Powerful Postal delivers Landis the leader's jersey
T-Mobile and Illes Balears the next best teams

A genial Floyd Landis was granted the leader's jersey in the opening stage of La Vuelta when, with daylight second, team director Johan Bruyneel anointed the smiling Californian to cross the line first. Coming into the final straight, US Postal Service was clearly not going to be challenged in today's opening team time trial in León. A sprinting Erik Zabel led in T-Mobile but even their strong coordinated effort could only bring them within half a minute or so of the Posties.
It was a true Posties' Podium Party with the entire USPS team making two appearances - as stage winners and as leaders of the team classification; whilst Floyd soaked up the limelight with the top of the points, mountains, combination and leaders classifications all bearing his name.
After the stage Landis said that his leadership "wasn't in the plan" but there was of course a plan as to how they would ride the team TT. "The best tactic in a team time trial is to use every rider - the strongest riders pull the longest, and if you can't pull at least you roll through and give at least another second's rest to the others - it's a team time trial," he said, emphasising the team effort. When director Bruyneel told Landis to cross the line in first place, with what already would surely be the winning time and guaranteed win (the Posties set off fourth last in the starting order) Landis simply said: "I wasn't complaining".

Bruyneel has said that USPS is here for the stages and not looking for the GC. In fact many teams seem to be playing down their expectations of the race. "There is always a chance of the overall," said Landis. "But we have come to this race without pressure and we will see how it goes".
No pressure seems to be a pretty common feeling at today's Vuelta kick off. Tyler Hamilton says its a field experiment and Stuart O'Grady says he will take it day by day and see how it pans out - "Maybe I will have a go in the sprints later in the race," O'Grady told Cyclingnews before the start, but like others he seems to have come without expectations.
Maybe playing down your chances is the way to go, as Landis explained, "It's unwise to single yourself out as the guy others have to beat - if you don't single yourself out it relieves the pressure." Of those who have got a little pressure on themselves, Liberty Seguros finished 1'28 down on USPS. Not what they would have expected for today. Even worse was the showing of Saunier Duval at 1'50. Of the other main Spanish contenders, the Valverde-led Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme look good at 58 seconds back, with Illes Baleares at 56 seconds.

After today's commencement of battle, four or five teams have probably put themselves in decent defendable positions: USPS of course, T-Mobile 31 seconds back, then a group at more or less the minute mark - Illes Baleares, Kelme and Phonak. After that, the gaps increase to a group of teams that maybe we could have expected more of: CSC, Liberty and Fassa. In any event USPS doesn't seem intent on defending the jersey, possibly content to let it be passed around until the business end of La Vuelta really starts. Thus the marked differences created today over a relatively short distance, might in the immediate future, create some room for a few attacking moves during the course of the next few days.
There are a lot of people who have already lost out today and they will have to keep alert in the winds of the flatter stages as the race heads east to the Mediterranean and crosses the northern plains of Spain, if they want to improve their lot before the mountains and first individual time trial. The coming days are made for lapses of concentration that might cause a split and a big irrecoverable gap.
Tomorrow the forecast is for head/cross winds from the right with gusts and possible stormy patches towards the end. Watch out for the echelons!
