91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 12 - July 16: Castelsarrasin - La Mongie, 197.5 kmFinalmente! Basso confirms, Armstrong gainsUllrich and Hamilton crack, Voeckler maintainsBy Tim Maloney, European editor in La Mongie 26 year old Ivan Basso took his sixth and by far the most important victory of his career today at La Mongie on Stage 12 of the 2004 Tour de France. A former junior and U23 World Champion, Basso has always shown much promise but it wasn't until he was the Best Young Rider at the Tour de France in 2002 (finishing 11th) that the classy Italian rider showed that he might possibly be a Tour de France rider. Last year, the consistent Basso was sixth but he wasn't happy about the lack of support on Fassa Bortolo, so he took the risk and made the move to the smaller, more focused CSC squad of Bjarne Riis. It was a gamble that paid off, as Basso went pull for pull with his friend Lance Armstrong on La Mongie and in the last 100 meters, pulled past for his first ever Tour de France stage victory. After his win, Basso said that, "It was a fantastic day today for me. I'm really happy...it was a very important win for me today. It was a good start for me, but it's still the beginning of the Tour and there it's still really hard and really long. Armstrong is still very strong and so we'll have to see what happens. I have good form right now and I'm hoping to keep it." Lance Armstrong is not a big fan of the ascent up to La Mongie; he revealed today his bad vibes with the east side of the Col du Tourmalet. "I don't have a great relationship with this mountain," Armstrong explained after Stage 12. "I don't know why, but I always suffer on this climb. Two years ago, Beloki and Heras were killing me here. Nobody knew it, but I was always asking Roberto to slow down that day. I've always had to give it everything on this climb and today was just the same." Despite that, Armstrong is now in second on GC and looks poised to take over the maillot jaune tomorrow in Plateau de Beille. But Lance does have a great relationship with the talented 26 year Italian from Varese. Last year, Armstrong tried to bring Basso to USPS but Ivan had other goals and chose CSC instead. On Tuesday's rest day in Limoges, Armstrong and Basso met to discuss Ivan's mother, who is currently battling cancer in Italy. Armstrong paid homage to Basso today. "Ivan deserved to win the stage today...he's a hell of a good guy and he was super-strong today. We have been friends for a long time...we're working on helping to treat his mom's cancer." Armstrong further explained the progress of Stage 12, saying, "It was a strange day with the weather; first it was nice, then it was rainy and then sunny at the finish. But today, everything for the classement went superbly for me." Superb indeed, as Armstrong took back considerable time on maillot jaune Voeckler (4'11) as well as further distancing his main rivals like Jan Ullrich (2'30) and Tyler Hamilton (3'27). "For me, the biggest surprise was that Ullrich and Hamilton lost time...I didn't expect that. But Ullrich is never good on the first mountain stage so let's see how he is tomorrow," said Armstrong. Ullrich agreed with Armstrong's post-stage 12 analysis. "I had a bad day today, so I'll have to cope with that, explained a mildly disappointed T-Mobile man in La Mongie. "It was sunny at the start, but then the rain came and it's not good for me. I have large thigh muscles and they tighten up in the rain. Already on the Col d'Aspin, I wasn't feeling that good and I knew then that I would have to fight all the way to the finish to keep the gap close." But Ullrich is a very experienced Tour rider and as a former Tour winner, he knows that the Tour isn't over for him after today. "But today is not a big defeat for me; I can still take back time on other mountain stages and in the time trials", said Ullrich. "Now Klöden is our joker...I've always said I would ride for the best man on our team, so that's an option if it's not my Tour." After his Stage 6 crash in Angers where he smashed his back badly, Tyler Hamilton has been in a world of pain at the Tour, a world he knows all too well in France. Today, the man from Marblehead hung tough as always on the Col d'Aspin, but as the pace accelerated as the Tourmalet began, he had to drop off the pace. "I have no excuse," the always stoic New Englander explained. "I had no legs today. Since my crash, I've had a lot of pain in my back and climbing just makes it worse. I'm disappointed I let my team down today; it's not a surprise but I tried to be optimistic. I gave it 100% today." After today, Hamilton is now 20th on GC, 9'46" behind maillot jaune Voeckler and over four minutes behind Armstrong. Bonne courage for Voeckler today, but the 25 year old Frenchman was 41st, 3'59 behind Basso at La Mongie. The Brioches boy explained that, "The stage was very hard today with the rain on the last two climbs. So I just rode as best as I could to defend my maillot jaune. In six kilometres of climbing, Armstrong took back half of the advantage he had on me! So I'll try my best again tomorrow." Thousands of Iban Mayo's orange-clad fellow Basques were drenched by a cold downpour several hours before their Euskaltel-Euskadi heroes arrived, the changeable weather also put a damper on Mayo's performance today. 9th on the stage 1'03" behind Basso, Mayo seemed perplexed by his lack of punch today. "It was a strange day today; first the heat and then the rain and cold. That wasn't normal...I wasn't good but I wasn't bad; the same thing happened to Ullrich and Hamilton. As always, Armstrong was strong and in front. But I think that Ullrich will go better in the coming mountains." Another orange clad rider, American Levi Leipheimer finished 16th today in the wet, cold conditions. "Today didn't go exactly the way I wanted it to," said a disappointed Leipheimer at La Mongie, and although he lost time on some riders, the Santa Rosa rider moved up on GC to 12th. Basso seconded Mayo's take on the climate on Stage 12, saying "With the rain and then the sun, that might have given some riders problems today...so they didn't have good legs. But I think that Lance is the strongest rider at the Tour. My team did a great job the first 10 days protecting me so today it was normal that I should be ready for the challenge." Basso's CSC teammate Carlos Sastre was instrumental in the Italian's win today, and the likeable rider from Avila explained, "Today I tried to win, and I saw that Ivan was strong also so I knew he would be there. We had to ride our race, we did that, and the most important thing is that Team CSC is in front of the rest. I didn't feel super, but I felt like I had to try something today. I can go at my speed for a long time, so I went as long as I could. That was good for Ivan because he could just stay on Armstrong's wheel and that's how we could win the stage." Basso has moved from 20th to 6th today and if he maintains his consistent form is certainly a candidate for the 2004 Tour de France podium. He credits his move to CSC for his great leap forward, when he said "Bjarne Riis is a fantastic director...he doesn't put any pressure on me and just keeps me focused. All he's wanted me to do this year is focus on the Tour. We did a training camp in the Alps and then I spent a week at his house in Tuscany for some fantastic training. So I was ready for the Tour." Today at La Mongie, Basso confirmed it. How it unfoldedDirectly after the start, a break of four riders extricated themselves from the peloton and Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo), Finot (R.A.G.T.), Ljungqvist (Alessio) and Wim Vansevenant (Lotto-Domo) had 4'00 at the feed zone near Peguilhan, but behind the pace was creeping up gradually as the chasing peloton saw the misty blue outline of the mountains looming on the horizon. The average speed across the flat plains was over 42km/h for the first three hours while US Postal rode tempo on the front. Up the mountain in La Mongie, a torrential thunderstorm soaked the hundreds of thousands of spectators clustered on the ascent awaiting the battle to come. As the break approached Lortet with a lead of 2'00, the skies opened up with a cold downpour and by the sprint in Sarrancolin, the gap had fallen to 1'15. Maillot jaune Voeckler had a bike change but quickly came back to the peloton with the help of three teammates. In the chasing peloton, T-Mobile, Rabobank and Quick.Step rode hard tempo to soften up the legs of the Spanish climbers in the tough conditions. As the ascent of the Col d'Aspin began, US Postal took control of the tempo and quickly split the peloton in two, with Benjamin Noval setting the pace. Domina Vacanze's Pippo Simeoni took a flyer with 10km remaining to the summit of Aspin. Behind him, Moreau (Credit Agricole) attacked and went right by Simeoni, who was reabsorbed. Moreau got a gap was but brought back by Virenque. Rasmussen (Rabobank) and Martinez (Euskaltel) countered and rode past Simeoni onto the front of the race. George Hincapie was powering away on the front of the 40-strong peloton, with Ullrich and his teammate Klöden marking them just behind. Martinez was reabsorbed but Rasmussen continued his move as the man they call "Chicken" flew the coop up the Aspin. At the summit of the Col d'Aspin with 25km to go, the relentless pursuit of the Blue Train pulled back most of Rasmussen's advantage. Chicken flew over the top just ahead of Moreau, with Virenque third. On the slick descent to Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, the front riders descended alone, tried to put distance between each other and the Armstrong/Ullrich group. At the base of the Tourmalet, Euskaltel moved to the front to put pressure on Postal and got a small split, but George Hincapie flexed his muscles and upped the tempo as the first slopes of the Tourmalet began. Within a few kilometres, the pace had reduced the front group 35 riders. Lance then sent Rubiera and Azevedo to the front to up the pace and riders began to peel off the back as Rasmussen was caught with 7km to go. Hamilton then dropped off the pace, followed by Jan Ullrich with 5km to go. CSC's Carlos Sastre attacked and got a 0'20 gap, but Illes Balears Paco Mancebo went after him with 4km to go. Basso followed the move and Armstrong followed and suddenly these two riders had gotten up to Sastre and ridden right by him. Armstrong and Basso went shoulder to shoulder until the last meters when the Italian pulled ahead of the American for the win. Stage 13 - July 17: Lannemezan-Plateau de Beille, 205.5kmAs summer thunderstorms sweep the central Pyrenees Saturday, this long and difficult stage will takes on another dimension that could change the outcome of the 2004 Tour de France. With seven categorized climbs on the menu, including the final brutal ascent of Plateau de Beille, this stage will not be for the faint hearted and will give a good indication of the final podium in the 2004 Tour de France.
