59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 18 - September 23: Béjar - Ávila, 196 kmKelme score anotherMancebo fires up the GC ridersBy Martin Hardie in Avila The everlasting Kelme domestique Javier Pascual Rodriguez managed to hold of Baque's Ivan Parra in the closing metres of La Vuelta as it arrived in Avila this afternoon. Pascual and Parra had ridden together to the line from the top of the final climb of the day, the Cat. 2 Puerto de Navalmoral, and maintained their steady gap over most of the final twenty kilometres. Rodriguez was built like the favourite for the match up, with his heavier build, he seemed the more likely to be able to power over the cobbled climb along the castle walls of Avila. But Parra, younger brother of one of Colombia's most famed, Fabio Parra, stuck with him over the rough and undulating cobbles. The final stretch is one of the most picturesque urban finishes around, cresting the cobbled rise as it turns right around one of the wall's fortified towers and under the one km to go banner, then taking a left hander that leads to another couple of hundred metres of cobbles, before a slight dip and a right hander into a 300 metre uphill finishing straight. Parra remained stuck to the wheel of Rodriguez throughout the cobbled section and they passed over the asphalt to the final turn at a steady pace, one behind the other. As they started the last 300 metres Pascual Rodriguez glanced back a number of times to see where Parra was. Parra tried to come around him but just couldn't find that extra half wheel he needed to get in front. Pascual Rodriguez told Cyclingnews post-stage that, "I was convinced I would win the stage as I know I am much faster in a sprint. I thought that he would have a go from the bottom because if we arrived in the final straight together I would be faster." Pascual confirmed Belda's plan that following the stage to Covatilla, "We would go and try to maintain our position in the teams classification and look for more stage wins, but if we can do more for Valverde we wouldn't lag". Pascual went on to say that, "I have cold blood. I saw Parra hadn't moved when we only had 200 metres left. He knows I am faster - we were teammates before. When we were 100 metres from the line I went and I won. This win, after what happened to us on Covatilla, gives us some cause to give it some more stick on the way to Madrid. For someone like myself, a professional for ten years, a victory like this in Avila in La Vuelta means a lot. It is a good recompense for my work and for the people that have supported me: We are going to continue until Navacerrada. This is still not over and we haven't finished putting on a spectacular." Ivan Parra spoke to Cyclingnews immediately after the finish at the Cafes Baque bus and told us almost apologetically that, "I just couldn't do it...I felt good on the climb and I wanted to go alone to the finish but then Rodriguez caught me, but it just couldn't be today. But you have to keep fighting". Parra had been the strongest of the escapees on the climbs. He attacked twice on the final climb to get rid of his breakaway companions and was only rejoined by Pascual in the latter stages of the climb. In the end Pascual was able to take the stage and fulfil his director's plans of hunting for stage wins for the rest of La Vuelta. Cafes Baque went off in the hunt today with two intentions, protect the lead of Cardenas in the mountains competition and if possible, to secure Baque's second win in two days. They ended up achieving the first objective with Cardenas taking the points on the day's first climb and before the departure of the day's break. Regarding the second, with the grandfather of Colombian cycling, Hernan Buenahora coming in a little further back, the modest outfit managed to take second and fourth place. In fact today was Baque's tenth break of La Vuelta - they surely must be up their as one of the most combative teams, having only missed two escapes over the course of the race's three weeks. How it unfoldedThe non-starters today included 2002 Avila winner Aitor Gonzalez (Fassa Bortolo), Michael Barry (USPS) and Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile). Although Gonzalez claimed he was suffering from the stomach virus, Vinokourov was in good health and said that he had planned to pull out in order to concentrate on the World's. After 31 km, a group of 10 men formed in front. Pascual Rodriguez and Parra were there along with Joan Horrach and José Vicente Garcia Acosta (Illes Balears-Banesto), Hernan Buenahora (Cafes Baque), Rubén Plaza (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme), Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank), Patrick Calcagni (Vini Caldirola), Bram Tankink (Quick.Step-Davitamon) and Juan Fuentes (Saeco). None of the break were particularly threatening on GC, and Liberty allowed them up to seven minutes grace at times. Early on, both David Llorente and Roberto Laiseka tried and failed to get across, then later Cedric Vasseur and Mikel Pradera went. The former almost made it across to the leaders before the final climb, while the latter was called back to help his teammate Mancebo in the finale. Fourth placed overall, Mancebo certainly tried to upset proceedings behind the break. On both the Puerto de Serranillo (Cat. 1), and the Cat. 2 Puerto de Navalmoral, Mancebo tried to leave the grip of the Liberty-controlled peloton. On the latter climb he managed to stay away for a while, but was caught again. However, the damage he caused was significant. Only 11 or so riders survived the attack when they neutralised Mancebo. The next to go was Santi Perez. He jumped and was followed by Heras and Valverde leaving Mancebo, Sastre and co. to chase over the top. They rejoined on the descent, helped by Pradera and Garcia Acosta who had dropped back from in front. Mancebo told Cyclingnews afterwards that, "It is my country here and I had to try. There remain three difficult days and we will continue to fight until the last moment. Tomorrow is another hard mountain stage of climbing and descending and we intend to attack". Mancebo of course is in fourth place separated by 1 second from Valverde, who today felt a lot better. Valverde told us that, "The finish at Avila was very good for me but my teammate has won and that makes me very happy." Tomorrow is day three in this stretch of Sierra as we head towards Madrid. The stage is a relatively short leg breaker of just 142km but it is crowded with four Cat. 3 climbs, one Cat. 2 and one Cat. 1. The biggest climb is the beautiful Alto de Abantos, the scene of many a famous ride including Chava Jimenez's last Vuelta win and the site of last year's destruction of Nozal by Heras. It's 15 km, only averaging 5.5%, but its ramps are evil as they commence in the narrow town streets - early on the ramps peak at 17%. After Abantos the race still needs to cover a roller coaster 60 kilometres over two cat. 3's. The day without a mountain top finish favours the likes of Valverde more than a pure climber like Heras, but in this race who knows. PhotographyImages by Unipublic
