59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live coverage Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - September 7: Soria - Zaragoza, 167 kmPetacchi keeps his nose in frontJoachim maintains the leadershipBy Martin Hardie in Zaragoza Fassa's sprint machine Alessandro Petacchi blew his challengers away in a tightly fought and unorthodox sprint to the line in the windy city of Zaragoza. The day was marked again by wind, echelons and punctures as the field traversed the 167 kilometres from the high country of Soria down and across the spaghetti western lands of Aragón. Petacchi said that the sprint victory was achieved in an unorthodox fashion for the Fassa train as a result of the wind. "It was a very difficult sprint because there was a lot of wind in our face...so I spoke to my teammates and we started the train with about three kilometres to go because three kilometres into a head wind is a very long way . My team mates worked a lot with T-Mobile. I had spoken a little with Erik [Zabel] because when there is wind it is always very dangerous." The finishing straight had a slight uphill grade and was also into a strong wind. As the peloton, strung out, turned right into the straight, three Fassas and Zabel detached themselves from the front. Closing in and looking strong was Alessio's Angelo Furlan, who was mixing it up with the big guns at the front, while O'Grady and Freire also looked good. Guido Trenti gave the first kick with Petacchi glued behind him. With 150 metres to go Petacchi jumped down the left hand barriers, and for a moment it seemed Zabel and Freire might challenge him for the win but once again the Italian was too strong. Petacchi had suffered two days ago when he obtained his first win in this year's Vuelta, but today, although the wind blew forcefully into the riders' faces for most of the day, he acknowledged that felt better, but "more tired" at the same time. As almost all 187 riders finished in the same time today, the overall lead remained unchanged with Luxembourger Benoit Joachim keeping the gold jersey. The US Postal-Berry Floor rider even took another 2 bonus seconds at the first sprint to extend his advantage over teammate Max van Heeswijk to 18 seconds. Seven US Postal riders still occupy the first seven positions on GC, a legacy of their strong ride in the team time trial on Day 1. How it unfoldedThe day was no doubt marked by that ever present factor, the wind. A wet, grey morning at the start gradually cleared, but the wind was still present across the spaghetti western landscape. When it wasn't a headwind (which it was for much of the day) it tended to wreak havoc from the side. During the final third of the stage as the hunt for the day's four escapees slowly got under way, the peloton suffered as it crawled at snail's pace into the wind. Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Julien Laidoun (Ag2R Prevoyance), Xavier Florencio (Relax-Bodysol) and David Fernandez (Paternina-Costa De Almeria) came together to form the break of the day just under 100km from Zaragoza. As they progressed through the low lands of Aragon they managed to eke out and hold a steady gap of about 2'50. Maybe Iñaki Isasi's lack of smile this morning was caused by a premonition that he had a hard fight ahead. Behind the break on the stretch after the day's second meta volante at Pozuelo de Aragón (km 103) there were a number of crashes that split the riders apart. The contributing factor along with the wind was the very narrow back road that the route followed. The pattern continued even after the roads widened and the latter parts of the stage were marked by a number of groups being dislodged off the back. At various times riders found themselves solo or in small groups, seemingly marooned and having to battle the elements in order to make their way back to the relative shelter of the bunch. At the front of the peloton it was a continual fight for position as the front was by far the safest place. Into the last 40 kilometres the road switched to the left, and although a range of ochre hills created some shelter, the peloton became more animated as the speed lifted and the need to hold the head of the race become even more vital. The wind was gusting to the right hand shoulder of the riders and at one moment a team seemed to be safe at the front then in a moment they appeared all together in an effort to drag a lost team leader back to the peloton's care. Illes Baleares Denis Menchov, Saunier's Joseba Beloki, Cafes Baque's Felix Cardenas and Saeco's Damiano Cunego were all examples. For whatever reasons, punctures, falls or the loss of a good position, these four leaders found themselves out the back and needing the assistance of their teammates to salvage the operation. Cunego's rescue operation was a little suspect. He fell near the back of the bunch and got up facing the wrong direction and in need of a new front wheel. He got a new bike soon enough but with the speed now slightly more respectable he was high and dry alone and well behind. He got under way and soon he had teammates with him. As the team got its train under way one of the team cars positioned itself at the front and to the right of their echelon, perfect for breaking the wind. If that wasn't enough, the Saeco caravan was soon joined by the second team car. The show didn't carry on for too long and there was no retribution dished out by the jury. In the end, all made it back into the fold and with a few suicide breaks on the run into Zaragoza and the speed beginning to kick in even with the headwind, all was being prepared for a bunch sprint. And as we saw, it was every other fast man's nemesis that once gain stole the show. In the wake of the falls and wind, a number of riders have added injury to their tired bodies. Notable amongst them are Trentin (a contusion to the left calf), Hamilton (grazes to his gluteo, right knee and arm), Spezialetti (cranial and lumbar contusions) and Artetxe, who had been left on the side of the road for quite a while after his crash (contusions to right wrist and elbow). Artetxe was later taken to hospital for x-rays. Tomorrow's stage should provide some fireworks at the end. Having two classified climbs in the last 11 kilometres. The Cat. 2 Puerto de Torremiró comes first and climbs over 13 km. The sting in the tail is the Cat. 3 to the medieval city of Morella. The road winds up three kilometres into the ancient walled city with its castle perched atop. Not only spectacular scenery but more than likely the site of a real cycling spectacular tomorrow afternoon. PhotographyImages by Unipublic
