Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, August 30-September 4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 31: Carlisle - Blackpool, 160kmHammond makes up for yesterday, Nuyens holds onBy Shane Stokes in Blackpool Home favourite Roger Hammond made up for his disappointment in missing the break yesterday when he won today's second stage of the Tour of Britain in Blackpool. The Great Britain rider sprinted home ahead of breakaway companion Robin Sharman (Recycling.co.uk/Litespeed), with another GB rider, 20 year old Mark Cavendish, showing great speed in taking the bunch sprint for third. Overnight race leader Nick Nuyens (QuickStep) was held up behind a crash in the run-in to the finish, crossing the line several seconds down. The race judges awarded the yellow jersey to yesterday's runner-up Micheal Blaudzun (Team CSC), only for the Belgian to successfully appeal on the grounds that the mishap had occurred inside the final three kilometres. Nuyens was therefore awarded the same finishing time as the bunch and will hold yellow going into tomorrow's mountain stage to Sheffield. Today's stage was marked by a long distance breakaway by three riders - Hammond, Sharman and Kevin Van Impe (Chocolade Jacques), the nephew of six time Tour de France KOM winner Lucien. These went clear inside the first 20 kilometres of racing and built up a maximum lead of 10 minutes and 40 seconds, before the inevitable charge by the peloton brought the gap right back down. With ten kilometres to go they had just over one minute on the bunch, and when Van Impe punctured five kilometres from the line it seemed certain that they would be caught. However, Hammond felt that the Belgian had been soft pedalling and once he was removed from the equation, both he and Sharman were able to fully apply themselves to the task at hand. It proved to be enough for them to fight it out for the stage win. "I am really happy to get this stage, because I was so angry about missing the move yesterday," said Hammond, soaked through after a heavy rain started falling 25 kilometres from the line. "I didn't think it was going to happen today because there was such a long flat headwind section towards the finish, so I thought it would be too hard. "I just wanted to prove to myself that the form is there. Yesterday was just a frustrating day, and a frustrating night - it is not a very nice feeling lying in bed last night knowing that the race is over on the first day. It is nice to make amends for it straight away - I thought it was going to be tomorrow but it worked out all right. "I was worried that we weren't going to make it when the time gaps were falling towards the end. I think we had a little bit of luck when the rain started falling, because the wind dropped then. I think if it hadn't been raining it would have been a bit of a problem. It was also a bit lucky that Kevin punctured as well, as he seemed to be soft-tapping a little bit. I saw him in the Classics and he was really strong there, so I didn't want to have too much of a risk with that guy. He punctured and so then I was able to give it full gas, because Rob was just hanging on anyway. He had ridden his heart out all day so I kind of feel a bit sorry for him, but one of us had to win." Nick Nuyens was happy to keep yellow, although he was annoyed with how he was treated at the end of the stage. "It was really dangerous in the last few kilometres with the rain and all the turns," he said. "There was a crash on the corner but the rules say that when that happens in the last three kilometres, the whole peloton gets the same time. The judges said that there was a big time gap and awarded the jersey to Blaudzun, but I was sure that I kept it, as the gap was only a second. When I went to the podium area, the judges told me to go away. I didn't like the way they treated me and myself and my directeur sportif argued that I had kept the jersey. Unfortunately they awarded it to Blaudzun, and then changed their minds. "The most important thing is that I kept the jersey, because the team worked really hard for me during the stage. But I didn't like how they handled the whole thing." An impressive Sharman took King of the Mountains primes at Shap Fells and Blease Hill, taking over the leader's jersey in that classification, while Hammond's sprint primes at Shap, Kendal and Hornby were enough to move him ahead of overnight leader Eric Baumann (T-Mobile) in that ranking. Jeremy Hunt's sixth place today combined with his third yesterday were enough to put him into the points leader's jersey. How it unfolded93 riders set out from the impressive Carlisle Castle for the start of the second stage of the Tour of Britain, a 162.3 kilometre race to Blackpool. Weather conditions were warm and hazy, with temperatures around the 20 degree Celsius mark. Six riders went clear from the drop of the flag, Bram Schmitz (T-Mobile), Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk), Iljo Keisse (Chocolades Jacques), Jonathon Clarke (Navigators Insurance), Duncan Urquhart (Scotland) and David Munoz Banon (Comunidad Valenciana) worked well on the draggy roads, opened up a 15 second lead over the peloton. A chasing group of eight riders went clear in pursuit, but were caught. Geraint Thomas (Great Britain) then tried to get across but he too was hauled back by the QuickStep-led peloton, as was Munoz's team-mate Juan Gomis Lopez. Next to try were the Fukushima brothers Koji and Shinichi (Bridgestone Anchor) and Edward Clancy (Great Britain). The Anglo-Japanese trio managed to bridge the gap, making it nine up front after 11 kilometres of racing. However the peloton was also closing, bringing the nine escapers back one kilometre later. A succession of attacks followed. Top British rider Roger Hammond (Discovery Channel) was trying to make up for a disappointing day yesterday and got away with Rob Sharman (Recycling.co.uk) and Kevin van Impe (Chocolades Jacques). Van Impe's teammate Matthew Gilmore crashed at the head of the peloton but remounted and chased. The gap continued to grow and after Penrith, the three leaders were 54 seconds clear. The bunch stalled soon afterwards and the gap soared to well over three minutes. This then doubled by the time they hit the first sprint at Shap (39.5 km), which went to Hammond ahead of Sharman and Van Impe. Shortly after the gallop, the riders raced onto the slopes of the second category Shap Fells (48.9 km). Sharman was first to the crowd-thronged summit, followed by Van Impe and Hammond. The gap over the main bunch was continuing to grow. Hammond led Sharman and Van Impe over the prime line at Kendal (63.7 km), following which the riders began to climb up to the summit of the second category climb of Blease Hill. Sharman was once again first past the KOH prime, taking the jersey in the process, with Van Impe and Hammond next. The peloton was by this point a full 9 minutes and 50 seconds back with 76 of the day's 162 kilometres covered. This gap subsequently rose to ten minutes and 40 seconds, at which point the peloton decided that it was time to pick up the pace. The QuickStep, Barloworld-Valsir and MrBookmaker - Sports Tech teams started working together, causing the gap to drop below the ten minute mark by the time Hammond beat Van Impe and Sharman for the Hornby sprint (96.5 km). From that point on it was mainly flat roads all the way to Blackpool and with the chase being bolstered by the input of the T-Mobile squad, the bunch continued to make inroads. With 40 kilometres remaining the gap was down to 4 minutes and 30 seconds. This dropped another minute by the 25 kilometres to go banner, at which point the grey skies now turned to heavy rain. With 20 kilometres to go, Hammond, Sharman and Van Impe were just 2 minutes 40 seconds up and their chances were looking bleak; then, ten kilometres from the finish, they had just one minute and seven seconds. When Van Impe punctured with five kilometres remaining their fate seemed to be sealed, but as Hammond said afterwards, he and Sharman actually went quicker as they felt that Van Impe had been saving himself for the finale rather than doing his share of the work. They safely negotiated their way through the final slippery corners in Blackpool and fought it out for the stage win, with Hammond taking it by five seconds from Sharman. Cavendish led home the main bunch a further five seconds later, making it a one-two-three for British riders.
