Prologue - April 14: Laguna Seca, 3km
Fraser, Armstrong open Sea Otter with TT wins

Sea Otter's Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada Road Stage Race kicked off today with a three kilometer prologue starting at the top of the famous corkscrew on the Laguna Seca Raceway. Despite an initial calling that Tina Pic from Quark Racing team had clocked the fastest time in the women's event, a revised time sheet finally proved T-Mobile's Kristin Armstrong to be the fastest rider on the day, followed by her teammate Ina Teutenberg and Quark's Candice Blickem. In the men's event, Health Net came out on top once again, this time with Gord Fraser taking the win over his teammate Chris Wherry. Last year's winner Hayden Godfrey, now riding for Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada took out third fastest time.
With quite strong gusty winds on the raceway, many riders were undecided as to whether they should ride discs as they were getting blown around down the corkscrew in the warm-ups. However, the full time trial bike proved to be the way to go as riders flew around the short course in just over three minutes. Pic was excited after the women's race saying her race had gone smoothly despite being nervous about the wind before the race. "I must have been between gusts during my race, because it wasn't that bad. It was a good call to use the disc, it was much faster."
Just as Pic was ready to mount the podium, she was told she in fact hadn't won, but came in fourth behind her teammate Blickem. In true Tina style, her response was all smiles with a simple "Oh well."
Taking second place in the prologue and a true favourite of the overall tour going on recent form was Teutenberg. "I was a bit disappointed with my ride today," she told Cyclingnews after the race. "Not so much because of the result but because I thought I didn't ride the corners well."
As for whether she feels up to winning the overall she said, "We all try to win. That's why we come to bike races. We are in a good position as we have four people high on general classification."
Race winner Armstrong was happy with her ride and felt good. "Its such a hard course. You only have to make one mistake and you can lose seconds."
Agreeing with her teammate, Armstrong was happy that T-Mobile have four riders right up there on GC. "We're all within six seconds of each other and we all have the ability to do well on the power hills over the next couple of days."
After the men's race Fraser also looked very happy with his result. "Its relieving after Redlands, where I had a bit of a sickness," he explained. "I was nervous that I wouldn't be 100 percent for this race.
"We're in good position," he added. "Having only six per team, its going to be harder to control the race, but we have a strong team here and its nice to know we have a couple of us up in the GC."
Fraser's teammate, Chris Wherry was surprised at his podium placing in today's prologue despite his excellent form of late. "I know I'm a reasonably good at time trials, but with guys out there like Gord and Hayden who have so much power, I'm psyched to be in the top three."
With a good chance of winning the overall, Wherry made the point that this race is very important for the team as their sponsor Health Net is from the area. We have a good squad here, especially if this wind keeps up. We've had a good start but there's a long way to go. The next two days are really hard. That climb back into Laguna Seca in the road race in particularly hard. Its going to break things up."
Up against the Health Net team Wherry says are "a lot of strong riders. Sierra Nevada are riding very well and the field is deep."
