Old and new bikes at TT training session

The bikes that were rolled out for the final day of time trial practice in Athens yesterday were a mix of old and new, depending, it seems, on just how serious the teams were taking their riders' chances in today's time trial.

Colombia's Santiago Botero will be on his usual Giant TT bike for the Olympic time trial. It'll be interesting to see how the enigmatic rider from Medellin goes in Athens - he'll be looking to finally break the curse of the rainbow that seems to have plagued him since his 2002 world time trial championship.

German champion Michael Rich rolled out the Wilier-branded bike that carried him to his national jersey back in June.

Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel has long been a big fan of Australia's BT track bikes which she rode to considerable success in the 2000 Olympics. For the Athens Games, she's aboard BT's new road machine, and after her disastrous crash in the road race, will be looking to the TT to salvage something from the Athens road experience. If she does, there's a bunch of guys in Melbourne who'll be very pleased indeed.

As a member of Lance Armstrong's US Postal team, Victor Hugo Pena (Colombia) gets one of the Trek OCLV carbon fiber time trial frames that are standard equipment for Postal. Pena's bike features a full Dura-Ace component group and Deda handlebar, though we wonder if he'll turn out on something more aero than Mavic Classics wheels for race day!
