59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 6: Burgos - Soria, 157 kmValverde confirms his classBy Martin Hardie in Soria Today in Soria, Alejandro Valverde showed the world his class when he won a gruelling wet uphill sprint to take Stage 3 of La Vuelta. For Valverde, the year has been interrupted by the ongoing Kelme debacle which has kept him off the roads for various periods of time, out of the Tour and so far out of next year's Pro Tour. But nevertheless he has - when able to race - managed fifteen victories in all. Like Perdiguero's, those wins have all been in the home vueltas: Majorca, Valencia, Murcia, Pais Vasco, Castilla Léon, and most recently when he totally dominated the Vuelta a Burgos. And like Perdiguero, maybe his victories haven't been given the attention they deserve outside of Spain. Perdi matched it with the best in San Sebastian and today Alejandro Valverde showed the international peloton that there is no keeping him down. Valverde is one of those riders who has seemed all year to be able to win on any terrain - he has taken both bunch or small group sprints and he has won in the high mountains, and today he cast away any shadow of a doubt about his international status. After the race, Valverde said that he had, "A meeting this morning with Vicente Belda and they talked about the hard repecho at the end". Both Valverde and Belda seem to have had a good hunch when they considered this stage one marked in red. Valverde's win also puts back on the agenda Kelme's (or whatever they might be next year) entry/lack of acceptance into the Pro Tour. Both Kelme and Euskaltel-Euskadi haven't yet gained entry and the "unofficial" quota for Spain is already full. With Valverde having signed for two more years with the Kelme management, he seems to like it where he is. That means no Classics, but for the time being his objectives seem clearly focused on the Vuelta and the World's (in which he finished second in 2003). "I think I can fight for the general here...both (La Vuelta and the World's) are super important for me," he said. Valverde's win which came about over the last two or three kilometres dominated the day's stage in one way. But of course the day also saw a long breakaway which for while seemed to be safe without any threat from behind. Hulsmans, Veneberg, Joachim and Flickinger got away with 110 kilometres to go. At one point along the way with 48 km to go, the quartet had nearly a 10 minutes gap. USPS's Benoît Joachim managed to secure all of the bonus time from the sprints en route, and with those was anointed the man to succeed Max van Heeswijk as the race's new leader. He thus the gold jersey not only in the USPS camp but within Benelux as well, and Joachim is the first Luxembourger ever to wear the Vuelta leader's jersey. Joachim confirmed that the plan for the day was, "To get someone into a good escape and to try and hold on to the jersey that way". Consistent with the USPS relaxed outlook, he added, "We will keep thinking about things day by day ... we don't have any plans for the general." With the day's break neutralised only seven and a bit kilometres from the finish, it was time for the Vuelta to get down to its business end. And again today we saw how a complete peloton can be torn apart in La Vuelta in a matter of a few kilometres. The result was in the end a sprint victory to Valverde and in the longer view, the start of a real sorting out at the top with a number of the strongest contenders all finishing in the eleven man lead group. Of course it is a long way to go in La Vuelta but the fact that Valverde, Mancebo, Menchov, Heras, Garzelli, Aitor Gonzalez, Damiano Cunego, Cadel Evans and Alexandre Vinokourov all arrived together with Freire and O'Grady, marks the start of the real race. Admittedly a small start but one that might set the tone for some tricky days to come. Amongst this group are some of the real challengers - riders who have not come here to relax or see how it pans out. There are also some challengers that finished not too far behind today: Hamilton, Beloki, Zubeldia, Sanchez, and Sevilla are amongst the large group that came in at 15 seconds. But more than often, La Vuelta is about being there in those tight, almost surprise encounters that are so often combined with the effects of the weather and terrain. The final kilometresToday's finish was a case in point. Kelme shared the work in pulling back the break of the day sharing the load notably with Cofidis, amongst others, they obviously thought the arrival would suit O'Grady. When Hulsmans, Veneberg, Joachim and Flickinger were caught with just over 7.5 km to go, the peloton was strung out in one long, long line as it looped around the back of the finishing city of Soria, in the heavy rain. As they rolled down into the valley of the Rio Duero, Vini Caldirola was really driving it along. At the same time, but unrelated, Erik Zabel was off the back with a flat. On the entry into the city itself Paolini had a determined go obtaining himself a solo victory - as from here it was more or less uphill to the finish. The road wound up and around apartment blocks and Paolini was holding a nice but not comfortable gap. Behind, the peloton seemed to be strung out for a kilometre around outcrops of buildings as it snaked its way into the city. Past stone walled houses Paolini continued to climb. As he entered the second last kilometre, a group of six or so seemed to be detaching itself from the front of the chasing bunch - Freire, Vinokourov, Garzelli and Valverde were all present at this point. The road then dipped a little before the kick up to the finish - a repecho as they call them here in this part of the world. The front runners had made themselves a gap as they went under the kilometre to go banner. Coming into the final stretch, Valverde was in fourth wheel, with O'Grady sitting comfortably behind him. As the line neared Valverde jumped across and down the right hand side. He was followed by O'Grady. A look back, a change of pace - an increase of course - and that was it. O'Grady was left behind and Valverde came across the line with enough time to lay right back, lift both arms and celebrate in style. Tomorrow is the 167 km "downhill" run to Zaragoza. Already people are recalling Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano's grand stage victory there a few years back. Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano set the Vuelta fastest stage record here in 2001 which stands at a respectable 55.176 kilometres per hour. The stage is also marked by the first real mountain, the Cat. 3 Puerto de Lanzas Agudas which peaks at the 74 km mark. PhotographyImages by Unipublic
