Het Volk winner Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step) today took the opening stage of the Tour of Britain, outsprinting Team CSC's Michael Blaudzun inside the final 300 metres of the stage to Castle Douglas. The promising 25 year-old Belgian went clear with the Danish veteran on the final climb of the day, holding a slender advantage over a 17 man chase group all the way to the line.

British rider Jeremy Hunt had two MrBookmaker.com team-mates in the second group but these were unable to take back the two leaders, with Hunt having to be happy with third place. Nuyens team-mate Michael Rogers took fourth, on the same time as Bert de Waele (Landbouwkrediet Colnago) and Welshman Yanto Barker (DFL Driving Force Logistics).

These riders were part of a 34-man leading group which went clear early in the stage. For approximately 80 kilometres this lead hovered under two minutes, dropping to 50 seconds just before the feed at Drumlandrig Castle, but once past this point the bunch gave up the ghost. The gap consequently jumped back up and with the break working well, went right out to over 22 minutes by the finish.

The front group stayed together until the final climb of the day, the category 3 ascent of Craignair. With just eight kilometres from the summit to the finish, it was clear that this hill would play a role in determining the stage result and, once on the slopes, the attacks started firing. Nuyens and Blaudzun were both strong and timed their move to perfection, ripping clear of the group before the top and riding hard all the way to the line.

"We broke away just over the top of the final climb," Nuyens said afterwards."Coming towards the summit there were eighteen or nineteen riders, with Michael Rogers from my team there. We had to make sure that one or other of us got into the move. Suddenly Blaudzun attacked near the top, so I closed the gap and we gave it everything. The gap was always one hundred metres, two hundred metres, one hundred metres. The MrBookmaker team were chasing behind but they were not fast enough. I felt good and I knew that Blaudzun is also a really strong rider. So we just had to go for it."

"I was pretty confident near the end. I went in the last 200 or 250 metres. By that point I was already thinking that I was the stronger of the two of us, so I was pretty sure that I was going to do it."

Today's stage featured strong crosswinds. Being Belgian, Nuyens was well suited to the conditions and knew what to do. "When there is sidewind you have to be sure that you are in the front of the peloton. At one point there was a lot of wind and Luca [Paolini] said that maybe we could try to split it by ourselves. We started to go for it and then the other guys helped immediately. We got away with 36 riders or so. It was a long way to go to the finish, but most of the riders were very good. In the beginning it was difficult to stay away because the bunch were close, but afterwards it was better. It was a big more sheltered, too, so there was less wind."

"Most of the time all the other riders in the break were working well. But the Spanish team (Comunidad Valenciana) were not pulling at all. They had four riders in the break but only came to the front when we got to the bonification sprints. We knew we had to look out for them but when it came near the finish, they were not so strong."

Nuyens said that the next few days will decide tactics. "We have just six riders so it will be hard to control the race. I think we have a nice gap on the rest of the field, but with six riders it will be too hard to control. Perhaps CSC will help us because Blaudzun is a good time triallist."

The Belgian finished third overall last year, 17 seconds behind race winner Mauricio Ardila. He finished second on the Tour's mountain stage from Leeds to Sheffield and is confident he can ride well again there this time round. "Last year I did the same stage and survived," he said rather modestly. "I was in the front group. So I think the stage is not too hard for me. But that said, the legs are different each year so we will see."

"I think Blaudzun will be my biggest rival for the overall. He was very strong today, and I think although the time trial is just four kilometres long, he will be good there. He is the biggest threat, I think."

A total of 95 riders lined out for the start of the Tour of Britain in Glasgow, hometown of 1984 Tour de France King of the Mountains Robert Millar. Luke Roberts of Team CSC did not sign on.

At 10.30 the riders wheeled away from George's square, scene of last night's Glasgow Grand Prix, in mild, bright conditions. Immediately after the drop of the flag Scottish international Duncan Urquhart (Scotland), who works as part of the Royal Tank Regiment, and Irish criterium champion Eugene Moriarty (Team Ireland) attacked and went clear. They were quickly joined by Jonathan Clarke (Navigators Insurance) and last night's Glasgow Grand Prix runner-up, Dean Downing, but the peloton reeled them in after two kilometres.

Next to try was Tony Bracke (Landbouwkrediet Colnago), who built a 23 second lead over the main field. Ten riders tried to get across but were hauled back, with Bracke suffering a similar fate after ten kilometres of racing had elapsed.

With strong crosswinds buffeting the riders, the Quick.Step team drove the pace and dragged a group of twenty-two riders went clear, with another thirteen clipping off in pursuit. These two merged in the village of Strathaven. Many of the big names in the race were present, although contenders such as Roger Hammond (Great Britain), Kurt Asle Arvesen (Team CSC), Kevin Van Impe (Chocolade Jacques T-Interim) and Luca Paolini (Quick.Step - Innergetic) were stranded.

Barloworld and MrBookmaker were active in driving the move while back in the bunch, Wales, Bridgestone Anchor and Recycling.co.uk were trying to narrow the one minute gap. However this continued to grow, rising to nearly two minutes after about 30 kilometres of racing.

By the time Comunidad Valenciana rider Javier Cherro Molina beat Tom Southam (Barloworld Valsir), Michael Blaudzun (Team CSC) and Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step-Innergetic) for the first intermediate sprint at Cumnock (53.1 km), this gap was 1 minute and 35 seconds. British road race champion Russell Downing, who had been part of the move, dropped out of the back of the break and was caught by the peloton.

The gap continued to fall to a minute and hovered around this mark for quite some time. Christoph Roodhooft (MrBookmaker - Sports Tech) crashed and was taken to hospital with facial injuries, while the rest of the race sped on to the second sprint of the day at Kirkconnel (73.9 km). T-Mobile's Eric Baumann (T-Mobile) took top points here but Southam nabbed second again, giving him more bonuses. Nuyens and Blaudzun were third and fourth.

The gap dropped to 45 seconds but then went out over two minutes before the first categorised climb of this year's race, the third category Clonehead (106.5 km): Bert de Waele (Landbouwkrediet Colnago) was first to the top, ahead of Antonio Olm Menacho (Comunidad Valenciana), last year's KOM winner Ben Day (Mr Bookmaker.com) and Tobias Steinhauser (T-Mobile). Shortly afterwards it started to drizzle, then rain, but cleared up again as the riders continued on towards the finish.

Baumann took the third sprint in Dumfries (131.1 km) ahead of Cherro Molina, Nuyens and Iljo Keisse (Chocolades Jacques T-Interim). From here until the day's second and final climb at Craignair (175.8 km) the group worked well together, stretching their lead to well over ten minutes. Once onto the climb hostilities commenced, with the riders attacking each other on the drag up to the summit. Nuyens and Bladuzun went clear just before the top and despite the best efforts of those behind, held a slender advantage all the way to the finish.

Nuyens kicked with 250 metres to go and was clearly strongest, eking out a 2 second gap in the sprint. A disappointed Hunt then led home the chase, missing out on the opportunity to take a stage win on home soil. The MrBookmaker.com leader will start tomorrow's 162.3 kilometre leg from Carlisle to Blackpool 3rd overall with another British rider Tom Southam in fifth. The Barloworld-Valsir professional finished 17th today but took second on two of the bonus sprints.

As winner of the first stage, Nuyens takes the lead in the points classification. He also tops the KOM listing, with T-Mobile's Eric Baumann leading the sprints category and MrBookmaker.com the team ranking.
