59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - September 8: Zaragoza - Morella, 186.5 kmMenchov nears lead, but US Postal keep goldBy Martin Hardie in Morella Enter the mountains, and although we have yet to reach the big climbs, things really livened up in La Vuelta with this afternoon's finish in Morella. The final climb was short - a bit over 2 kilometres - but sharp enough to really start the process of sorting out the contenders from the pretenders. And today after the winds across from Aragon and through the ravines and pines of Valencia, the bells tolled for Russian Denis Menchov (Illes Balears) as he surged through the steepest section of the finish, leaving his chasers behind to sort out the minor places. A happy and surprised Menchov told Cyclingnews afterwards that, "I thought that I could be close, like in the day at Soria, but I didn't think I would stand out and that I would be amongst the primeros..." Menchov's move was enough to move him to third place on the general classification, just four seconds behind new leader Manuel Beltran (US Postal-Berry Floor) who finished nine seconds down today in ninth place. Beltran's teammate Floyd Landis is tied with him on time but as Landis finished behind Beltran in 14th today, Beltran took the jersey. It's the fifth day in a row that US Postal has kept the gold jersey in its ranks, incredibly being worn by four different riders (Landis, Van Heeswijk, Joachim and Beltran). "I have never seen anything like this," said USPS team director Johan Bruyneel. "The only time we did something close to this was last year (at the Tour de France) when Victor (Hugo Pena) took the jersey following the team time trial. However, it's quite logical it happens because if you win the team time trial stage with a margin like we had, it's quite possible the jersey goes around in the team. Plus, our tactics make it easier by putting riders in breaks and taking advantage. It's a great opportunity for some guys who are never get in the spotlight, and it motivates them even more." How it unfoldedThere was an expectation that today's stage was going to continue the process started in Soria's wet finish, and those expectations were met. The day started with plenty of attacking, but it wasn't until km 55 when a big group of 17 riders managed to get away. After building up a modest lead of 3'00, the group split with 65 km to go to leave five strong men in front who had their minds set on staying away until the finish. The five were Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis), Unai Osa (Illes Balears), Bram Tankink (Quick.Step-Davitamon), Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank) and Nicolas Jalabert (Phonak). The main obstacle in their way was the long ascent of the Cat. 2 Puerto de Torremiró which commenced with 22 km to go. With Kelme driving the peloton at a savage pace behind them, their advantage disappeared as the climb commenced, with Osa and Jalabert the last men to resist the chasers. But O'Grady also profited from the move, taking all three intermediate sprints to give him the lead in the points classification. Even before the fiesta started on the Torremiró, Alexandre Vinokourov was behind and in trouble. He and the rest of his T-Mobile were apparently suffering from a bout of food poisoning, which forced Santi Botero, Torsten Hiekmann and Steffen Wesemann to abandon. Before the climb really got under way, Vinokourov had already lost time and would continue to do so rapidly, eventually finishing over 17 minutes down in the last group. Then the party started, and for sure it wasn't to the liking of all. Liberty assumed the head of affairs in the place of Kelme/Postal and the peloton started to thin down. All seemed under Liberty's control save for Aitor Gonzalez who was hanging off to one side. Not content with that, he jumped hard along the left hand edge of the road and got a gap. Initially only Di Luca and Perdi reacted and that was enough to bring La Vuelta to life - not that it hasn't been alive with all the difficulties provided by the wind in recent days. Landis did the work of dragging the depleted group back to their wheels. Aitor pulled over and left Di Luca with the task of leading, with Perdi glued behind. Luis Perez was making himself prominent and soon took over the job of driving the action. The peloton behind was suffering (not as much as Vino) but nonetheless not feeling invited as the strongmen were causing untold damage ahead. Soon it was the task of Saunier Duval to light the fire. Piepoli went hard and was chased by Cunego - the road had a line of climbers and power men lined across it. It was then Dario Cioni's turn - Piepoli and Cunego reacted again and the group was starting to become a who's who of who has legs for la Vuelta: Landis, Cunego, Valverde, Beloki, Heras, Evans, Mancebo, Menchov, Gonzalez and Garzelli. Take your pick, the fight club has begun. After all this havoc had been meted out, 24 riders were left at the head of affairs, and there were still five kilometres of the Torremiró left to climb. At this point, Kelme took charge setting a striking pace to the summit - Garcia Quesada took a long, long, turn as two groups struggled to regain contact, the second and larger of those containing race leader, Benoît Joachim. At the summit the Joachim group had managed to hold a 56 second gap, while a smaller group in between was 44 seconds down. It seemed that Landis, who was safe in the head group, was riding himself back into gold. Accompanying him was his teammate Triki Beltran, who was also a candidate for the jersey as he started the day on the same time as Landis. On the descent the two chasing groups started to peg back some time, even with Kelme setting a pace in excess of 65 km/h at the front. As they neared the start of the short but biting ascent to the medieval walled town of Morella, perched upon a outcrop of stone that rises out of the Mediterranean terrain of the Communidad Valencia, for a moment it seemed the chasers might actually make it back. But even if they did they would surely suffer as the carnage was about to start all over again. A right hand turn and the climb really started with 2.5 km to the top. Kelme drove it around the first bend and then Saunier's young Catalan, Joaquim Rodriguez jumped strongly and appeared to create a big gap as he took each turn. Then the guy who started it all came at him - Aitor Gonzalez - who told Cyclingnews after the finish that if he had to prove anything to anyone, that person was himself. He was and is justifiably content with what he had shown himself today. Through the gate into the start of the town, Aitor was leading Rodriguez, but lo and behold they were chased down by Isidrio Nozal, who was one of the three Liberty's ensconced at the front. Nozal brought with him all the day's usual suspects including Luis Perez, Mancebo, Valverde, Perdi and Cunego. At 500 metres to go the ascent dipped down for maybe 50 metres and then started a steep, paved section that rose sharply for 150 metres before flattening to the finish. Denis Menchov moved just before the dip started and then used it as a launching pad to really surge up and over the steep bank. Aitor, Valverde, Piepoli all gave chase but the Russian used this section well to his advantage and was not to be stopped as he powered to the line. So ended a spectacular stage - and so the route had shaken up La Vuelta. The contenders list is starting to smell of a few familiar faces, some of them who were in the hunt in Soria - Landis, Cunego, Valverde, Beloki, Heras, Evans, Mancebo, Menchov, Gonzalez and Garzelli to mention them all again. With Vino losing over 17 minutes and rolling in in 180th place, the T-Mobile camp obviously has a new leader: Cadel Evans sits comfortably in 5th place overall behind the new race leader, Manuel 'Triki' Beltran. The problem for Cadel is that it is on the cards that his team will desert him - three have already pulled out and it wouldn't be a surprise if Vino also took a flight home. In fact there is some doubt as to whether T-Mobile will turn up at all tomorrow leaving Evans once again out of luck and high and dry. Tomorrow's run down parallel to the Valencian coast includes some more climbing - the Cat. 3 Puerto de la Mirona, and the Cat. 2's of the Coll de la Banderet and Alto del Desierto de las Palmas. However, the Desierto de las Palmas peaks 25 km from the finish and the run into Castellon is more or less flat. Unless someone steals a march we should expect the top of the GC: to remain stable until the rouleurs' day out on Saturday when we have the flat 40 kilometre time trial.
