59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - September 5: León - Burgos, 207 kmPetacchi does it, but not without incidentBy Martin Hardie in Burgos The longest of La Vuelta's 21 days, 207 kilometres which traced in reverse a part of the ancient pilgrim's trail of the Camino de Santiago, saw a familiar face cross the line first - Fassa's Alessandro Petacchi. In the end the threatening rain and storms held off and Petacchi was not challenged by either Zabel, Freire or O'Grady and took the win in Burgos with ease. Although the stage was raced for much of its length at a seemingly leisurely pace, the win itself for Petacchi was not the easiest. He had suffered throughout and in the final he almost found himself stranded with out anyone to keep his face out of the wind as the deceptively long 1.4 km finishing straight chewed up his team mates. Guido Trenti took a long turn to stay with his sprinting captain and remained to pull left with less than 200 metres to go. Petacchi then took the initiative going down the right hand side close to the barriers and was assisted a little bit by Trenti coming back towards him and closing the door on Zabel for a fraction. Petacchi was certainly happy with the win but he noted after the race that he had suffered a lot during the day to get there. He had been involved in a four man pile up that occurred very early on in the stage. He didn't seem to have any visible signs but his teammate Trenti, who crashed later, sported a largish graze clearly visible on his right through his torn knicks. The crash, the wind and then the long straight all took their toll, but in the end Petacchi still had enough to finish a bike and a half clear of Zabel. "Despite the victory, today was a very difficult day for me," said a tired Petacchi at the finish. "First the crashes where I was involved, without consequence, and then my teammates Trenti and Ongarato. Then because I suffered the whole day with the rhythm of the race. In Spain it always starts very hard and I have only three days of racing in my legs. I didn't think I'd succeed in the sprint. After the Giro d'Italia, I crashed at the Tour, then in Holland, and then today, even though I haven't done anything. I was demoralised. "I should say thanks once more to all of my team because they often push me to do the sprints when I don't feel up to it. Clearly they are confident in me. Without taking away anything from the others, I want to underline the work done by Trenti to lead me out. Although he suffered an extensive injury to the right hand side of his body, including his elbow, he did such a strong lead out that I didn't think I'd get past him. I'm extremely happy that he has started again in this manner after the incident before the Giro that compelled him to a long period of rehabilitation." How it unfoldedEchelons served to liven up what was becoming a pretty slow old trot across the plains from Leon to Burgos. Only 31 kilometres were completed in the first hour with the second not being much better. But as the race entered its second half things got a bit exciting, or as Joseba Beloki said "scary". Ahead was version one of the day's break - Serrano of Cafes Baque and Tankink of Quick.Step; version two would see Serrano swap places with AGR2's Julien Laidoun later on. Behind the break as the winds started to come into play, Beloki found himself without teammates and left behind in a second group that formed off the back. A third group formed behind that and Beloki was left to work without teammates to get his group back into play. "It was my fault," he said after the stage, "I got caught out and my team was ahead so it was my job to get myself back into the peloton". He did and in the end finished safe and sound in the main group led in by Petacchi. The most decisive attempt to split the race apart was when Liberty put it into the gutter towards the finish. In the end, Petacchi's 18th win of the year fell into place as a result of this move. On the run into the cathedral city of Burgos, Liberty Seguros tried to rip apart the peloton when Hruska, Gonzalez de Galdeano and others positioned themselves in the left hand gutter and really upped the pace. Fassa reacted quickly and followed through on Liberty's work pulling strongly at the front as a block for a good 6 kilometres into the finish. The combined Liberty-Fassa move which quickly became a Fassa event, split the bunch apart with two or three echelons forming at the rear. The big losers in the wash up of Liberty putting it in the gutter were Leonardo Piepoli and Fabian Jeker of Saunier Duval and J. Antonio Pecharroman of Quick Step. The Saunier's lost themselves 1'52 each by finishing in the third group. Pecharroman lost himself 1'14 as he arrived in the second. Jeker and Piepoli really lost any chance of having a look in on the G.C. when they got dropped in the opening team time trial - they now stand at 5'06 and 7'22 back respectively. They will of course be content to support Beloki and search for the stages. Pecharroman as Quick.Step's leader came in with his team yesterday, but even that time was 2'14 behind Postal - he now stands 3'27 behind the new race leader Max Van Heeswijk. Van Heeswijk took the first meta volante at Moratinos and picked himself up 6 seconds which was enough for him to assume the virtual leadership from his teammate Landis. Van Heeswijk kept to the USPS line after the race. "I hope to win a stage...this year I have had 12 (wins) and hopefully I can make it 13 here," he said. But although yesterday Landis said US Postal wouldn't defend the jersey and Bruyneel emphatically denied they have any interest in the general in Madrid, today's twist added by Max after the race was that, "We will try and keep the jersey in the team...it doesn't matter who." So it seems the jersey will be defended by USPS, at least for now, in order to let them pass it around a little. But one wonders with Landis feeling good, whether all this talk of not being interested in the general is just some talk to relieve the pressure for now. PhotographyImages by Unipublic
