Stage 6 - September 9: Benicarló - Castellón de la Plana, 157 km
Freire victorious whilst Petacchi gets lost in the desert

Whilst Rabobank ensured that Petacchi got well and truly lost in the Desierto de las Palmas, an elite group of the remaining Vuelta sprinters go to show off their wares in the flat run into hot and sticky Castellón this afternoon, and most if not all of them were intent on taking advantage of the missing Italian.
The Rabobank team set an stifling pace along the rolling Mediterranean coast. Their aim, it seemed, was to dislodge Petacchi and bring in the day's two man escape before the final crest and plunge. Rabobank managed to lay the groundwork for both of these and left their two-time World Champion, Oscar Freire to fend for himself over the final climb and on the run into Castellón.
Despite Cofidis, and to a much lesser extent T-Mobile, commandeering the head of affairs across the flat coastal plain that followed the climb and led into the city, it was the Cantabrian sprinter who came out of tops, just pipping Erik Zabel (T-Mobile) on the line, again.
How it unfolded

The peloton rolled out of Benicarló in the early afternoon under warm, hazy skies with 157 km of undulating terrain ahead of them. The first sprint at Cervera del Maestre (km 14.6) saw, somewhat surprisingly, Roberto Heras (Liberty) take the points ahead of Juan Manuel Garate (Lampre) and Rubén Plaza (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme). At km 37, Manuel Quinziato (Lampre) attacked and was chased by Martin Hvastija (Alessio) and Kevin Hulsmans (Quick.Step). Hvastija fell off the pace at the foot of the Puerto de la Mirona, leaving Quinziato and Hulsmans with a 1'26 lead.
The two leaders extended their advantage over the peloton to over 11 minutes at one stage, but when Rabobank started riding before the halfway mark, the gap came down quickly. It was seven minutes at 77 km to go and steadily came down until the pair were within striking distance at the foot of the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas with 35 km to go. Illes Balears and Liberty Seguros helped to mop up the leaders on the climb and the race began anew.

Some of the real damage was caused by Isidro Nozal (Liberty Seguros), whose strong surge resulted in the fracture of the bunch. The Alto was not too long and not too steep, but it was significant enough to cause damage, and it did. The likes of Pecharroman, Zubeldia, Astarloza, Astarloa, Cardenas and Di Luca all fell off the pace on the climb, the latter losing well over 12 minutes in the end.
Over the top it was Mancebo taking the points and adding to his mountains tally, with some 30 riders in the lead group and another 50 or so chasing back on. The two groups did come together at the foot of the descent and Cofidis rode hard for the rest of the way into Castellón.

Into the last four kilometres with the wind at their backs Cofidis drove those who had got over the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas in an attempt to place Stuart O'Grady in the best possible position. Behind O'Grady was Quick Step's Horrillo and then Zabel. Well placed behind were a few who can at times hold their position in a rapid finish, such as Perdiguero, Valverde and Moreni.
A couple of Paternina riders, Fernandez and Ferrio, tried to mess things up for the sprinters as they entered the final two kilometres and if anything gave, Cofidis some respite for the final surge. Through the large roundabout near the end of the long flat straight, the bunch was becoming unruly, the course took a sharp right and then through another smaller roundabout. From there it was an open run to the line.
O'Grady got his lead out from a long way. Pedro Horrillo (Quick.Step-Davitamon) was the first to initiate the final surge and was followed by the freckled Aussie. But from behind and to his left came the familiar bulldog style of T-Mobile's Erik Zabel. Zabel went and O'Grady had to react to his burst. Swinging wider and challenging Zabel came Freire, who for the second time this year had the German's measure. The last of course was Milan-San Remo.

Funnily enough the stage podium positions ended up being identical to those at San Remo: Freire, Zabel, O'Grady; and possibly this was not pure chance. The finishing group was reasonably large, 78 riders in all and contained a mixture of what you might call classicists, climbers and strong power sprinters. The group was selected by the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas, which with its stony pine covered ridges that rise out of the Mediterranean landscape, brings to mind the finishing climbs of La Primavera.
An interesting thing about the bunch finish was the number of non sprinters who were placed high in the end - for example Garzelli was 7th, Juan Manuel Garate was 9th, Aitor Gonzalez was 14th and Cunego was 15th. These sorts of positions are not achieved in the kind of sprint we saw today by simply hanging in with the bunch to the end with the aim of keeping out of trouble.
Coming up
La Vuelta doesn't stop. Tomorrow we have a similar sort of day in some ways to today. A rolling coastal and hinterland route peppered with a couple of climbs - a Cat. 2 and Cat. 3 which fall close together smack bang in the middle of the day. Then on Saturday comes the big day out, 40 kilometres flat stick across the coastal plain. You might think after all of that a rest day might be on the agenda soon. But before we get there we have three days of solid back to back climbing. Each day with a summit for a finish.
As things stand, the top of the general classification is already starting to take on a solid shape. And these next few days' encounters will surely cause some real meaningful selections. By Tuesday of next week, we will know who is who in La Vuelta for 2004. The flat time trial will give us some indication, but then the real climbers will have a chance to try and recover their losses over the three following stages.
Some names are starting to stand out: Landis, Hamilton and Aitor Gonzalez might do some damage on the flat time trial. But then these riders will have to turn around and match it with Garzelli, Evans, Cunego, Heras, Beloki, Menchov, Mancebo, Sastre, Garate and Valverde immediately thereafter.
Triki Beltran continues the USPS hold on the gold jersey despite them "not being here to win". Francisco Mancebo took the final climb today and now wears the mountains jersey. O'Grady's third was surely a disappointment for the Australian but his day out in the wind yesterday and today's third place give him a slender lead in the points jersey.
All we can say is stay tuned to La Vuelta. It won't get boring.
