Sea Otter Classic - 2.2California, USA, April 14-16, 2005Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - April 15: Laguna Seca circuit race, 60/38 milesBy Kristy Scrymgeour The circuit race of Sea Otter proved grueling and exciting yet again today, with the yellow jersey changing hands in both the men and women's race. Tina Pic (Quark) managed to redeem herself after a slight jump of the gun in yesterday's prologue to take today's stage and the yellow jersey from Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile), whilst in the men's race later in the day, Health Net dominated a very early break to keep the jersey in the team, but it was a dark horse from across the Atlantic that took the stage win. On another beautiful day at Laguna Seca Raceway, the women set out for 17 leg-breaking laps of a circuit race around the raceway which consisted of a tough one kilometer steep climb each lap before descending the corkscrew and winding around the racetrack to the finish line. Lynn Gaggioli was the aggressor early in the race, trying on a couple of attacks, but both were reeled by T-Mobile and the race was relatively steady until the final seven laps of the race. T-Mobile then started to put the hurt on, with Ina Teutenberg putting in some strong attacks. A few breaks started to appear and one in particular that looked like it could stay away consisting of Teutenberg and Armstrong from T-Mobile; Erinne Willock and Christine Thorburn from Webcor, Lynn Gaggioli (Monex), Kim Anderson (Colavita Olive Oil) and Pic. Eventually the break was reeled in, but it wasn't long before another break went with four of the same riders. Thorburn and Willock were involved, as well as Teutenberg and Armstrong, but after hanging out there for a lap, the four didn't quite get it together and were caught by the field. It was on the last climb, as an attack was just being pulled back that Erinne Willock took the opportunity to counter. Armstrong went with her, as did Willock's teammate Thorburn and Tina Pic. The break stayed and became a four up sprint for the win with Pic showing her strength in the sprint to take the stage win and the leaders jersey with the time bonus earned. Taking second in the sprint was Armstrong, but her placing wasn't enough to keep the jersey. Thorburn rounded out the podium with Willock taking fourth. The bunch came in not far behind, keeping the times close and the race open for stage three. Pic was pleased after the race, claiming that "it made up for yesterday." Not only does Pic hold the leaders jersey going into the final stage, but she also holds the sprint and the mountain jersey. Despite her win, Pic explained that it wasn't an easy day at the office. "It was so brutal out there," she laughed, "especially when I was in that break. I didn't know who would attack [out of the break] and I just wished I had eyes in the back of my head. "Finally when that last break went, there were just four of us and Erinne just drove it, she was awesome." Despite losing the jersey Armstrong was still happy after the race saying that it was fun. "You know sometimes in women's racing nothing happens, but today there was always something happening, so it was great." With Pic now in the jersey, Armstrong is confident that T-Mobile can take it back off her tomorrow. "We have a strong climbing team and we're just going to be aggressive and try to isolate [Pic]. One of us can get away and win the race," she added. Lauren Franges (Victory Brewing) had another impressive ride to keep the U23 jersey and is looking forward to the final stage. "Its been a long time since I've been on the course and that last climb is really hard," she said. "You just have to grit your teeth and hang on." Franges who says she has been "keyin" for this race, nevertheless remains confident. The men's race, which was 27 laps of the same course, saw a surprise early break of 17 riders, of which eight remained in contention in the final few laps. Early in the day Health Net had four riders in the break including yellow jersey Gord Fraser ,as well as in form GC rider Chris Wherry, Mike Jones and Doug Ollerenshaw. Webcor had their GC rider Charles Dionne in the break initially as well as David Clinger, but Dionne shortly fell of the pace with Clinger explaining later that he has Charles has been sick. Most other teams had representatives in the break that they were happy with and the break simply stayed away. As the race proceeded however, the pace and the climb slowly took effect and the bunch whittled down bit by bit. By the business end of the race, eight riders remained, including Fraser, Wherry, Ollerenshaw, Jones, Cameron Hughes (Subway), Daniel Ramsey (Team Seasilver), Clinger and Ivan Stevic (Aerospace Engineering). In the final few laps the action didn't stop and Health Net decided to use their numbers to get a rider away. Their moves backfired however as the other riders were able to cover their moves and Fraser was feeling it on the hills. Finally a move by Ollerenshaw split the group into two taking Wherry, Ramsey and Stevic with him but leaving yellow jersey Fraser behind. On the final lap Fraser took off from his group in an attempt to bridge solo or at least minimize his time loss for GC. The race ended in a four up bunch sprint with the unknown Serbian rider proving too fast and taking a win that heard him screaming with delight for some time after. Taking second place was Wherry, his ride moving him into the lead overall, with Clinger and Ollerenshaw taking third and fourth respectively. Fraser made it in just behind the leaders, keeping himself in contention as another card to play for Health Net in tomorrow road race. Stevic was excited as he explained that this year is his first time racing in the US. He was in Redlands where he showed his talent a little, but nobody really knew what he could do. "I like courses like today," he said. "They become natural selection. If you have the legs, you're there." Stevic rode a smart race, but aggressive race and says he is looking forward to tomorrows race, however he knows it will be tough after todays effort. "I think tomorrow is going to be hard," he said. "Its long and there are a lot of hills. The legs are not going to be like today either, but I have good teammates and they will work for me." Fraser said that Stevic was not a total dark horse. "We saw him in Redlands and he made some impressive moves," he explained. "When Europeans come to the US they mean business." "During the race I wasn't sure where he was on GC. He had a stage win in mind and we were racing for the overall. As it turns out he's closer than we thought," he added. Of the Health Net tactic to attack hard in the later stages of the race, Wherry admitted that the result was a little disappointing. "We had the numbers and we tried to do some attacking, but the others were able to cover us." As for Fraser, his thought were that it wasn't really his day. "I didn't really have the legs to go with some of the attacks and I was just trying to set up moves for Chris and Doug. Its not a total disaster. We still got second in the stage and we still have the lead." Wherry agreed that the odds are definitely in their favour tomorrow. As well as having the yellow jersey, "we still have so many guys in contention of overall." Another great ride for the day was young Kyle Gritters (Team Seasilver) who took the U23 jersey at the end of the day. "It was good to have Dan [Ramsey] in the break," he said. "It allowed me to just sit in and follow wheels. Eventually I noticed that Sterling [Magnell, yesterday leader from Monex] wasn't with us anymore and I knew I had the legs to keep it going."
