59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live Report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 16 - September 21: Olivenza - Cáceres, 190.1 kmJulia takes final transition stageVuelta overshadowed by Hamilton positiveBy Martin Hardie in Caceres Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme's Jose Julia won the rather nondescript 16th stage when he took advantage of a momentary lull in proceedings to attack his remaining breakaway companions with 3 kilometres to go. Julia had no-one in sight behind him as he crossed the line to take Kelme's third win of the race following those of Valverde and Jimenez. He said afterwards that, "It is always difficult to get into a break on a day like this and then difficult also to win from it. I followed and then when there was a change of pace, I took my opportunity". As he thanked people for his win, the caravan sat back to wait for the other news of the day, the news that broke before the start. No one really seemed interested in the stage as such. A boring stage across plains inhabited by sheep, cows, pigs, fields of wheat and corn and gnarly trees that are reminiscent of the iron woods of outback Australia. Everyone was more interested in the news regarding Tyler Hamilton. A blood test, after the Valencia time trial which Hamilton wanted so much to win in order to wave the stars and stripes on September 11, revealed a positive result for a homologous blood transfusion (blood from another person). It was also reported that another test taken during the Athens Olympics was also positive. As yet, the results of the B sample analyses have not been confirmed. Blood manipulation of any type is banned under UCI rules, and it wasn't until recently that homologous transfusions were able to be detected by normal blood testing. Hamilton has denied the result, and his Phonak team called a press conference on Tuesday evening in Zurich, Switzerland. At the Vuelta his director Alvaro Pino said that Hamilton was "taking things calmly", that "Tyler would talk later in Zurich," but specified that the team's rules meant a rider found positive would be fired. People were doing their utmost not to mix the Hamilton case with any other matter. Cycling thrives on the spectacle of super human efforts, taxing the body and mind to the limits. The endurance of the grand tours are the pinnacle of this. Cycling is of course not just about sport, the race organisers, the television stations, the sponsors, the fans all demand results. The riders want to gain contracts, keep them, renew them and win. It is part and parcel of the contemporary age where the commodities are information and spectacles. So what falls over cycling on days like this is a grand cone of silence lowered in order to stave off any threat to what is most important - not the riders, their health or the purity of the sport; but to stave off any threats to the investments and returns that the make the spectacle go around. Those labelled "drug cheats", alleged or not, are cast into the same barrel of people who are "against the system". Either excuses and explanations will be accepted, or Hamilton will become another one of the so-called rotten apples - the all-American boy will be discarded or sent off to serve penance. For a while, outside of public view. Drugs, medicine and supplements are sold to us everyday. We are effectively told that there exists a drug or medical process for everything. But this wide-yed myth of cyclists being able perform superhuman feats solely with the aid of a sports drink and energy gel is continued. Whatever happens in Hamilton's case, it is just another chapter in the long story that draws attention to the gap between image and reality that is a daily part of contemporary life. At some point something will have to give. How it unfoldedLa Vuelta passed through Extremadura today, a province of Spain to the north of Andalucia and bordering Portugal. From here the rivers flow west the Atlantic, unlike those of most of the past two weeks that flowed to the Mediterranean. Extremadura - the name comes from the tough extremes of climate that visit the region. Extremely cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. Here we are in autumn the first stage of La Vuelta's last week, if the UCI get its way and cuts down the length of the race to 18 days as it has proposed, this might be the last third week of the race. It was hot in Extremadura today. Well over 30 degrees and hitting 40 for most of it. The peloton took the opportunity to amble along without much of a care in the world, chatting among themselves, maybe looking forward to a day without any nasty events before the four coming stages in the mountains. Attacks were on from the start.Maybe it was one of those days when some riders sit in the bunch, thinking 'just go away will you', just waiting for one of them to get away so they can get back to not wasting energy and simply resting. Shortly before the 40 km mark, a break of 13 riders got clear: Spezialetti, Di Luca (Saeco), Txente Garcia Costa, Lastras (Illes Balears), Valjavec (Phonak), Isasi (Euskaltel), Moreni (Alessio), Parra (Cafes Baque), Boven (Rabobank), Cruz (USPS), Fernandez (Paternina), Putsep (Ag2r) and Jose Julia (Com. Valenciana-Kelme). The break also contained Jose Enrique Gutierrez for a while, before the Phonak rider went back to the peloton after 66 km. The gap steadily increased to peak at over 17'30. With 50 kilometres to go, Saunier Duval decided to organise the front of the peloton. They didn't chase, but did enough to bring the time down. The gap came down to about 12'30 when the peloton passed 20 km to go, but the break was long gone by then. With 12 km to go, the 13 man break decided finally to get animated over the little rises on the road into Caceres. Txente was the first to try, then Lastras, a bit of this, then a bit of chasing. David Fernandez wasn't up to it at all and was the first to go backwards. The group split in half with 10 km to go into two lots of six men each. The front one had Cruz, Valjavec, Isasi, Di Luca, Julia and Lastras. Behind them, Parra and Moreni tried to bridge up, but without luck. The front group quickly got themselves 20, then 30 seconds. The final kilometres had their fair share of turns and roundabouts. Holes appeared, disappeared and reappeared amongst the six. Lastras went on a rise up to the main shopping district, chased by Di Luca who followed with the others behind. There was a concertina moment when the attacker was reeled in, and the free wheeling occurred. It was only a moment, a fraction, with 3 kms to go, and Jose Julia went down the left. No-one reacted. He gained 12 seconds in a kilometre and with one kilometre to go he had 14 seconds. The other five realised they were not in it any more, but tried to look like they wanted to chase. It was one of those "transition days" today. They happen, and we all sit back and wait for the next - it continues like that. Tomorrow's stage will finish on the Covatilla ski station (1960m), high above Bejar, the town of Roberto Heras. Before we get there and its special category ascent of 18 kms, the race faces two Cat. 1's and a Cat. 3. The Cat. 1's Piornal and Honduras are both long with heavy, regular grades - the Puerto de Honduras, the second of the two averages 8% over its 17 kilometres. Let's hope Heras, Valverde and co resume battle and perhaps somewhere else, someone will decide that it's time to be realistic and lift the cone of silence. PhotographyImages by Unipublic
