59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live Report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 14 - September 18: Málaga - Granada, 167 kmPerez overcomes personal tragedy to winGC remains tightBy Martin Hardie in Granada 27 year old Asturian Santi Perez (Phonak) achieved his second professional victory today. Both of them have been in Grand Tours, but this was the first in which he actually crossed the line ahead of any one else. Two years ago in the Giro d'Italia, Perez was awarded the victory in the fifth stage to Limone Piemonte. He got the win the day after it was held. The reason was the disqualification of the man who finished in front of him, Stefano Garzelli. Today in Granada, Perez found himself again a winner, but on the day the race was held. It was a victory that came to him after what has been close to two years of personal agony. "Of course today was a very special day for me, it has been nearly two years since my girlfriend died [in a traffic accident] and it has been pretty hard to recover from that - this victory is for her and her family," Santi told Cyclingnews after the finish of today's stage in downtown Granada. Five kilometres from the summit of the Alto de Monachil, Perez attacked the group of leaders which had been selected after CSC's Carlos Sastre drove the bunch through the debris of the day's break. Perez, who launched himself up the steep ramps, quickly managed to get himself a comfortable gap and continued to increase it all the way to the top. His gap stood at 33 seconds to Valverde and Heras as he passed the summit and ended up crossing the finish line 46 seconds ahead of the Valverde-led group. "Being able to climb with people like Roberto Heras, Paco Mancebo and Alejandro Valverde, all great climbers, the other day in Calar Alto, just to find myself with them the other day was for me a great boost; it was very good and gave me the confidence to try what I did today," Perez told Cyclingnews after the stage. "Today I was always thinking that there would be a bit of a battle, but also people would try and save some energy for tomorrow. Anyway as my morale was improved, I thought about making the move after Carlos Sastre had caused the selection to form . So I attacked where I did to try and take as much profit out of the climb before the top. I thought that it would be easier to stay away and get to the finish alone." That is exactly what Santi did. On the descent he tucked himself low, almost sitting on his top tube. He explained, "I managed to maintain the same gap that I had made on the climb and I believed that it would be enough to get me across the flat kilometres at the bottom...I saw that I had enough time and thank god I ended up taking the stage." Perez finished second to Heras on the fog bound Calar Alto two days ago and he opened a few eyes with his effort. Today's win has seem him leap frog Landis and Beltran to move him into 6th place on the GC. Cyclingnews asked him if he though he could improve on that position and even think about the podium. "I think that my major achievement at La Vuelta would be to obtain a stage win," he said. "Now I have done that I suppose it is possible to look for another one...nothing has changed with my form, only my morale has improved. I have now found the morale to now start looking for wins, but regarding the general I think I am a little way back to start thinking about that just now. It will be difficult for me to try and overtake Mancebo and Valverde." How it unfoldedThe day had started out fast and furious with a number of breaks forming, separating and coming back together. The main protagonists were Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile), Eladio Jimenez and David Latasa (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme), Constantino Zaballa (Saunier Duval), Jorge Ferrio (Paternina), Felix Cardenas and Ivan Parra (Cafes Baque), José Miguel Elias (Relax-Bergasol), José Enrique Gutierrez (Phonak), Roberto Laiseka (Euskaltel), Benoît Joachim (USPS) and Toni Colom (Illes Balears). The group numbered 12 as it passed the los Bermejales dam at the foot of the day's second climb of the same name. Phonak's strapping Gallego, Jose Enrique Gutierrez put in a strong attack and was later caught by Saunier's Tino Zaballa. The pair stayed away for some time across the flatter rolling section populated by more vegetation than we have seen of late, still sparse but with some trees, pines and rows and rows of olives. The 10 chasers eventually caught the pair but behind things were hotting up as Liberty pulled hard with Vini Caldirola to try and neutralise the lot of them. On the first ramps of the final climb of Alto de Monachil, Vinokourov attacked his now regrouped breakaway companions. As all struggled to deal with the dog that appeared in Vino's wake, Sastre started putting the hurt on the bunch. Vino's ex-colleagues were all swept up and when Nozal took over from Sastre to place things once again under the control of himself, Serrano and Heras, Vino's gap plummeted. Behind, in the heat of the Alto's moonscape, the casualties were mounting. A few km into the climb, Santi Perez made his move. But still in his wake Nozal and Serrano kept the pace high to protect their leader, Heras. Sastre was obviously uncomfortable with the increasing gap of Santi Perez and also did his turns pulling up the ramps. Valverde was always attentive, a shadow haunting Heras and co. the whole time. He stayed there until quite near the top, when he suddenly let it all go and made another attempt to upset the calm of Heras. In an instant Heras was glued to his wheel. The pair crossed the top with a small gap over the others. Valverde wasn't going to give in. He tried again, this time with gravity to his advantage and taking no prisoners, hoping to scare Heras off his wheel. The gap increased for a while through tight, technical corners. As the gap increased, so did the fear factor. The descent was tight now through pines, rather than the Beyond Thunderdome landscape of the other side. You had to hold your breath at times to take it in and lean whilst watching to try and not fall yourself from your position. It was a test of nerve and as the gap increased into one hairpin, Valverde went wide on a more regular sort of line, whilst Heras cut straight through the steep apex throwing all to the wind. Heras got back to him, reglued himself to Valverde's wheel and this one was over, at least until the next one. Valverde spoke to us, chatty as usual, while hanging around the finish line. "I went to the limit today," he said, referring to both his attack going up and the scary descent down the other side. "I saw him behind going down, it was crazy," he added regarding the way Heras pulled out all stops to get back to him. "I don't know what I can try tomorrow." Valverde's teammate, Carlos Garcia Quesada, buried himself with work. Each time he was needed, on the climb itself, on the descent after Valverde and Heras had been captured, and then across the flat driving the group to the end, he was unstoppable. His work was strong, tireless and faithful. Although Kelme may be the team that the Pro Tour and so many sponsors have forgotten, they themselves have not forgotten how to fight. They don't have the euro power of Liberty but they have a grit, determination and flair that promises to keep this race alive till the end. Between Valverde and Heras of course is Mancebo, who told Cyclingnews after the stage that the Alto de Monachil was " a very hard climb, especially at the pace we were going...it was hard going up and it was hard going down". Tomorrow, the Monachil has been thrown in for good measure again just to make the nearly 30 kilometres of mountain time trialling even more gruelling. It is then followed immediately by the epic Sierra Nevada. Mancebo mentioned them when he said, "I am tired but I hope to have a good day tomorrow and try and minimise the differences a bit. If I can find a good rhythm I can do well, today and tomorrow are both key stages. We will have to see how it is tomorrow, whether it's hot again, but I hope to be up the top. I have to keep fighting for it, but have you saw today Heras doesn't fail, the Vuelta is his race...so let's see tomorrow." PhotographyImages by Lavuelta.com
