Asada], he didn't give us a strategy, and he said we can race as we want, so that's why I attacked."

Finishing two and a half minutes clear of a mostly intact peloton led home by Denis Bertolini (Acqua & Sapone-Adria Mobil) and Graeme Brown (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), Fukushima did enough to claim the stage win, take the lead in the Asian rider classification and the mountains classification from British rider Kristian House, and become the new race leader of the Tour de Langkawi.

With sprint leader Ruben Bongiorno (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) finishing right out of the money in 47th place, it was 'arrivederci' to the green jersey for the Italian, while Brown said 'buongiorno' to green once again after losing his golden tunic to Fukushima, but assuming the lead in the sprints classification.

"We definitely underestimated him," conceded Brown to Cyclingnews on the strength of Fukushima's ride today.

"We thought we had him there for a while, but there was a fair amount of confusion in the bunch, and we just couldn't bring it back by ourselves. He was going too strong and nobody else wanted to work - - nobody wanted to make a decision - and it obviously benefited Koji. Towards the end, we thought he was in the [team] car actually, not riding - so we definitely underestimated him for sure."

Upon closing, the ever-gracious Fukushima thanked his team-mates as well as the family who put him up while racing in France. Though gracious he may be, the Bushido-like bravery shown today coupled with a less difficult parcours over the following stages will most likely see him in yellow for a good four to five days yet.

133 riders turned out for day three of the 2005 Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi, a 172.5 kilometre race from Gerik to Tanah Merah which included two first category climbs and was the longest of the race. As was the case yesterday, the sun was beating down relentlessly and temperatures were once again in the high 30s.

Right after the flag dropped Koji Fukushima pulled another one of his Jacky Durand early-dash moves, haring away and opening up a decent lead over a somewhat-sedate main field. After 9.9 kilometres of racing, the Bridgestone Anchor rider started the first category climb of Gunung Pilong with an advantage of 5'55 and continued to pull away as he climbed up to the 580 metre summit. He crested the KOM line 8'55 ahead of Adam Wadecki (Action) and mountains leader Kristian House (Great Britain). By the time he took full points at the hot spot sprint in Banding 10 kilometres later, he had added just under a minute to that total, giving him a nice buffer before the start of the second KOM.

It appeared that Fukushima would need it; the first category climb of Titiwangsa was 29 kilometres in length, and with the race favourites expected to let fly, his lead would surely plummet. Or so it seemed.

Although the Colombia Selle Italia rider Leonardo Scarselli lit the fuse when he jumped clear on the lower slopes, things settled right down again after his recapture. The bunch remained largely en masse until about six kilometres from the summit, when a flurry of attacks put a number of riders including yesterday's winner Ruben Bongiorno out the back and then created a big split in the bunch. Yellow jersey Graeme Brown was stranded in this second half, but things came back together after the summit, confounding expectations that the two first category climbs would provoke some sort of change to the overall classification.

Fukushima was delayed slightly by a rear wheel puncture before the top but nevertheless crested the summit 10'50 clear of the bunch. Such was his effort that by the time he passed through the feeding zone some 20 kilometres later, he had pulled out another minute and a half. Behind, riders such as Sergio Ghiasalberti (Domina Vacanze) tried to slip away from the bunch, but while he opened up some daylight for a while, it proved to be of no avail. By the time the lone leader took the top points at the second hot spot sprint in Jeli, he was still over 11 minutes clear of the Ceramica Panaria-led main field.

Things were starting to look pretty good. Between there and the finish line, 50 flat kilometres remained to be covered. Conscious that the yellow jersey (and the prospects for a third stage win, of course!) were now looking under threat, Brown's team started to ramp up the speed behind.

However, Fukushima had no intentions of giving up, drawing on his reserves of courage, strength and determination to stick at the task at hand. With 25 kilometres remaining, he was still a full 8'50 up on the heat-affected peloton, and while the intervening kilometres between there and the line saw the gap drop steadily, he still remained well clear. Fukushima hit the line after a stirring, stomping 172.5 kilometres riding solo a full 2'35 seconds ahead of Denis Bertolini (Acqua & Sapone), the now-deposed yellow jersey Graeme Brown, plus the rest of the main field.

The 31 year-old Japanese rider was, to put it mildly, delighted with his win. Grinning broadly, he graciously received the congratulations of his team-mates and fellow riders for what was a remarkable achievement. In addition to the merits of a 172 kilometre solo breakaway and the achievement of holding off a top-class peloton, he joined a small, select club today. Just one Asian rider had previously taken a stage in the race, namely Kam Po Wong in 2000. And while one other had worn yellow, Zhu Yongbiao (China) in 2004, his jersey came after the opening stage result was cancelled due to traffic on the finishing circuit.

For Fukushima, taking the stage win, the yellow jersey and the award for best Asian rider marked this out as a day he will remember for a long time. So too all those involved in Asian cycling.

Stage 4 - January 31: Bachok ITT, 20.3 km

Tomorrow's stage four time trial in Bachok may be just 20.3 kilometres, but it will nonetheless open up the first real gaps in the general classification. The riders will take in a totally flat circuit for the race against the clock. Fukushima won the prologue of the recent Tour of Siam and while his time tomorrow is unlikely to beat that of the European specialists, his two minute 38 second lead is almost certain to see him don another yellow jersey tomorrow afternoon.
