Stage for Degano, Ardila wins overall

Up and coming Colombian rider Mauricio Ardila today successfully retained his race lead in the Tour of Britain, ending the five day 2.3 ranked race a comfortable 12 seconds clear of Credit Agricole's Julian Dean. The Chocolade Jacques rider finished safely in the main bunch at the end of a flat-out criterium on the streets of London, an exciting 72 kilometre race run off in front of massive crowds.
The day's honours went to Barloworld sprinter Enrico Degano, who thundered in ahead of Dean, Kirk O'Bee (Navigators Insurance) and Belgian hope Tom Boonen (Quick.Step-Davitamon). Jeremy Hunt (MrBookmaker.com) was best of the Brits in fifth while Navigators Insurance rider Ciarán Power earned the Irish plaudits by finishing sixth.
The day was marked by a determined breakaway featuring triple Olympic medallist Bradley Wiggins (Credit Agricole), Great Britain's Kieran Page, David McCann (Grant Thornton Team Ireland) and Nico Mattan (Relax Bodysol). These opened a lead of over thirty seconds but, despite huge vocal encouragement from a crowd willing Wiggins to victory, the break was overhauled in the closing stages. That set things up for the bunch finish and Degano's win, with a delighted Ardila coasting over the line in 20th place to take the biggest win yet of his career.
Julian Dean finished second on the stage to make sure of his win in the points classification, a comfortable sixteen points clear of Boonen. Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com) lifted the mountains prize while Barloworld's Rodney Green nabbed the sprints award. MrBookmaker beat Credit Agricole to the team prize.
How it unfolded
Blue skies and huge crowds greeted the riders at the start of today's concluding stage, a 45 lap, 72.4 kilometre criterium race around Westminster.
Early on in the 90-odd minute stage Great Britain's Charly Wegelius went clear with Ryan Cox (Barloworld) and Irish road race champion David O'Loughlin (Grant Thornton Team Ireland). O'Loughlin was dropped soon afterwards but the other two pressed onwards, Wegelius nabbing the first bonus sprint on lap 15.
Wales rider Yanto Barker then jumped across the gap with fellow UK rider Russel Downing (Great Britain) trying to follow. However the breakaway was brought to an end soon afterwards when the peloton reeled in all the front riders. A dangerous four-man move then slipped away with British triple Olympic medallist Bradley Wiggins, Relax-Bodysol's Nico Mattan, Ireland's David McCann and Kieran Page (Great Britain) joining forces. Wiggins had said from the start of the race that this would be his best chance of success and was sure to give his all in building a good lead; together with the other riders he eked out an advantage of over 30 seconds by the seconds sprint on lap 35, where Mattan led McCann over the line.
Several riders tried to get across to the leading quartet, including a move by O'Loughlin, Downing and US Postal's Michael Creed but no-one, the bunch included, seemed to be able to close the gap.
Towards the latter third of the race other teams started to take over from Ardila's Chocolade Jacques-team at the head of the bunch. Quick.Step Davitamon was one of those most prominent - hardly surprising, giving Tom Boonen's finishing speed - but so too Barloworld. The pursuit had a steady eroding effect on the advantage of the leading four, the gap dropping dramatically as the final laps ticked down.
Wiggins made a huge effort to go clear with two laps remaining, surging out of the break as the crowd went ballistic in their support. Mattan was the only rider able to get across but despite their eyeballs-out drive to the line, both were overhauled just before taking the bell. That set things up perfectly for the big bunch sprint and Degano's fine win, with Dean and O'Bee finishing about a length back in second and third.
Race winner Mauricio Ardila coasted to a halt and embraced some Colombian supporters by the barriers. "I am very, very happy to take this," he said shortly afterwards. "It is my biggest win for sure. I have taken a few stages in races before but never the overall classification. I am really delighted."
"I would like to thank my teammates who did a lot of work for me today, and also all the Colombians in the crowd."
Ardila is still not certain in which colours he will be riding next season. "I am not sure what is happening yet. At this time of the year it is always difficult to find a team but after this victory it should be easier. I hope to get a place on a Pro Tour team.
"My team was very good today. It was a short race, I wanted to stay near the front to stay out of trouble as you never know what can happen in a race like this. The team did a lot of work, I felt pretty comfortable and to be honest there were no problems today.
"I had a very good time here with some good racing and big crowds. I hope to come back next season and defend my title," he concluded with a smile.
