"Average" Jamo still better than the rest

Despite having an "average" ride according to his coach Kevin Tabotta, Tasmania's Mark Jamieson still managed to ride at nearly 48 km/h for 40 km to successfully defend his Australian U23 Time Trial Championship. "He really didn't get going until the last 15 km," Tabotta told Cyclingnews after watching his protege's ride from the following car. "I think on a good day he could be around 48'30."

Nevertheless, Jamieson's "average" time of 50'06 would have been good enough to give him the bronze medal in the Elite Men's race. And for the 20 year old talent, there is clearly more to come. "This year was a bit harder than last year, when I had really good preparation leading into it and I knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted to get it," said Jamieson. "This year was a bit more random and just learning to love the bike again after a pretty tough year in Italy.

"I think physically I was capable of doing things. It was just that I didn't see eye to eye with a few of my teammates and had a tough year mentally. It's part of becoming stronger in yourself and knowing when you truly believe in yourself."

Wagga Wagga boy Richard Moffatt was just two seconds behind Jamieson's 25'10 split on the first lap, but when Jamo turned on the afterburners on lap 2 and did a negative split, Moffatt had no answer. "I'm certainly happy with my ride," he said. "For the first half of the race I was close to Jamieson, which after speaking to Rodney McGee is was what I felt I had to do. Unfortunately in the last half of the race, Jamo was just stronger on the day. But I've put up a good fight and I'm happy with where I've finished compared to Jamieson."

Sydneysider Sam Lee didn't have the benefit of a course reconnaissance, but still managed a creditable third. "I was told it was a flat course," he said. "There was a bit of a drag on the way home which was a bit unexpected. But I thought I rode well today and next year I'll have to get on the time trial bike a bit earlier. I've got a long year ahead of me so it's a good way to start it. I'm only a second year U23 - I'm still young and one year behind these guys so hopefully one day I'll get there."
